I've read this so many times recently on so many threads where women are definitely being abused in one way or another, and they always mention in passing that they can't do XYZ recommended to gain some independence or get away to some degree, because they can't drive.

Ive read it so many times recently that it doesn't feel like a coincidence anymore. Do abusive men specifically target women who can't drive, who are easier to trap and force into dependency?

My DH is quite controlling and makes a big fuss if I ever say I want to learn to drive. Interesting thread.

My MIL was married to a very controlling man. He always told her she'd "never be able to drive" and that they couldn't afford the lessons, or for her to have a car (despite the fact that he was a mechanic with his own garage business who used to pick up cars for a song).

He was financially abusive too, always kept her very short of money but spent loads on his hobbies. After he died, they found £80k cash stashed in a biscuit tin in the loft.

This is very concerning @Ringingabell.

Has this thread been an eye opener for you?

My husband wanted me to learn to drive when we got married but it was impractical fitting in lessons when I was working in London. A few years later I started but my dad died and I took a break a few years later again back in London I started driving again but with an old car and 2 hr lessons with BSM Fulham Rd. My dsis and my dh took me out. Despite my dsis and my driving instructor telling me not to worry as I had a 2nd test booked but I passed.

I think it's confidence, a lack of money, time etc
