Port of Dover Critical Incident

AndreaC74 · 22/07/2022 09:27

Why are we blaming the french? they didn't vote for Brexit and aren't responsible for increasing/paying for extra capacity at the French border posts on UK soil.

Stamping passports is what happens to 3rd country nationals & that adds time, a lot of it, when dealing with 100s of '000s of passengers, plus having recently been to France, i ve seen UK people arguing with French officials because they don't want their passports stamped!

The UK seems incapable of organising anything at the moment, the numbers travelling across the channel is entirely predictable and delays we are now seeing were talked about pre 2016, i remember seeing the graphs on how long the queues would be for just a few seconds of delay for each passenger.... all Project Fear.

And we are all clear that the people who didn't get the joke and have responded earnestly are clearly remainers?

Grin

Yep. Got to point out the 'joke', repeatedly so it seems.

Brexit?

balalake · 23/07/2022 15:28

@notimagain many of those who voted for Brexit gave little thought as to the consequences, as they expected a Remain win. Even Nigel Farage did and as acknowledged this.

Only a week ago via Eurostar I went through customs/passport checks and they take about a third longer than pre-Brexit.

JocelynBurnell · 23/07/2022 16:24

The UK cabinet office snubbed a proposal to double the capacity for French government passport checks at Dover back in 2020.

Of course, Liz Truss now has the brass neck to blame the French.

Theonlyones · 23/07/2022 16:30

These types of events will be more frequent as a result of Brexit. We're no longer part of the same travel area. People need to wake up to that and plan accordingly. Things are no longer the same as pre-Brexit, they can't be, we voted for change...and increased and burdensome border controls for both exit and entry to UK are part of that.

Hang on.
The EU imposes red tape and makes all our lives more complicated. In voting for Brexit I voted for fewer rules, why should the French stop me going to France if I want to?
Luckily Liz Truss has promised to get rid of all the EU laws, and I am sure the new ones we get will be like the super duper Australia and New Zealand trade deals she has so successfully negotiated.

SueSaid · 23/07/2022 16:46

'These types of events will be more frequent as a result of Brexit.'

It's funny how it happened at the end of term isn't it, almost as if there was massive extra demand. I guarantee if you went to Centerparcs you'd be backed up in queues for ages too and that isn’t Because Of Brexit is it. Here's a tip, expect queues if you travel at high demand times. Granted 6hrs is taking the mick but as been said repeatedly even the French admit there was a tech glitch and it wasn't BOB.

Have we had travel chaos in the airports yet? It will all be Johnson's fault obviously.

Careful jgw1. There are people on here who don't spot irony.

Yes. Remainers, ironically.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 23/07/2022 16:50

A lot of brexit people seemed to be desperate to leave the EU despite also thinking that nothing would change if we did. Including the Tory government. There really is no cure for stupid.
And we're all stuck with the consequences.

@JaniieJones You know very well it can't possible be Johnson's fault he is only responsible for tending the pot plants and party entertainment in 10 Downing street.

I thought by putting a couple of obvious sillys in, people would realise.

Still to subtle?

Nope. Permanently Fummin Remainers think you're being deadly serious yet they say it's Brexiteerers who are the 'thick' ones.

@JaniieJones For me the think ones are those who think it is acceptable for a 56year old man to have a birthday party but not children.

oops, c not n.

SueSaid · 23/07/2022 17:07

'For me the think ones'

I don't like calling anyone thick tbh, I'm just repeating the slurs made against brexiteers aka folk with a different opinion to others. Yet here we have a thread full of spoofs and 'jokes' yet the only folk falling for it are those on your side. Bit of an own goal tbh.

Cake anyone?

DuncinToffee · 23/07/2022 17:18

Ah well keep blaming the French for taking back control of their borders and keep listing those Brexit benefits

And Johnson broke the law.

AndreaC74 · 23/07/2022 17:19

So @JaniieJones Dover Port Chief Bannister now saying post Brexit border checks ARE responsible for the delays and that all infrastructure at the port needs to be looked at going forward, even with all French Booths staffed....

What i find incredible is Govt has had 6 years to sort this out but appears to have done little or nothing, 4 new booths installed last week.....

Trying to be positive here, Brexit has happened, i don't like it but we wont re join anytime soon, so the only thing we can do, given brits like their european hols, is to work with France and get agreements in place so this is far less likely to happen in the future.
Because behind the frustration of tourists, is delays in imports and exports, perhaps even more important?

Remember also, even tougher checks coming in for next year.

I have a team and a side. Well it is certainly an exciting day to discover both of these within hours of each other.

There are opinions with some basis in fact and there are fairy tales, if you keep believing in fairy tales that have damaged other people and the country you love then yes, you are thick - especially given that Brexits keenest supporter is a proven liar, who no one in the Tory contest would give any sort of job too and told us all he is untrustworthy!!!

Yet what he told you over Brexit was all true... ok.

No more blue EU tape for us, instead we will have red white and blue Union Jack tape, which is far superior.

@AndreaC74 Did you miss the months we spent earlier this year going round in circles with Janiie who is utterly convinced that it was perfectly necessary for Boris to have a birthday party with cake, but could not say why children couldn't have a similar party?

AndreaC74 · 23/07/2022 17:29

Yes @jgw1 i wonder whether in fact there have been no queues at Dover because they simply were not long enough?

When will it dawn on her that BJ wants the office of PM without any of the responsibility... apparently he has told friends he 'll be back as PM within the year... sounds a bit like Trump and rather sad.

Well if you want a job doing properly ... you'd never have given it to Boris Johnson.

Speaking of the blond wombshell, I've remembered that his hero Churchill managed to serve 2 terms as PM despite losing the 1945 election.

notimagain · 23/07/2022 17:41

@AndreaC74

What i find incredible is Govt has had 6 years to sort this out but appears to have done little or nothing, 4 new booths installed last week.

Part of the problem was for a while post the referendum far too many people inside government and outside sat back and did sod all by way of preparation. Some of that was down to Brexit not being defined initially, just “leave means leave”, and then after that some were convinced that the UK would get what they wanted in the negotiations and that the EU would fold, remember “they need us more than we need them”, “German car makers won’t allow it”…….

As a result I think many thought ultimately the EU wouldn’t dare impose standard third tier nation border restrictions and customs on hard working British families, so didn’t bother with the preparation until it became obvious quite late on that yes, facilities would be required.
