CF Tourists - is it worse ??

We have just got back from a few days in Cornwall - we live in Devon, so spend a lot of time in both counties and are very used to tourists and holiday makers. We stayed in a 'pub with rooms on the beach, which was lovely. However - I am utterly gobsmacked by the level of CF we have witnessed in the 3 days. It feels like peoples entitlement is off the scale. I don't know how those in hospitality are dealing with it.

Wednesday - Woman went mental at the poor young lad serving in the beer garden - insisted she had booked a table outside. Very politely told her that they do not take reservations for the garden, just the restaurant. Screaming ' Are you calling me a liar'. He went in, and didn't come back out.

Friday AM - they serve breakfast for guests 8am-9.30am, then open for breakfast at 9.30am (lots of signs saying open at 9.30am). At 8.30am a group were outside - rattling the door. Member of staff opens the door, and lets them know they open at 9.30am. Lots of moaning - insisting they can have breakfast now etc. She says no - very polite. So he tells her it is disgusting that they allow guests to sit in the window eating when others can't ! ( and to make up for their error, they should serve them breakfast too)

Friday evening - Family of 6 rocked up - no space in the beer garden. Started shouting - so the owner came out. Man very angry - they had driven for 6 hours - and the kids needed feeding. The owner was great - polite but firm. The man actually suggested the owner walk around the beer garden and checked when people were leaving so they could secure a table. He said no. A lot of swearing. Asked to leave.

Drive home Saturday morning. Along a winding road along the coast - car in front just stops. Man gets out and stands looking at the sea. Single lane - so I cant go around him. After a few moments I beep - he stomps over to my car and says 'Can I help you' ... I say you have blocked the road - could you move please. To which he responds 'I am looking at the view - maybe you could just be kind' FFS !!!

I just wonder what has happened to British manners? I cringe constantly at people's behaviour. This demand for service, attention, right to do what they like, where and when they like. The utter disrespect for other people and other people's possessions/properties is mind blowing. My mother would have kicked my arse if I had dared not even say please or thank you never mind what some folk get up to these days. Human behaviour at its worst.

Angelinflipflops · 28/07/2022 15:21

Believe you me it's not just the British

Somebody I now had a very picturesque house in scotland. Ever since that garbage Outlander came out theyve had huge issues with american tourists. Hes said about 5 different times he found them sticking their phones through his letter box or open windows to look inside. He had an American woman turn up saying it was her ancestors house and she was going to try to claim it back on that basis, seriously arguing with him about this on the front lawn until she marched off to the council offices.

endless stories of them barging into traditional highland themed wedding ceremonies up there and taking pictures.

EntertainingandFactual · 28/07/2022 15:44

@SpaceGoatFarm
Was the house featured in the programme hired out as a set house?
If so, you can understand the interest -opens the gates to all sorts of unwelcome intrusion.
If not, it seems odd that they are picking out your friend’s particular house randomly?

NotMyDust · 28/07/2022 16:11

re the able sharking, I think the venues could do more, like have a 'please wait here to be seated' sign or someone showing guests to a table, so they know who is sitting where and how many etc, or are able to say they there's no room right now...

would help a bit in summer even if it's in a pub garden and nit the usual way of doing things.

NotMyDust · 28/07/2022 16:11

sorry meant table sharking!!

Solonge · 28/07/2022 16:26

Well if they can afford that degree of investment there is no question they can afford a £5 emptying charge.

Solonge · 28/07/2022 16:30

Well certainly I don’t respect Johnson….lying, spoilt little scumbag and conniving arse wipe….those are his good points.

Solonge · 28/07/2022 16:43

No….that’s a weird way to look at things. If a person has a large rucksack they need to find ways to ensure they inconvenience no one. My driving instructors most useful advise, forty years ago was never inconvenience anyone else on the road….same in life.

OutDamnedSpot · 28/07/2022 16:51

@EntertainingandFactual
google ‘Nadine Dorries’, then you’ll understand.

Solonge · 28/07/2022 16:52

In France there is no such thing as the customer is always right…if there is a dispute in a shop or hotel…management always side with the staff.

Morgysmum · 28/07/2022 16:53

I guess you don't work in either retail or hospitality.
What can I say people are waxxers. Sorry to say this, but people are the worse. When you work in retail, people like to treat you like, shit they have stood in. Same applies for hospitality.
I think when they are on holiday, they feel even more entitled, to be arses.
It's not just me, a guy I didn't know, but had a royal mail top on, was chatting to a lady in boots, sounded like they knew each other, he said he was thinking he might switch to another job, so goes what would you do, he goes I don't know, but nothing that involves customer's. 🤣 I yot get that, she started laughing and you ate so right.

Solonge · 28/07/2022 16:57

Parking in side streets is legal…until councils give our residents parking of course people will park free….in parts of Cornwall where parking fees can be hugely expensive most people will tr6 and find free parking.

Angelinflipflops · 28/07/2022 16:57

I've worked in retail and hospitality and have had lovely customers, maybe it cuts both ways

PriamFarrl · 28/07/2022 16:58

People misunderstand what ‘the customer is always right’ means.
It doesn’t mean that they can get what they want on demand, it means that their choice is right.
The dress might look a shocker on them, or that might be a dreadful choice of nail polish but you nod and agree.

The only time I have heard 'the customer is always right' phrase is not from a manager, but usually from some fuckstick customer who has just finished off a whole bottle of wine without complaint before deciding it is 'corked' and they want a freebie or some moron punter who refuses to believe that your restaurant is 'full' and that their party of six rocking up without a reservation demanding a table. It might have originated from some department store flogging soft furnishings or cosmetics but it was seized upon by the entitled twat mob as a tool to beat staff with.

Just wondering what everyone does when they’re in a shop/ cafe whatever and a CF is going postal? Staff quite often aren’t in a position to stand up for themselves but as customers/ members of the public we can sometimes naicely ask CFers to stop spoiling the atmosphere for everyone else (only when safe, obvs).

One of my finest moments was when I asked a big sweaty CF to stop being so horrible to the hotdog staff in ikea when he was going to have to wait 2 minutes for another hotdog. A careful “mate, it’s really not their fault, how about you just settle down” in my Teacher Voice voice can work wonders ime.

failing that, I generally send managers an email telling them how well their staff dealt with a CF and leave a big tip.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 28/07/2022 17:13

My parents live next to a park. They've had families let themselves into the private garden and help themselves to fruit and vegetables. They've had families climb over and mess about around the pond because the children want to see the poultry. Apparently it's selfish to tell them to leave.

Its not quite the point of this thread, but I have had to call several customer service lines recently and have had great people helping me (albeit after quite the wait to get through). I found it quite sad that when I was thanking them for their help, they seemed so surprised at the thanks and one man even thanked me for thanking him. I am guessing that people similar to the ‘I'm looking at the view man’ had been demanding and rude to them for too much of their shift.

I do wonder if this is why the people on the Universal Credit helpline mainly have no empathy whatsoever, due to being abused. Despite the continuous lack of help, I do always stay polite as I assume it is just lack of training/the system making no sense to anyone. I actually did thank the guy I spoke to the other day as he was the first person I've ever come across at UC who actually seemed to care! I told him how much it meant to me to be treated as if I was worth something.

In my experience the bullies (men and women) who think it is totally acceptable to shout at some 18 year old or intimidate staff tend to pipe down when a larger bloke has a quiet word with them. They are cowards, but I am a big rugby playing bloke and I have at times intervened in a quiet manner suggesting that maybe they should reconsider how they speak to the staff. I have been that 18 year old getting screamed at by some dick head customer and it is horrible. I hate violence or using my size to intimidate people but sometimes I do 'step in'.

Lianne1977 · 28/07/2022 17:34

We did NC500 year before covid, but just drove and stayed in local hotels, b&bs etc and ate out every night locally. It was fantastic and all the locals were lovely. Didn’t see many camper thank goodness. Sounds like we wouldn’t want to return which is a shame as it was hands down one of the spectacular journeys I’ve had.

Oh I know it’s used like that by arseholes, but it’s not what the phrase means.

PriamFarrl · 28/07/2022 17:40

The full saying is ‘the customer is always right in matters of taste’.
Still doesn’t stop bellends though.

To the people advocating 30mph on single track roads, you’d get pretty short shrift from locals if you tried that in Shetland!

In North Devon many of our lanes are single track with passing places, they're twisty and the hedge banks mean anything much over 35mph is suicidal, I just wish people could learn how to reverse.

SpaceGoatFarm · 28/07/2022 17:51

They'd started doing Outlander tours based on the books and program up near culloden and his place just happened to be a very old stony scenic old farm cottage on the trail.

American plastic scots are now competing with american plastic paddies for levels of unbearableness and being weird and fascisty about their 'bloodline'. They also regularly like to tell how local scottish how they are more scottish than them now because of immigration to scotland and cos they dont walk around glasgow (or Glasscow usually) in kilts.
