Port of Dover Critical Incident

AndreaC74 · 22/07/2022 09:27

Why are we blaming the french? they didn't vote for Brexit and aren't responsible for increasing/paying for extra capacity at the French border posts on UK soil.

Stamping passports is what happens to 3rd country nationals & that adds time, a lot of it, when dealing with 100s of '000s of passengers, plus having recently been to France, i ve seen UK people arguing with French officials because they don't want their passports stamped!

The UK seems incapable of organising anything at the moment, the numbers travelling across the channel is entirely predictable and delays we are now seeing were talked about pre 2016, i remember seeing the graphs on how long the queues would be for just a few seconds of delay for each passenger.... all Project Fear.

Actually, I have just noticed a discrepancy - Schengen Visa News must have misprinted but the percentages are still correct. Should be 1,482 flights cancelled Germany (6.12%) - 1,060 UK (3.2%).

Given it appears you have an interest in this subject could you also reveal the identities of the eight countries on that list supposedly doing better than the UK?

BTW I'm still not sure of the connection between a Belgian pilots strike and this thread...?

Pick a narrow date range to suit your argument, you ve chosen just a 2 week period..... cancellations have been happening all year.

But even given that small date range, UK is 2nd for cancellations and is on-going, with BA alone cancelling an additional 10,000 flights up until the end of October.

The news item i originally saw, for the first 6 months of 2022, put the UK at no1 Germany in 2nd.. that only alone will make the Gammons happy, can add that to Two WW's and WC... :)

The main purpose of this thread is to demonstrate that the Bristish English are best. Belgians are foreigners. Them doing things wrong, just goes to prove the English are best.

UK has had to cancel (%) more flights than any other european country...

Of all the countries mentioned above, Germany had the highest cancellation rate of scheduled flights to fly between July 1 and 15. Germany cancelled 11,482 flights scheduled to fly within this period, and its share of outbound flights cancelled stands at 6.12 per cent.

Germany is followed by the United Kingdom with 1,060 cancelled flights and Italy with 637 flights that were scheduled to fly between July 1 and 15.

@Clavinova Russia has had even more flights cancelled during that time period and they are unaffected by Brexit, which is probably why they campaigned so hard for it.

In fact, the UK is 4th (worst) on the list in percentage terms (July 1st -15th);

I picked the latest chart available - widely reported.

The news item i originally saw, for the first 6 months of 2022, put the UK at no1 Germany in 2nd

Why can't Germany just employ EU citizens? Plenty available according to Michael O'Leary.

Belgians are foreigners.

Ryanair are paying some of their Belgian staff below national minimum wage according to the article - and the 'foreign' pilots are not striking;

This weekend, only Ryanair flights operated by non-Belgian pilots will depart, while flights by Belgian pilots will remain on the ground.

@Clavinova Is Russia not a European country today?

I seem to recall that some posters got terribly upset that Britain had a lower covid death toll than Russia and it was a European country at that point.

Lonelycrab · 24/07/2022 14:46

Meanwhile, Daily Mail, top story at the moment, top comment:

"French anti-Brexit police chief and insistence on passport stamps " More DM hypocrisy. If the police don't do their job here, there's outrage. Yet they expect the French police not to do their jobs as it would suit us. They're simply controlling their border, following the rules, agreements and laws ... maybe the UK could learn some lessons.

Seems even the faithful are seeing where the blame truly lies, and it ain’t with the French authorities.

Italy and Belgium have a higher covid death toll per 1 million population than the UK.

@Clavinova so Russia isn't in Europe today. Thank you for the clarificaiton.

AndreaC74 · 24/07/2022 15:50

I once backpacked in Southern Africa, one of the worst border delays was at Beit bridge (South Africa to Zim) but even that didn't involve over night sleeping in a car.

Some families queuing for a crossing being delayed by 21 hours!

This debacle is being reported worldwide, so Johnson has achieved his stated aim of "Global Britain"

I've got no time any more for the non regretful Brexit voters they have helped to ruin our country for sweet fa. They should own the bureaucracy and chaos and are far worse than the mindless vandals that smash up say a bus shelter because now the consequences of their choices are smashing thing up on an epic scale.

SueSaid · 24/07/2022 16:28

'Italy and Belgium have a higher covid death toll per 1 million population than the UK.'

No no the UK has the highest death rate in the world. SirBeer and Twitter says so. It's all BoJo's fault for having a 10 minute, ahem, 'party' at work.

This is all despite numerous stats that prove the Twitter judgement incorrect. We don't bother about facts though.

cakeorwine · 24/07/2022 16:59

Masses of lorries queued up on the M20.

Good to see Dover appears to be getting better but Folkestone seems bad at the moment.

I hope that they do improve the infrastructure and show some foresight and planning for the proposed biometric border checks

Unfortunately, foresight and planning aren't words associated with this Government.

It's a fact that the EU are planning on introducing new checks - a good way to take control of their borders so they know who's coming in to the Shengen area.

I wonder if any links can be provided to show evidence that the Government are planning a system to ensure that Channel ports will be ready for these changes?

What about people trying to leave the country in EU-registered cars with EU passports?

They still have to 'leave the UK' so go out of the UK passport control booths. I don't know if the French have introduced EU only passport booths. Its not a long distance between the UK booths and the French ones.

Or Brits with EU residency permits driving EU registered cars...🙄

By the sounds of it they will be stuck in the queues way back from any booths, and AFAIK in if any event they subject to the same customs checks as everybody else.

It would be quite bad if the French opened a booth just after UK passport control for EU citizens and someone drove to it by mistake, They would then have to drive out of the queue and attempt to get to the back of the other cars in the non EU queue.

It's not like airport queues.

As France is a sovereign country, it's entirely up to them how they operate their system for entry to the EU. If they are able to arrange an "EU citizens" channel, good for them. The withdrawal agreement allows for it.
