To think most shops should be shut on Sundays

I have family in Jersey and over there most shops are shut on a Sunday.
AIBU to think this could be a good idea to introduce here in the UK?
It would give retail workers a Sunday off every week from having to work.

I'd have the shops shut from Christmas Eve until January 2nd.

I'd make a lot of changes to retail in this country if I had the ability to. I'd stop supermarkets and general shops selling alcohol, and restrict it to off-licences. I'd do the same for cigarettes and tobacco - you'd have to go to a tobacconist for that. Supermarkets would only be allowed to sell healthy, nutritious food. Anything unhealthy would be restricted and only sold in a shop which sold that particular item, cake shop, biscuit shop, crisp shop, ice cream shop etc. It would be a win win situation as many jobs would be created from all the new shops and most people would eat healthier as they wouldn't have time to get round all the individual shops for their vices, they'd generally stick to just one or two.

So not only do you want to decide what day off the week people have off work, you also want to dictate when they take a week off their holidays - when the weather is likely to be pants.

Please don't go into politics...

CharlieAndTooManyCharacters · 19/07/2022 22:09

Don’t forget the fact that you have to go to specialist crisp shops to buy crisps because that sort of vice cannot be encouraged. 🙄

XenoBitch · 19/07/2022 22:12

A crisp shop? I have heard it all now!

Sounds good to me... In fact, if I had to go to a special shop to buy crisps, I would probably buy more than I do at the moment. Because a) I would be able to kid myself that I wouldn't be going every week and b) that's all that's being sold there - everyone is in buying the same thing, so nobody would be judging anyone else.

Actually, imagine a self serve crisp shop. Massive buckets of all the crisps you could think of. Pay per 250g or something. Get a big mix of Pom Bears, Walkers, Wotsits... that actually sounds pretty good.
Dragons Den, here I come!

KeyboardWarriorsUnite · 19/07/2022 22:30

Do you want a business partner? I'm in!

Like Walkers mix ups, but on a much bigger scale!

I don't think that would work, the crisps would go stale if they were kept loose in massive buckets.

Only if they were there for any length of time. We plan on having loads of customers.

DaniRabbity · 20/07/2022 17:21

Oh I was imagining something like Nigella Lawson's crisp bucket, on a grander scale.

10 days? I don't have a fridge big enough to last a week for our family. During lockdown one of us went shopping every 5 days.

You are very controlling about your ideas. People can buy what they want, I don't have time to run around from shop to shop to buy items and I can't see a reason to be penalised to buy a bar of chocolate.

I work with a commute of over one hour on the train so no way I can shop at work and carry it home. DH works often until 6-7pm so we can only shop either late or at the weekend.

We are not back in the seventies where my mum would go shopping 3x a week to the supermarket and butcher 10 minutes away after I left for school. Modern times don't work with antiquate ideas.

I also agree that shops should be open later during the week. There seems to be a massive disconnect when town and city centre shops are closing at 5.00pm at the same time people are finishing work and would possibly like to go shopping. If they don't want to open for more hours they should open later and do 11am-8pm or similar.

But supermarkets are open late in the week. Lots are 24/7.
With other shops they are open weekends as has been said. Presumably the staff would like to finish at a decent time too.
Queses are usually horrendous on Sunday, I know where I used to work they were bad all the time but especially Sunday and always short staffed on every department. Just my experience.

Sunday should be repackaged as the "secular sabbath". A day of rest and reflection for everyone. All shops should be closed including online shopping.

Does your reflection ability only kick in on a Sunday?

Haha, nice way to add a bit of satire and sarcasm to the crazy argument from OP.

Why does Sunday have to be any different to Saturday? We are a secular society - having a "reflective" Sunday would still be harking back to when you were meant to go to church and sit around the parlour while Father read the Bible.

As for having specialist shops for "unhealthy" things - who decides what is unhealthy? Things like avocados and Marmite are high in fat and sugar respectively, but they are not usually considered to be junk food.

riesenrad · 21/07/2022 08:49

salt not sugar (Marmite might have sugar too, I don't know as I am in the "hate Marmite" tribe :) )
