A Queen's guard being given water. Can you imagine wearing a wool jacket & bearskin hat in this heat? This uniform needs rethinking for extreme heat.

How do they all not get heat stroke!?

TheBigPeach · 18/07/2022 14:27

I can’t imagine they would have the energy to protect themselves let alone the royal household should the need arise, they probably have heat exhaustion.

ItsSnowJokes · 18/07/2022 14:27

Soldiers carrying 30kg packs in the heat in Afghanistan not including their gun, but that's not such a good headline as slatting the royal family. Do people only care about the heat when it's about the royals?

These soldiers knew what they were signing up for when they joined that regiment.

oakleaffy · 18/07/2022 14:27

Bloody outrageous!
Inhumane.
If I was Queen, I’d absolutely have a summer uniform for Guards and no heavy bearskin.
I really feel for the Guards having to parade and stand upright in this heat in sweaty wool Uniforms and bearskins.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/07/2022 14:28

It does seem unnecessary, they could wear hot weather uniforms, I'm sure they must have such things.
When I was taken to see the changing of the guard when I was a kid, there wasn't a bearskin or red coat in sight because they had Ghurkas on duty.

Galileu · 18/07/2022 14:28

Yeah. That's the same thing that's being discussed about this photo. 🙄

mycatisannoying · 18/07/2022 14:29

Just stupid. YANBU.

oakleaffy · 18/07/2022 14:30

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/07/2022 14:10

i doubt it is bear skin nowadays

Sadly it is real bear 🐻 pelt.

dolphinsarentcommon · 18/07/2022 14:31

That looks staged to me. Why would it be ok for him to have water given to him like this but not ok to drink it himself.

But it is the same. There have been pictures for years of soldiers with all their kit in Afghanistan in 45 degree heat and I have never seem a post on it. One photo of a guard outside the Palace and everyone says how disgusting it is. What is the difference? The only one I can see is people get to slate the royal family in this one.

Maybe I get pissy about it as I have had a family member do 3 tours of Afghanistan and he lost some good friends out there. But there is no difference at all in my eyes.

NoRegretsNoTearsGoodbye · 18/07/2022 14:33

@oviraptor21 you do realise that extreme heat is far more dangerous than extreme cold?

Redruby2020 · 18/07/2022 14:33

0blio · 18/07/2022 13:42

Yes it's ridiculous. I feel so sorry for police officers, fire fighters and medical staff in full PPE as well. It's 35 degrees here at the moment and pretty unbearable in a t-shirt and shorts!

Yeah but police would still have to wear some sort of uniform otherwise how would you recognise them. And plus they have to wear a stab proof vest etc.

Isonthecase · 18/07/2022 14:35

The difference is in afghan they're mostly wearing protective equipment which is hot as hell but saves lives... That outfit is just hot.

They get the bearskins from culls these days apparently, the bears are killed regardless. Unfortunately they're seen as a bit of a pest in parts of Canada, like the local equivalent of badgers.

OrOrchids · 18/07/2022 14:36

YANBU.

I've had a change of heart and want to see a president repressing the Uk rather than the royal family. There was something in the news about a picture of Andres that could shake the monarchy. Enough of this archaic institution.

Decolonise and transform it all.

Galileu · 18/07/2022 14:37

One soldier is doing something useful and relevant to his training/job. The other is being used as a tourist prop for an appallingly outdated, utterly irrelevant-to-modern-life institution.

This photo illustrates the ludicrousness of the guard and the 'rules' that they have to observe. A photograph of a solider in Afghanistan would have a completely different context.

One is mad. The other isn't.

That's the difference.

Turnthatoff · 18/07/2022 14:37

I’m more shocked that he’s not holding the water bottle on his own. Wtf?

dolphinsarentcommon · 18/07/2022 14:31

I’m wondering about this too

OrOrchids · 18/07/2022 14:37

*want to see a president repressing the Uk 😂😁
oops, representing that is

BeerPongChampion · 18/07/2022 14:39

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/07/2022 14:10

Unfortunately it is real. There was a petition recently about it and it was due to be debated in parliament a couple of weeks ago, I’m sure nothing will change though.

Titsywoo · 18/07/2022 14:41

Apparently they have bags of ice inside their hats

misteek · 18/07/2022 14:43

surely thats the responsibility of the Army when they should wear a lighter uniform ? i cant see its the queens role le at all .But any chance to get at the Royal family gratefully accepted on here from the first comment !!

Blackmoggy · 18/07/2022 14:58

Yup, it's a joke.

Just throw away the whole monarchy.

Perhaps then we can start healing our emergency services which are on their knees.....

Rant over.

Wishyfishy · 18/07/2022 14:59

I agree. There are reasons for others to be wearing heavy and uncomfortable clothes - doctors in scrubs and PPE etc - but him wearing that benefits nobody.

Pumasonsatsumas · 18/07/2022 15:02

The discipline is amazing. Hats off to them.

Thehonestybox · 18/07/2022 15:03

It's totally irresponsible...imagine dying of heatstroke because of tradition and because it "brings in tourist revenue"
