A Queen's guard being given water. Can you imagine wearing a wool jacket & bearskin hat in this heat? This uniform needs rethinking for extreme heat.

Stupid uniform. Stupid job. It’s yet another ‘just for show’ role.

Maybe Prince Andrew should have a go wearing it; I wonder if he would sweat?

Wool is actually surprisingly good in hot weather.

Apparently they have bags of ice inside their hats

How would this work? They'd have dribbles trickling all down their faces/heads..

It's ridiculous to make people suffer in this weather for the sake of an ancient and rather stupid uniform. You are quite right.

Yep.

ReadtheFT · 18/07/2022 15:11

Anyway they know what they signed for, same with those "serving" in afghanistan or wherever. No one forced them.

Ihaveaquestionn · 18/07/2022 15:11

Saragossa · 18/07/2022 14:15

It really is outdated, and actually cruel to make someone stand there wearing a ridiculously hot outfit, in this weather.

I can't think of another country that still practises these batshit traditions.

My sister (a police offer who is required to ride a horse in todays heat) was told the changing of the guard will not be called of because it is a “duty not an event” 🙄

AppelFrench · 18/07/2022 15:12

Horizons83 · 18/07/2022 14:16

It is real bearskin. However it is not farmed, as someone suggested above - it is taken as a by product of the culling of bears that Canada undertakes each year. So if the bears are going to be killed anyway I think it's fair enough that the skins are put to good use.

They have tried synthetic ones but can't apparently get one that's appropriate.

Real bearskin sheds the rain without losing fluff, the synthetic ones they tried went soggy & flat

It does seem ridiculous that they can’t have a summer uniform with a different hat. They could wear ones like the old-style policeman’s helmet.

It's totally irresponsible...imagine dying of heatstroke because of tradition and because it "brings in tourist revenue"

Has a Royal Guard ever died of heatstroke? I've never heard of one. Meanwhile plenty of regular soldiers and recruits have

LoobyDop · 18/07/2022 15:16

But then again I expect there are plenty of amusement park staff who have to swelter in giant furry cartoon character costumes in equally hot weather, without any of the training, salary, benefits, pension and status that the Guards have.

Louiselady500 · 18/07/2022 15:19

They are military soldiers not employed by the royals. They change over every 10 minutes. I’m sure the soldiers would agree there are harder jobs in the world even on a hot day!

I don’t hear people complaining about our military soldiers fighting in immensely hot countries for months on end with often limited supplies.

Put it in perspective people!!!

Georgeskitchen · 18/07/2022 15:21

These men are serving soldiers. Many of then have probably seen recent active service in Afghanistan where its much hotter than this.
I'm pretty sure they get regular breaks and water etc.
And nobody forced them to join a ceremonial regiment. They signed up of their own free will

antelopevalley · 18/07/2022 15:21

I am fine normally with this tourist display.
But it is ridiculous to put people at risk of health problems in this heat unnecessarily.
Someone mentioned soldiers fighting. That is totally different. Presumably in countries like Ukraine you do not get the other side just deciding to have a cease fire because of hot weather. Some duties are essential. This is just nonsense.

Unlike the millions of people who would like to the royal family that 'need' a ceremonial regiment consigned immediately to history.

It's not the individual soldier: it's the institution that is a bloody awful joke. This photo demonstrates the ludicrousness of it all.

JudgeJ · 18/07/2022 15:36

Anonimousse · 18/07/2022 13:57

I'm more concerned about the fact they are farming and skinning bears in this day and age for a pointless uniform, that would look just the same with a good quality faux fur

I think they've been artificial for many years.

Ridiculous. I’d be so pissed off if this was my brother/son/husband being put at so much needless risk to his health.
It was enough seeing so many fainting at the Jubilee from standing for hours.

You mean all one of them?

So you sign up to do a job and that means the employer can treat you how they want?
You know that is not the case.
But the Royal Family are exempt from so many laws they probably can legally treat these poor men how they want. No way should this be allowed.
It is dangerous.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/07/2022 15:38

two soldiers died a couple of years ago training on brecon beacon - training to be posted to hot countries
