To think most shops should be shut on Sundays

I have family in Jersey and over there most shops are shut on a Sunday.
AIBU to think this could be a good idea to introduce here in the UK?
It would give retail workers a Sunday off every week from having to work.

We used to have that didn’t we? It was abolished in the late 90s I think.

PresidentByeThen · 18/07/2022 19:22

What if the retail workers want to work on Sundays though?

In many cases, it can help with reducing childcare costs

BaronessBomburst · 18/07/2022 19:24

The shops used to be shut on Sundays, and Wednesday afternoons. And there was no late night shopping, even at Christmas. It was shit.

HangOnToYourself · 18/07/2022 19:24

YABU that would be massively inconvenient for most people. Those retail workers dont work 7 days per week you know they can have other days off. Many people who study rely on being able to work weekends

luxxlisbon · 18/07/2022 19:24

No. NI has very repressive Sunday opening hours and it’s stupid.
Religious views shouldn’t be pushed on the rest of society.

dementedpixie · 18/07/2022 19:25

Yabu
We have pretty normal shopping hours on a Sunday in Scotland compared to England

IGotItInTheSales · 18/07/2022 19:26

No thanks

We take a good percentage of weekly budget on a Sunday
I like working Sundays
Our weekend staff rely on a Sunday income

So no.

Hatsoff5 · 18/07/2022 19:27

@Heroicallyl0st yes my mum is an 80s child she said the same town was shut.

I'm with you OP. Even staff working weekends doesn't help the mums.. there was much better child friendly hours back in the 90s (but that's a whole other thread).

Wafflehouse · 18/07/2022 19:27

No thank you, I’m a retail worker and work alternate weekends, it reduces my childcare problems and I don’t mind working them. We do still get days off in the week.

Similarly if I need to take the dcs out clothes shopping I only have Saturday or Sunday to do it as they’re obviously at school all week, no way do I want to be out with everyone on the one day of the weekend the shops would be open.

riesenrad · 18/07/2022 19:28

No, they shouldn't. In fact they should be allowed to open as much as they want to. People don't have to work for them if they don't want to work Sundays, but actually there are plenty of people looking for part-time work alongside studying - and it would also give parents a chance to work when the other partner is at home, so they don't have to worry about childcare.

I also think that town centres are quite grim on a dark winter's Sunday afternoon and would be much better (and safer) if shops were open later.

Starlightstarbright1 · 18/07/2022 19:28

I would prefer people who work sundays or b/h's are paid more. It used to be that way.

Luidaeg · 18/07/2022 19:29

No

Topgub · 18/07/2022 19:29

Why?

Why Sunday?

Aposterhasnoname · 18/07/2022 19:29

My DD works Saturday and Sunday in a shop to save on childcare costs. She most definitely diesnt want them to close.

riesenrad · 18/07/2022 19:30

The answer to that would be to require set shifts and none of this zero hour nonsense. That said, some people like zero hours, they just work as and when they want to. For example, retired people who just want to earn a bit more cash from time to time. When I worked in a library we had ladies of a certain age covering holidays and sickness.

Jalisco · 18/07/2022 19:30

It used to be like that. Not everyone celebrities Sunday or wants Sunday off. Improving conditions for retail workers doesn't mean getting Sunday off.

Burnt0utMum · 18/07/2022 19:30

Some people prefer to work Sundays and have a day off in the week. Some other people might only have Sundays off and only be able to do their shopping on that day. You could say the same for a lot of workers, attraction staff, restaurant staff etc, but the what would there actually be for people to do on their day off if everyone else is off too and everywhere is closed?

Yes I used to get double time for working Sundays when I had a Saturday job at Woolworths Grin

Intransigentcat · 18/07/2022 19:31

I work Monday to Saturday almost every week, Sunday is my only chance to shop

MsFrenchie · 18/07/2022 19:31

Are you very young OP? Shops were always closed on Sundays, which was shit, and inspired the Smiths song.

InChocolateWeTrust · 18/07/2022 19:31

Why sunday? Very few people in the uk are practising, church attending Christians observing sunday as a day of rest.

riesenrad · 18/07/2022 19:31

what would there actually be for people to do on their day off if everyone else is off too and everywhere is closed

sit at home and read your Bible!

EVHead · 18/07/2022 19:32

It’s market forces isn’t it? If one or two places open then the rest will feel they need to so as not to miss out on trade.

I used to hate shops being closed on Sundays. It was often a good day for shopping if you worked Monday to Friday.

withthefeelignofgreece · 18/07/2022 19:32

Why does Jersey follow this approach though?

OP posts:
RonnieMcdonnie · 18/07/2022 19:34

no thanks, only chance we can go shopping, and I used to work in retail and would happily work weekends as it was better for childcare
