To think most shops should be shut on Sundays

I have family in Jersey and over there most shops are shut on a Sunday.
AIBU to think this could be a good idea to introduce here in the UK?
It would give retail workers a Sunday off every week from having to work.

Sundays are just another day. Religion should play no part in lawmaking.

Heroicallyl0st · 18/07/2022 19:34

Just googled - it was 1994 I was thinking of - there was a big relaxation of the Sunday trading rules. I was a child and remember it being a big deal when we were suddenly allowed to go to a big supermarket on a Sunday!

I think in a mature society we should all be able to decide when to work and when to rest, and the principle of having a day’s rest every week is a good one. I pretty much stick to that - tend to only commit to one out of the house thing during a weekend. But I don’t think it should be written into law - we’re adults following various or no religions, and we’re not a dependent society following one religion anymore.

Letterspostname · 18/07/2022 19:35

There are very few practising Christians in the UK, so why Sunday?

You know retail workers don’t work 7 days a week right, some people like to work Sundays. It can help with childcare arrangements and is good for young adults in full time education.

What we need is for super rich retailers to give their workers decent contracts with set hours every week (if the worker so desires). Not opening Sundays isn’t going to help with that.

Feart · 18/07/2022 19:36

Definitely not! The opposite needs to happen as that would be a backwards move! Very few people are remotely interested in going to church these days and it was totally shit when shops weren’t open on a Sunday. It annoys me that they close at 4! What’s the reason for this in this day and age?

EuripidesEumenides · 18/07/2022 19:36

If shops were closed on Sundays then I'd just become more reliant on online shopping. Getting to the shops on Monday to Friday isn't plausible. I suspect plenty of other people are in the same boat. I can't imagine it would be a great outcome for an already struggling retail sector.

Berlinlover · 18/07/2022 19:37

I work in grocery retail and work every four out of five Sundays. It suits me as I prefer to be off during the week for a variety of reasons.

Why does Jersey follow this approach though?

Because you're about 30 years behind us

Why does Jersey follow this approach though?

With respect, who gives a fuck?

Other places/countries have their own laws, for them to decide, many that differ strongly from the UK

CableTidy · 18/07/2022 19:41

I live in Scotland and I can't get used to the short shopping hours on Sundays in England. Retail usually involves weekend work and plenty of people want to work weekends.

Yodaisawally · 18/07/2022 19:43

What's so good about Sunday's that the shops should be shut? What about hospital, care workers, emergency services would they all get Sunday off too?

ouch321 · 18/07/2022 19:43

Er no.

parenthood1989 · 18/07/2022 19:44

It would give retail workers a Sunday off every week from having to work.

For what reason?

Why does a retail worker need a Sunday off?

What about people in other industries that work on Sundays, should they all be off too?

KnittingNeedles · 18/07/2022 19:45

DD works Sunday only and is more than happy with that. English Sunday trading laws are ridiculously restrictive as it is.

Polichinelle · 18/07/2022 19:46

Who cares what Jersey does? Do you want us to follow a 24/7 Asian style pattern as well? Why not an Israeli one and shut on Saturday? We have something that works, and it's very convenient. Let it be!

Fairislefandango · 18/07/2022 19:46

Why does Jersey follow this approach though?

Who cares? Another place doing something doesn't mean we need to copy them!

Glencanto · 18/07/2022 19:48

Fuck that. They should cancel the current restrictions on Sunday trading hours too.

IGotItInTheSales · 18/07/2022 19:48

Jersey are stuck in the dark ages that's why!!!

Numbat2022 · 18/07/2022 19:49

No thank you. I remember the deadly dull Sundays of the 80s and early 90s.

MsFrenchie · 18/07/2022 19:49

withthefeelignofgreece · 18/07/2022 19:32

Why does Jersey follow this approach though?

What a bizarre question. That’s like asking why we don’t close shops on a Friday yet some Arab countries do, or why we don’t sell guns in Tesco but America does.

Why does some other country’s bizarre practice suggest that we should do the same here?

SNAFU247 · 18/07/2022 19:50

No thanks! I find the current Sunday opening hours crap as it is please don't make it even worse!

I used to work retail and got time and a half pay on Sundays and loved it!

Ilikewinter · 18/07/2022 19:53

No infact the opening hours should be relaxed on a Sunday like they did for the 2012 Olympics (I think it was), drives me mad that no where opens until 10.30 or 11.00am

Getintoyou · 18/07/2022 19:53

Hell no! We also need to get rid of Sunday trading laws. Outdated.

Norgie · 18/07/2022 19:59

No thanks. In my home country all the shops are closed on Sundays and Easter etc, it's pants.
If anything shops etc should be allowed to open when they like and for as long as they like.

Blueroses99 · 18/07/2022 19:59

I got my first summer job in around 1997 when there were higher pay rates for a Sunday. I chose to work Saturday though as Saturday rate x8 hours was marginally higher than Sunday rate x6 hours. Sunday closures would be a huge step backwards in a 24 hour digital economy.

PeekAtYou · 18/07/2022 20:00

I would like the same rules as Scotland for Sunday trading.
