AIBU To think most women would think I'm weird

Inspired by a confessions thread I saw on MN earlier. I shower and wash my hair regularly but I've never shaved my legs higher than under my knees, I don't shave my armpits and only have a trim from time to time downstairs and I've never had a single hair on my eyebrows touched with tweezers or anything else.

Am I really strange or can anyone else say the same. I was with my first husband for 11 years until he died and I've been with my 2nd husband for 8 years now and had a few boyfriends over the years and never had any complaints (to my face at least) But I've always wondered if other women shave and tweek a lot more than me.

Shave full legs regularly, armpits every day because 🤢 at long arm pit hair (personal choice and all that) everything off in the pubic hair regularly too, but less so than legs

felulageller · 29/07/2022 09:30

Not doing armpits I'd assume you were french?

All the rest is normal.

It's the hair free ones who seem 'weird' to me/ my friends.

xogossipgirlxo · 29/07/2022 09:38

I don't think it's weird. Why would you assume that? It's not like shaving completely is the only proper way.

pancake123 · 29/07/2022 09:40

It depends how hairy you are - I’ve never had to shave my armpits because I’ve never had a single hair there!
Legs - below the knee, spring/summer only once every 3/4 weeks
Eyebrows - occasional stray hair - never done professionally
Bikini - pre-holiday only.
I’m fair haired - I imagine dark hair shows up more, & does the hair grow back quicker the more you shave, so you end up in a vicious circle of shaving & growth?!

This doesn't strike me as weird at all. I don't think it's that unusual, either. A lot of women don't shave their legs above the knee, and while I think most women do shave their armpits at some point, I know loads who literally only do it on the rare occasions that they're going to be wearing something sleeveless. I also know plenty of women who never do anything to their eyebrows, either because they're happy with their natural brows or they don't really have much in the way of brows to start with.

I shave my armpits and legs, but although my lower legs are very hairy I don't really have enough hair on my thighs worth bothering about. In winter I do it a lot less frequently than in summer. I shape my own eyebrows. Minge is left au naturel unless I'm going to be in swimwear, which is only about once every five years or something.

I'm the opposite, I don't shave at all but I have everything waxed regularly. I hate the way hair looks and feels, really I should hold off on the waxing for a while and put the money towards laser hair removal for a more permanent solution.

RockinHorseShit · 29/07/2022 10:35

Nah, not weird at all. We're all different, it would be a boring old world if we weren't

I've never shaved above the knee, never needed to touch my eyebrows either bar a bit of dye these days & only really shave my pits if I'm going to be flashing them or it's overly hot as they're not particularly hairy & anything else only gets trimmed if I'm swimming

Thank you to the majority of mumsnetters who left lovely comments and got into the spirit of satisfying my vague curiosity. To those people who were less than kind....
No I've not got a fetish about body hair.
I don't think I'm special or unique and I'm certainly not judging anyone who shaves more than me.

I'm just a mum whose mind was wondering while she had a bath, and I wondered if I shave less than most people 😅

I read mumsnet every day and really enjoy doing so but I've been reminded why I don't post very often, as some of the comments were unkind and hurtful. I didn't realise that my mild curiosity about beauty habits were going to rub people up the wrong way, think I'll stay as a read only mumsnetter from now on 🙄

Maybe weird isn't the right word, I just mean I've always wondered if my lack of shaving and never having my eyebrows done was uncommon amongst women in the western world.

That is actually very weird that you would even think of this. You do realise that women will shave /not shave for many various reasons. Who says what's weird or not?

RoseslnTheHospital · 30/07/2022 14:59

People seem to be completely ignoring the socialisation that occurs all around them in the UK, regarding what women look like and what's expected of them. You don't see leg hair or armpit hair regularly in media depictions of women. You also tend to see women with shaped brows (of whatever the current trend is) and with not a hint of hair anywhere near their bikini line should that be visible.

BetsyBigNose · 30/07/2022 15:15

I shave my legs nearly every day in the summer, since they're on show as I tend to wear dresses, but I appear to be in a tiny minority in that I shave all the way up to mid-thigh and have done since I was 13. I don't have particularly hairy legs, but I just prefer them to feel smooth if I'm going to the effort of tanning (sun rather than fake) and moisturising them! In the winter I might go a couple of weeks at a time, but I have health conditions which see me hospitalised fairly regularly, so I try to keep on top of it just in case I'm taken in unexpectedly.

I used to shave my underarms every day, but oddly since being very poorly around 2.5 years ago, my underarm hair appears to have almost stopped growing completely. These days I only get a tiny amount of very fair fine hairs, which aren't visible unless someone has their nose in my armpit (not a regular occurrence...)!
