Aibu to try and persuade her to choose something else or would you just buy the cake? 🫣😂I don't know if can bring myself to pay probably the best part of £100 for a green mr bean cake!

I think it is great and it will be fun to see the pics in a few years! I would give her what she wants.

That is a very generous amount to spend on a birthday cake!

NoGonnaLie · 25/07/2022 15:04

Can you not get a small cake like this and put the other £50 into savings for her.

To me £100 is a tremendous waste of money on a frivolous quickly forgotten moment.

Yeah i agree.

I'm sure it's just the bright colour(s) she's attracted to. Not the intrinsic artistry of Mr.Bean bought almost alive with the medium of icing 😂

They won’t print pictures that are copyrighted or similar, it’s only personal pictures you can print. I found this out when I tried and failed to find a Rah Ray Noisy Lion cake, and they basically don’t exist and I couldn’t get one printed at the supermarket!

Look on Ebay, lots of places print pictures regardless of Copyright!

Seriou · 25/07/2022 15:08

£100 for a cake is completely ridiculous under any circumstances other than a wedding cake.

When did this become the norm.

Greyhare · 25/07/2022 15:09

Buy the green cake and then you'll be the best auntie and if anything like. my nieces you'll then get the blow by blow account of how the cake turned their poop green 🤢

LosingTheWill2022 · 25/07/2022 15:09

You're coming across as weirdly snobby about a 5 year old's birthday cake.
There is nothing particularly hideous about that cake so what are you making such a big deal about?
I think you'll find the general consensus is 🤔at the amount you are willing to pay for a kids birthday cake. Nothing about the cake itself. Why would adults like the same type of cake as a 5 year old?

Blofield · 25/07/2022 15:10

why do you buy the cake? I’d be going to Asda and getting one for tenner

PandemicAtTheDisco · 25/07/2022 15:11

The birthday cake is for her enjoyment not yours. I'm never sure why people ask what someone wants then buys something different that they prefer themselves.

It makes me feel people don't care, can't be bothered or don't know me at all when they gift me with something that they like but is completely not to my taste.

hattie43 · 25/07/2022 15:13

It's an amazing cake but I had no idea they were that expensive. No
help because I'd be completely torn as to what to do , my head says no way would I spend £100'on a cake
but then I wouldn't want to let a little girl down either

rusticaflores · 25/07/2022 15:14

Buy it if you can, but maybe don't get a present too??

TooGood2BeFalse · 25/07/2022 15:16

My SIL is a fantastic baker and always makes one for my sons' birthdays. They are 6 and 10 now, and have had every theme from princesses,Frozen,Spiderman, rainbows, dinosaurs and at one point, traffic lights 🤣I wouldn't worry about the theme.Just have a great day with your niece x

Knittedfairies · 25/07/2022 15:17

I wouldn't spend that much on a birthday cake for a 5 year old either, and I'm doubtful she'll remember it either. 5 year olds just want to blow out the candles on a cake. My daughter was 5 or 6 and I had planned to make a teddy bear cake, which didn't happen. One of her friends told her mum that Knittedfairiesdottir's cake was 'lovely, and it was round' it tones that implied she'd never seen a Victoria sandwich cake served at a birthday tea...

Emotionalsupportviper · 25/07/2022 14:46

No she won't.

take a photograph as proof, because it will be lost in the mists of memory.

You say that, but I remember the year I picked an iced cake with a flower on it for my birthday and I was probably about 5! In hindsight, I probably would've much preferred the taste of the chocolate cakes my mother tried to steer me towards, but that was the cake I picked out at the supermarket and so that was the one I got. I even remember asking my mother to make sure I got the piece with the rose bud on it (most of it was just white icing), and she did. So you never know. Perhaps the hideous Mr Bean cake will be fondly remembered.

Silverswirl · 25/07/2022 15:19

Why not? Mr Bean is hilarious for many kids and adults. £100 is a reasonable price to pay for a well made / decorated cake. I used to make cakes and so many people grossly underestimate the cost of ingredients and time it takes to make the level of decoration they are requiring. You end up working for way less than min wage.

Beautiful3 · 25/07/2022 15:19

It's her birthday. If it's what you'd normally spend, then of course get it. If you would have spent that same amount on a barbie/frozen cake then you are being massively unreasonable.

shiningstar2 · 25/07/2022 15:21

The cake is lovely ...Just what most 5year olds would love. Buy I nearly swooned st the cost!! ...for something gone in a couple of days. I have just bought a great cake for my 14 year old dgd from M and S. £15. She loved it. Her birthday gifts came to about £200 but if I had spent a hundred pounds on a cake I would have needed to spend much less on her birthday presents. I suppose it depends on people's budgets. If that is your normal budget for a birthday cake go for it ...she will love it 😀

VestaTilley · 25/07/2022 15:23

Loads of places including some supermarkets print an edible image on to cakes. Just make or buy a plain jam sponge with white icing, and have a picture of Mr Bean printed on to it.

That way she gets what she wants, and you spend £15 tops.

CallOnMe · 25/07/2022 15:25

YABVU

Mr.Bean is amazing and as an adult I would love that!!!

However, I would never spend £100 on a cake!!!

VestaTilley · 25/07/2022 15:25

Just seen others suggested the printing picture. When I did my son’s Thomas the Tank cake I got a cardboard picture of Thomas on a skewer from a lady online, and inserted it in to the cake. Could you do that with Mr Bean?

Some crappy supermarket sponge with a printed rice paper photo is a million miles away from a very good handmade and decorated cake. Like getting no fills value vanilla ice cream from Lidl rather than gelato from Italy!

WeAllHaveWings · 25/07/2022 15:33

ds was mad about a certain TV character/show around that age. He wouldn't even been able to tell you what that show was nevermind if he had a cake with it on.

£100 is ridiculous for a 5 year olds birthday cake unless you have money to burn.

PearlClutch · 25/07/2022 15:37

£100? Good lord. No.

AryaStarkWolf · 25/07/2022 15:38

thestateofit · 25/07/2022 14:24

It's not the price I'd just prefer something a bit more tasteful 😂

It's not your birthday though, is it?

Perple · 25/07/2022 15:42

I’m an Auntie. This is for sure a non negotiable im afraid….

It’s not about you though? If you’re willing to spend £100 on a instagrammable “tasteful” cake then you’re being very unreasonable. You’re putting your own opinions over the child you’re buying for.
