To think most shops should be shut on Sundays

I have family in Jersey and over there most shops are shut on a Sunday.
AIBU to think this could be a good idea to introduce here in the UK?
It would give retail workers a Sunday off every week from having to work.

The shops used to be shut on Sundays, and Wednesday afternoons. And there was no late night shopping, even at Christmas. It was shit.

Gosh I’d forgotten about Wednesday afternoon closure. I’d always forget and go to the post office.

I don’t think shops should shut on a Sunday no, though I rarely ever go to any. If I do have to force myself to the shops it’s a Saturday

Lincslady53 · 18/07/2022 20:45

We had a holiday in Menorca a few years after Sunday opening became the norm. There was a big Fiesta on in the town and every shop was closed so all the staff could join in the celebrations. Compare this with England where on big occasions everyone flocks to the shops. Sad really.

FinallyHere · 18/07/2022 20:48

And be massively inconvenient for all the nurses, doctors, health care workers, police, fire fighters, call centre staff. Key works of all types who provide the kind of service which is required 24/7.

And not that great for people who are happy working Sunday in return for time off at other times.

Simples.

weaselish · 18/07/2022 20:51

No way! The hours on Sunday are too short as it is. I work all week and the kids do stuff on Saturdays. Like many, Sunday is the only day I can get to get things from an actual shop rather than Amazon.
Growing up, nothing was open Sundays and it was rubbish.

SingingSands · 18/07/2022 20:51

Despite living in England for 23 years I still get annoyed that I can't do a supermarket shop after 4pm on a Sunday.

I'd hate to go back to Sunday closures - it was so boring!

SpartacusNotEsther · 18/07/2022 20:51

I worked in retail until recently and absolutely hated working weekends

I currently work in retail, and Sunday is my favourite day to work, for more than one reason.

We should go back to shops being shut Sunday

Why? Because you don't like working weekends? It sounds like you don't now anyway.

Blackmoggy · 18/07/2022 20:54

What about people who work all week and need to shop on a Sunday?

What about people who really benefit from that Sunday job?

I don't believe people who say it's their only day to go shopping, unless you work Monday to Saturday from 6 in the morning until 10 or 11 at night and most have delivery options and some are open 24 hours.

But we don’t base our laws on what you want, so why should we do this?

Blueberry40 · 18/07/2022 20:57

Why would they close on Sunday? It’s just another day and already really inconvenient that the opening hours are shorter. I work 6 days most weeks so Sunday is often the only day I have free to go shopping. When I worked in retail the Sunday shift was really popular as they would pay more.

Not just me. Lots of people don't like working Sundays. In fact where I worked no one liked working weekends.
Could turn it round and say why should they be open on Sunday just because you like working that day?

I lived in The Netherlands and only large non food stores once a month were open on a Sunday. They have a different way of life to us, enjoy bike riding, walking and not so much shopping. However, there are more small supermarkets locally.
Also, many Dutch work a four day week, so have more free time.

LondonQueen · 18/07/2022 21:01

Most uni students rely on working Sundays to top up their student loans.

I think it’s easy to forget how very boring weekends were in the 80s. It wasn’t just shops, there was much less happening.

weekends are livelier now and that’s to the good, and while I think we should shop less flex hours are good. Lots of people shop on a Sunday and it gives people weekend jobs.

Jersey doesn’t go it because it is a pretty sleepy old fashioned place. It’s lovely but no way in hell would I want to live there.

I think it's the way things were. Perhaps more tradition. The good shops like Woolsmiths and Adams... People managed. I hear the point about weekend jobs though it's valid also.

Misunderstoodagain · 18/07/2022 21:13

No I live in Northern Ireland and Sundays are an absolute bollocks

Florenz · 18/07/2022 21:15

I think the shops should be shut on Sunday. It would give all retail workers a day off and it would give everyone else a break from consumerism. Too many people go shopping just to fill the empty void in their hearts, spending money they don't have to try and buy happiness. Having the shops completely shut would give them pause for thought and have them reassess their lives and would lead to personal growth and achieve self-actualisation.

reluctantbrit · 18/07/2022 21:17

I am from Germany and shops are closed on Sundays. But lots of towns have opening hours until 8pm during the week so people do have a chance to go after work. ]People who work p/t stop at 2pm, schools are often out earlier as well. So, you have time to go shopping during the week.

Here I stop work at 5pm and shops close at 6pm, in our highstreet it's often 5pm so unless I drive to the nearest big supermarket 30 minutes away there is nowhere I can get things under the week.

DD is in school until 4pm and has clubs. She is too old for me to buy clothes without her and thanks to ridiculous sizing I refuse to order and return all the time.

Saying that, the way the high street shops develop I don't have to worry about going to the shops anymore, it will be online only.

SmellyWellyWoo · 18/07/2022 21:18

No.

Florenz · 18/07/2022 21:21

I also agree that shops should be open later during the week. There seems to be a massive disconnect when town and city centre shops are closing at 5.00pm at the same time people are finishing work and would possibly like to go shopping. If they don't want to open for more hours they should open later and do 11am-8pm or similar.

SpartacusNotEsther · 18/07/2022 21:25

Could turn it round and say why should they be open on Sunday just because you like working that day?

You could try that, but you were the one that said they should be shut because you didn't like working weekends. I was just offering an alternative pov from someone that currently works in retail. And as you seem to have discovered, there are jobs available that don't require weekend working.

In fact legally, in the UK, any worker can opt out of Sunday working. So anyone that doesn't want to, even in retail, can have that day off. If so few people want to work Sundays, then how come there are enough staff to keep them open?

girlfriend44 · 18/07/2022 21:29

Waste of time debating as it will never happen now not ever will we go back.

Shops are quite busy on a Sunday.

SoupDragon · 18/07/2022 21:30

introduce 😂😂😂

BiscoffSundae · 18/07/2022 21:31

I think the opposite and want them to get rid of the Sunday hours should just be open as usual

Why does Jersey follow this approach though?

I assume on line shopping isn’t so fast and services like Amazon prime isn’t super speedy in Jersey. It must be heartbreaking to run a shop, have to shut one day a week and watch the delivery van go past.
