Port of Dover Critical Incident

AndreaC74 · 22/07/2022 09:27

Why are we blaming the french? they didn't vote for Brexit and aren't responsible for increasing/paying for extra capacity at the French border posts on UK soil.

Stamping passports is what happens to 3rd country nationals & that adds time, a lot of it, when dealing with 100s of '000s of passengers, plus having recently been to France, i ve seen UK people arguing with French officials because they don't want their passports stamped!

The UK seems incapable of organising anything at the moment, the numbers travelling across the channel is entirely predictable and delays we are now seeing were talked about pre 2016, i remember seeing the graphs on how long the queues would be for just a few seconds of delay for each passenger.... all Project Fear.

Easy way to solve this is to close the French passport control in Dover and move it to Calais. Do the same in reverse for the UK passport controls.
This way each country will only have its own incompetence to blame for any delays.
Dover and Calais have both been disasters for decades before Brexit.
I ditch France now and only go via Harwich to Hook of Holland now. A pain free experience.

That wouldn't solve anything. It won't speed up passport control. It'll just mean that some people will be queueing at sea, the rest will still be stuck in Dover waiting for the boats now unable to offload in Calais to come back.

I think anyone who voted for Brexit shouldn't be allowed dual passports. Make them wait in long lines with the rest of their fellow citizens.

Frankly, anyone who voted for Brexit should have the word 'IDIOT' tattooed on their forehand in union jacket colours and daily mail type font, then covered in honey, feathered and, finally, fed to the lions. French lions.

DomusAurea · 22/07/2022 19:24

Just my opinion, you know. A mere suggestion.

Vote to end freedom of movement results in…. not being able to move freely anymore. Shocking I tell thee!

What did people expect?

We were never part of Schengen, so there was always some form of border control.

Bunnyfuller · 22/07/2022 19:36

@DdraigGoch we were totally part of Schengen and the changes are massive, not least the cessation of sharing information on possible terrorist activity.

Lonelycrab · 22/07/2022 19:36

so there was always some form of border control

Small changes in border control can have massive backlog implications. See upthread for examples.

WillMcAvoy · 22/07/2022 12:57

I've never gone to France via Dover so genuine question. Did they need to stamp all the passports before Brexit? How did border control work?

If you had an EU/British passport, there were no further checks. No stamping. No visas. No limits.

Now, you have to have your passport more thoroughly checked. You need to have a visa if you are moving to France, you need a visa if you are going to work in France, you need a visa if you have already spent 90 days in France in the last 180 days....there's more. And that's before we get to all the extra customs rules....

How can anyone imagine it can't take much longer, post Brexit? This is the first proper summer since the end of the Transition period, it was ALWAYS going to be chaos.

So Brexit has caused things to slow down. I don't know why the French didn't send enough officials to man the booths but if they have staff shortages that is understandable, the same thing has caused problems with travel in the UK, you can't just magic staff up.

Bunnyfuller · 22/07/2022 19:36

We weren't in the Schengen Zone - the UK government wouldn't accept total free movement without ID checks, eg as you can do from France to Germany without any border controls at all. However, passport checks were quick, no visa restrictions or time limits on travel or time spent with in EU. EU citizens could travel to the UK with just an ID card rather than a passport.

The Brexiteers on the thread are making me LOL hard. It’s like watching the 7 stages of Brexit grief. Some are in denial ‘let’s pretend it’s not happening! #Bekind!’ some are angry ‘shut up it’s nothing to do with Brexit, the French are shit!’.

The behaviour is weird to watch in real-time.

When will they get to the acceptance stage?

Some would rather take a sledge hammer to their own family than admit its a fucking disaster - that hasn't even reached peak Brexshit yet.

Some can't be helped. Maybe smoking them out through starvation will work.

Look, another remoaner. How cute.
Brexit means we have taken back control of our borders, no more unregulated immigration, no more sending money to the EU to spend on foreigners, that money instead can be invested in the NHS by paying American companies to provide a worse service than we had before.

Did you see Panorama? The Eu furloughed their staff. And used the money saved from wages to upgrade their airports. Baggage now takes 30% less time to come through than it did previously.

Baggage problems in Amsterdam, Dublin, Paris and Frankfurt this month:

Now that we are free of the EU we do not have to follow the common agricultural policy we have much more control of our farming and together with the wonderful trade deals Liz Truss has achieved we have far greater food insecurity now than we did before.

@Clavinova Are there baggage problems at Dover?

DuncinToffee · 22/07/2022 20:02

None of those lead to a critical incident clavinova.

We weren't part of Schengen. That's why we had passport checks when leaving and entering the UK, even though we were part of the EU

Norway is part of Schengen but not part of the EU. When we went from Denmark to Norway, we didn't have to show our passports. But there were custom lanes

Bunnyfuller · 22/07/2022 20:06

@jgw1 i know a fair few farmers, and they feel utterly duped by Brexit and are selling farms left right and centre as without EU subsidies, or labour, they can no longer break even.

Absolutely at the very least. Those Pesky Gammony Sun reading <can they read?> Brexiteerers and their failure to staff French passport booths. The cheek of it.

Which just goes to show we should have followed Nigel Farage's suggestion and had a Norway style arrangement with the EU. As it was we have a wishy washy remainer Brexit that no one is happy with.

They should definitely have to go through a especially slow twat travel lane.

I suppose on the plus side, a day spent blaming the French again, means a day when everything isn't the fault of immigrants or poor people.

Used to be so easy. Just show your passport and through you go.

Now it's going to be longer - because more checks, questions and a stamp. Even an extra minute will make a difference with a lot of cars to get through.

At least they haven't introduced biometrics yet for entering the EU

www.biometricupdate.com/202111/uk-unprepared-for-eu-biometric-entry-requirements-lords-committee-warns-home-secretary

UK Home Secretary Priti Patel has been admonished in a letter from the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee where they warn her that the country appears unready for the upcoming EU biometric entry system and pre-arrival authorization requirements
The letter written by Baroness Sally Hamwee, chair of the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee, processes the dire warnings presented to the committee by travel chiefs in early November.

Agreed, we were never ever part of Schengen, There's a nice map right at the start of this piece:

www.schengenvisainfo.com/schengen-agreement/

There was some talk that there was going to be a loss of sharing of info on crime, but that wasn't Schengen related..

What I think we really need to know is do the French know what a woman is?
