CF Tourists - is it worse ??

We have just got back from a few days in Cornwall - we live in Devon, so spend a lot of time in both counties and are very used to tourists and holiday makers. We stayed in a 'pub with rooms on the beach, which was lovely. However - I am utterly gobsmacked by the level of CF we have witnessed in the 3 days. It feels like peoples entitlement is off the scale. I don't know how those in hospitality are dealing with it.

Wednesday - Woman went mental at the poor young lad serving in the beer garden - insisted she had booked a table outside. Very politely told her that they do not take reservations for the garden, just the restaurant. Screaming ' Are you calling me a liar'. He went in, and didn't come back out.

Friday AM - they serve breakfast for guests 8am-9.30am, then open for breakfast at 9.30am (lots of signs saying open at 9.30am). At 8.30am a group were outside - rattling the door. Member of staff opens the door, and lets them know they open at 9.30am. Lots of moaning - insisting they can have breakfast now etc. She says no - very polite. So he tells her it is disgusting that they allow guests to sit in the window eating when others can't ! ( and to make up for their error, they should serve them breakfast too)

Friday evening - Family of 6 rocked up - no space in the beer garden. Started shouting - so the owner came out. Man very angry - they had driven for 6 hours - and the kids needed feeding. The owner was great - polite but firm. The man actually suggested the owner walk around the beer garden and checked when people were leaving so they could secure a table. He said no. A lot of swearing. Asked to leave.

Drive home Saturday morning. Along a winding road along the coast - car in front just stops. Man gets out and stands looking at the sea. Single lane - so I cant go around him. After a few moments I beep - he stomps over to my car and says 'Can I help you' ... I say you have blocked the road - could you move please. To which he responds 'I am looking at the view - maybe you could just be kind' FFS !!!

If you are repeatedly getting clobbered by rucksacks just give people space

If you can't manage that ( most people can with a little effort ) go earlier or later

So just to be clear - you think backback wearers don't need to be responsible for their own choices and take care with their extra size. Instead everyone else needs to plan their whole lives around avoiding them?

Good thing you didn’t post something like that on a thread all about entitlement!

GrumpyMummy123 · 28/07/2022 12:37

I live in a part of the country with free roaming ponies and very delicate countryside. Everywhere you look there are big yellow signs telling you not to approach the ponies, don't feed them, don't pet them, pick up your dog poo as it's dangerous to ponies and flora. Also don't park on the verges as it damages the land.

Every sunny day you get cars suddenly slam on their brakes in the middle of the road, wind down their window and try and entice them over with a sandwich so they can get a selfie. Soo many people trying to pet the ponies. Cars abandoned everywhere and dog poo covering the ground at the the edge of the car park.

It doesn't seem as bad so far here as last year. But did see someone arguing with a volunteer car park Marshall when she was trying to say it was full they had to go somewhere else. You still get the entitled CF!!!

antelopevalley · 28/07/2022 12:38

In real life, people mostly manage to negotiate around each other. The kind of people who hit you with backpacks is the same kind of people who run into people's heels with buggies. Most people manage not to.

How do you propose I do that on a crowded tube? Especuially when the rucksack wearer's speciality seems to be swinging around without warning or awareness?

Ah! Be kind!! That lovely phrase uttered only by people who are never kind. I’d have rammed his car.

I've heard and seen ' Be Kind' used so inappropriately lately..almost in a sneery , sarcastic way.

I've noticed a lot of right wing commenters on forums using it when they are called out for having disgraceful, bigoted opinions.

The same type of people will also use ' mental health' in a smug ' gotcha' kind of way to avoid doing anything, to have a skive or avoid any responsibility for anything.

LouiseTweets · 28/07/2022 13:09

Haha. Your comment made my day!

Sounds like the people who think everyone else should get out of their way when they walk along with their eyes glued to their mobile phone screens.

I just hope none of them drive.

@FrenchBoule Why do you assume all caravan users are renting them?! How passive aggressive! 90% of caravan users own them

I believe when you leave school it should be mandatory to work for 3 months in hospitality so you learn how to not behave in public and realise why people in the know tip

Agree with the first part (to some extent, though not sure why it should only apply to school leavers when it's the older generation who are rude). For the second, I'd prefer if cafes, hotels etc paid their staff appropriate wages and actually shared the services charges with them.

Dexionmagic · 28/07/2022 13:37

We planned, in 2019, to do the NC500 in 2020. Routes planned everything.

Other things happened and so we postponed.

Since then we’ve read that its over crowded, a racetrack - bikers trying to do it in a day(?) a convoy. Then there are the comments on here about it.

Not sure if we will do it now?

My daughter got knocked down an escalator a little while ago after the man standing behind her, with an enormous rucksack, turned around quickly, without looking.

Fortunately, I was a couple of steps in front of her and she fell into me so no harm done.

A few weeks ago, my husband and I were having dinner in our local town (Bath). We were sat outside eating, on a table, in the middle of a row of 5 tables. One end tables was being used, us in the middle, the rest empty.
A large group of tourists arrived, shuffled and mooched@ about, then one of the group approached and said it would be polite of us to move (midway through eating) to the end tables (full of empty glasses and plates) so they could all sit together.

My husband pointed at his dinner and said I'm eating, no.
The guy got irate and called us selfish, my (very large)husband calmly stood up, and asked if he had been swimming in the River Avon pointed at it, and that if he doesn't adjust his attitude quickly, he may just find himself doing just that.

They sat either side of us waiting for us to finish and leave. We really enjoyed the following dessert, coffee and drinks.....

Brilliant. 🙌 Talk about a brass neck! Well done your DH for literally standing up to the cheeky bugger!

Frenchboule and I were talking about our experience of living on the nc500, a huge amount of the caravans on it are rented (you can see the branding from the various companies). But the point remains why rent or buy a caravan and spend all that money and not spend money to dump your waste correctly?

Hell yes. I've nearly been knocked onto the track by some halfwit with a rucksack. And they probably think that they've never knocked anyone over either, because they just don't realise they've hit you.

I know a PP linked to a screenshot further upthread but this is the "Too many Spaniards in a Spanish hotel in Spain ruined my holiday": metro.co.uk/2018/08/13/holiday-spain-ruined-many-spaniards-spanish-hotel-7832699/ It's a belter Grin

Threatening male violence is brilliant?
I would have called the police.

So if you have a backpack you can not go into a shop? Obviously you make sure you do not hit people with it. But if you are walking from campsite to campsite, then you have a big backpack. It used to be more common to do this before everyone just drove everywhere.

Actually it used to be common to leave large backpacks outside, also the same with muddy walking boots. But I suspect that has also gone by the wayside. (I'm talking about when I was doing it in the 80s which js probably before most people here were born)

DillonPanthersTexas · 28/07/2022 14:18

I would have called the police.

"Hello, police, what is the nature of the emergency"

"Someone has asked myself and husband to move pub tables and when we refused they called us selfish"

"Helicopter and SO19 armed response unit is on its way"

1nsertusername · 28/07/2022 15:05

Just to add that its the same in other countries.

Just moved back from a place in south america where the tourist numbers exploded in the last 5 years. Think from 500 a year to 10000. I blame the internet for accidental advertising for hidden gems that are no longer hidden.

People have become incredibly self centred and seem to think the world owes them a favour. They then tantrum when things are not going their way. It's so odd to witness as it's like dealing with a toddler!

Car parking and speeding were one thing, but the amount of human shit shocked me. Never had a problem with dog shit, just human shit.

We are back in the uk and have seen its here too. Increased numbers at tourist places is to be expected, but the amount to rubbish and CF behaviour has gone up exponentially. It's so sad as I think it's only going to get worse with population increases and travel disruption.

Just wanted to defend some van drivers, when its £70 to park a van for one night and you still have to pay for a warm shower I can see why so many will chance it in a layby for the night. No excuse for leaving anything behind but i was shocked just at the cost of campsites peak season theses days!

The NC500 used to be a cheap experience, now it's just another expensive Instagram tick trip which costs a ridiculous amount.
