I come from a socialist family, we had striking miner's kids living with us for respite during the strikes. However, the railway unions are taking the pee aren't they? Transport workers aren't the only people taking a hit right now. What about the 100's of thousands of hospitality, leisure, carer and charity workers in bars, cafe's, restaurants, theme parks, swimming pools, hotels, campsites, working in supporting all our children and elderly relatives etc that are getting between tiny and zero wage increases yet have no option but to carry on and make ends meet. Why can't railway workers see the problems they are going to cause and why can't they see that they are IN THE SAME BOAT AS EVERYONE ELSE (except the wealthy obvs).

YABU - striking railway workers are more deserving of pay increases than the rest of us

YANBU - we need to pull together and see every member of society through this and not cause each other harm

And the public sector, who don’t work for profit-making companies? Perhaps they will go on strike for pay rises to match this private sector bonanza. To be paid for by increased taxes. Which companies will be paying less of, having given away 25% of their taxable profits. Or maybe staff will just leave the public sector. Not a great outcome either way, is it?

The more the private sector earns, the more tax is generated for the public sector...thus more money for pay increases. Where do you think the money for the public sector jobs comes from?

I think the Rail Workers are unrealistic . They are losing public sympathy ATM. Many other workers have a grievance but dont go on strike. Right in the middle of School Holidays ,the start of The commonwealth games as well .Its set for maximum disruption to ordinary families and commuters.

I agree.

And eople will come to realise that Brexit Mick and the RMT campaigned to ruin our economy (~150bn direct/indirect Brexit downside so far) and now they're reaping what they sowed - highest inflation of all developed countries.

Sympathy will soon wane.

I think it’s funny that you are attempting to lecture me about tax when it’s clear that I’m one of the few people on the thread who understands it.

In 1985, the average wage was £3.87. In 2022, it’s £12.42 - that’s an increase of 220.93%.
in 1985, the average house price was £34,378. In 2022, it’s £281,000 - that’s an increase of 717.38%.
Between the wage increase% and the property price increase%, during that timescale, most things have gone up in proportion median to those increases - and new costs for things that didn’t exist then, but are now essential, have also to be factored in.
If you can’t see that the RMT are trying to address the imbalance then there’s really no hope for you. As PP have said, those on lower wages also need to strike! (Or at least show support for them…)

This isn’t just about the RMT union against the rail companies-this is a movement against corporate Britain. The working class have been carrying the van for cuts and lower standards of living for decades whilst greedy businessmen are dreaming the profits.
Watch Mick Lynch and Eddie Dempse-they both talk sense.
Just because other industries aren’t strong it doesn’t mean the RMT are wrong. Maybe the problem is other workplaces don’t have strong unions like the railways, but that isn’t the fault of then RMT.
As for people saying nurses aren’t getting a big pay rise- nots not relevant to the RMT, they have no power over that.

I bet most people on hear didn’t realise that their tax money, amongst other things goes to wards rail companies. Even if you don’t use trains, you’re still paying the big bosses.
They, amongst other big corporations have bosses on £500 k salaries, whilst taking the same amount in dividends and bonuses.

Its actually criminal what we allow to happen.

Edit- carrying the can, not van.
