Parents dating children

Thegroaninggurner · 22/07/2022 15:13

I often see posts on Facebook of parents saying they are going on a date with their children I find this absolutely cringeworthy does anyone else? To me you go on a date with a man or woman that you see as a partner not a child. Just saw one of daddy saying he's going on a date with his daughter really does make my skin crawl.

It gives me the creeps. A date is an event with a romantic intention.

I don’t date my friends when I go out with them, and I certainly don’t date my children. Ugh.

Maximoose · 22/07/2022 15:16

I go on dates with my daughter 🤷🏻‍♀️ And my friends. It’s just going out doing something together.

EV117 · 22/07/2022 15:18

Meh. I think it’s kinda cute. A bit like when people slow dance with their little kids at a wedding. You don’t have to link these things with ‘romance’. That’s on you.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 22/07/2022 15:19

Never seen anyone say they're going on a date with their children - ever! Confused

Besttobe8001 · 22/07/2022 15:20

I've seen it billed in the US as men showing their daughters how they ought to be treated which is so misguided. Any creep can buy flowers and open a door. What about teaching them sex ed and consent and how to say no etc.

But a date IS linked with romance. Confused

That said, as I said, I have never seen a parent say they are going for a 'date' with their child. That is a bit odd if people say that IMO.

Clarinet1 · 22/07/2022 15:21

Surely it’s just a bit of quality time/spoiling/make believe for the child. “Oh yes, princess, I will dance attendance on you while we have your favourite ice cream sundae” or whatever.

Sux2buthen · 22/07/2022 15:22

It's not so much linked to romance. Play date etc
It's nice, parents spending time with kids is hardly a bad thing

eldora · 22/07/2022 15:23

YANBU, creepy as fuck.

Hate it. Dating means romance, so I find this both irritating and cringeworthy. There are lots of other words that can be used (and were, before this trend started). It’s also a bit twee.

TheKeatingFive · 22/07/2022 15:32

The word has evolved. Kids go on play dates. No different to that.

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 22/07/2022 15:37

YANBU I think it’s weird af.
It’s an American thing isn’t it? Daddy and daughter date night 🤮

Sittingonabench · 22/07/2022 15:39

It doesn’t bother me so much - I think it’s good that people can make a special block of time to spend with people they love be it family or friends and don’t see why it shouldn’t be called a dare. TBH I think limiting it to romance is quite restrictive

Marblessolveeverything · 22/07/2022 15:42

Colloquially the word "date" means literally a date as in a day on a calendar agreed to do something - so a date with a friend, a date with a child. Not linked intrinsically with romance.

OneTC · 22/07/2022 15:43

I think it's a bit like when people get up on their hind legs at the idea of valentine's cards from parents to children.

Some people just can't stop thinking about sex

MassiveSalad22 · 22/07/2022 15:48

My friend grew up in South Carolina and literally promised herself to her dad in a ceremony until he gave her away to another man 🙃🙃🙃 there was a ring and everything. So, at least going to the cinema with your kid isn’t that.

MassiveSalad22 · 22/07/2022 15:49

I don’t use ‘date’ with my kids as that hasn’t really come up in conversation. But I do say ‘let’s get a play date in the diary’ to my friends regularly (for our kids to meet up, of course).

BiscoffSundae · 22/07/2022 15:50

People are happy enough to say play dates so don’t see the big difference though I wouldn’t say it myself

Sidge · 22/07/2022 15:52

But it’s all about context isn’t it?

Going on a date = romantic

Doing something on a particular date = not romantic.

Not even about sex, but about a different sort of love - romantic love not parental love. Valentines cards for your children is also weird IMO. Valentine’s Day is historically about celebrating romantic love.

MissyB1 · 22/07/2022 15:59

Why do parents think they have to give time spent with their kids a special name/term? Just bloody say that you took little Annie to the cinema!
My ds likes to go out for breakfast with me (it’s not my company he’s after it’s the pancakes!) I don’t call it a date ffs!

Marvellousmadness · 22/07/2022 16:04

So... do you hate it when your kid goes on a play "date" then??
It's just a name.

AnyFucker · 22/07/2022 16:04

I just file those people under stupid and get on with my day

Social media bollocks that sooner or later will be monetised. See Christmas Eve boxes, matching pjs, Easter Trees and presents etc.

Crotonifolia · 22/07/2022 16:10

Calling it "going on a date" is odd. I've never seen that.

My kids will often ask to have a "me and you day". DD coined it, and it's just a nice one on one time we do every so often.
