To hate the big garden pool trend, and my neighbour who has one

We live in a terrace so very close proximity to each other. The neighbour next door has a big pool crammed into the backyard. She’s been practically living in the garden all week. She has the one toddler, a boy, who seems to be quite naughty.

All I hear all day through my open windows is happy screaming, angry screaming, crying, lots of splashing, “wooooo”, “one two three go!” “High five!”. Must have heard the child’s name about 100 times today. They finally went inside at about 7, but not before I heard her say they’ll come back out tomorrow. I’m cursing that pool. Before she got it they never went in the garden. They’ve lived next door 2 years and I never heard a peep from them. I don’t think the pool is even safe. It’s quite deep and she’s set up a slide going onto it. And then there’s the environmental impact of filling it up everyday.

unprecedented heatwave sweeping the world and you’re complaining that a mum has sorted out a swimming pool to keep her wee one comfy. Is that right?

tell you what. I’ve ordered one for my kids and dog to keep them cool next week.

I live in a terrace because it’s all I can afford.
I don’t think it will stop when the weather gets colder because she’s bought the slide and a sandpit too. I don’t know how she’s getting in and out her back gate. It’s rammed with things out there now.
All very strange, because like I said, they never went out there! I used to see her taking him out with his bike or toy shopping trolley everyday, to the park I assume.

She sounds like a good mum doing the best to entertain her toddler. Leave her alone you sound so miserable. You could always go out and get a life

If my neighbour had a huge pool in their garden - right now I'd be making good friends with them 🤣🤣

Just about to suggest this!

Ihatemyroad · 17/07/2022 08:17

Oh get a grip and a life and stop watching your neighbours!

They're not doing anything wrong!

The weather is lovely, they’ve put a paddling pool in their garden and she’s having fun with her toddler during the daytime!

Honestly OP you haven’t got a clue what it’s like to have a shitty neighbour! I live in a terrace house and my neighbour has been parting in their garden until 2am with music so loud I feel like I’m in a nightclub! Another neighbour has their friends round and they’re in their garden until around midnight.

Calmdown14 · 17/07/2022 08:21

I couldn't get irate about a small child having fun while well supervised.

But I would have slight concerns about where it is draining to in such a small garden. Is there a drain at the back of you that she can utilise?

CulturePigeon · 17/07/2022 08:25

Sympathy, OP.

The world seems to divide into those who think gardens are basically extensions of their living/dining/play rooms and those who want them to be tranquil green sanctuaries from the noisy, stressful world. There's no way to reconcile these two world-views, is there? Of course with small children there will be noise but personally (just my view!) I would hate to live next door to a party-garden family.

Dajeeling · 17/07/2022 08:27

OP come on now… and your last two reasons in your first post ring very hollow? The environment and safety? You are just pissed off with the noise, don’t pretend it’s because of other reasons.

Titsflyingsouth · 17/07/2022 08:28

YABVU

They are not littering, damaging your property, keeping you awake at night, attempting to intimidate you etc. They are just playing. It's hot. She has a young kid. A pool is probably the best place to be right now. They have a right to use the garden every bit as much as you do...

And toddlers are not 'naughty' . They are at a developmental stage that involves lots of exploring boundaries and coping with big emotions. You would have been exactly the same at that age.

I don’t know if they have a filter I’ve haven’t paid that much attention. I just assumed they were refilled every day.

Why on earth would you think it was refilled every day??

Sswhinesthebest · 17/07/2022 08:30

Don’t worry it’ll be too cold soon. But the pool going, will leave a nice big space for the trampoline…

MeatballMeatball · 17/07/2022 08:34

Our neighbours in a terrace had a hot tub, grandma loudly shouting at kids all day and them screaming and then the parents and their friends loudly using it all night. We moved. I have sympathy for the OP.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/07/2022 08:39

Why don't you push a sharp nail into a long stick then lean over the fence and poke at it . You can tell your devastated toddler neighbour that the wolves must've got it

Hmm
GreenManalishi · 17/07/2022 08:39

Suck it up. You live in a terrace, you're not lady of the manor with riff-raff on your lawns. This is the sound of life, and believe me, it could be a LOT worse. Settle yourself, put some music on, pour yourself a long drink and count your blessings.

TooTightFit · 17/07/2022 08:41

OP, do you ever get a bath, or linger in the shower? If so, you are environmentally unfriendly too.

Fill up pool, let DC play in it, without soap or bubbles, then pour the water on the flowers, grass etc. so it is not wasted. Doesn't everyone do this?

Good job you don't live next to me. My eldest has a drum kit and a piano.

ProfYaffle · 17/07/2022 08:43

"I would have slight concerns about where it is draining to in such a small garden."

We have a pump with a hose that goes directly into the drain. It empties an 8ft pool in about 10 minutes.

user1471538283 · 17/07/2022 08:43

I'm very noise sensitive due to my experiences however, this wouldnt bother me. Its just a little one and the noise stops at 7pm.

MenopauseSucks · 17/07/2022 08:48

I'm surprised that they actually bought a sandpit!
I know you cover them up overnight but where I live, there are so many cats they'd be using it all day as well!
It was only when I joined Mumsnet that I heard
Hot Tub = Sex Pond
but I was well aware of
Sandpit = Litter Tray

nomistake · 17/07/2022 08:49

Bore off misery guts. Imagine complaining about kids in a pool til 7pm during a heatwave.

howrudeforme · 17/07/2022 08:52

both sides have the pool.

brilliant for the kids and their parents. I don’t mind the noise of happy children. But what pisses me off is that they have the generators/filter machines running next to our fence all day until about 5pm - damned loud so I can’t enjoy any R&R in our garden.

but our summers are short.

Felixsmama · 17/07/2022 08:54

You have two - three days then the pool won't be used as it's raining. So try not to worry.

Wishyfishy · 17/07/2022 08:58

They didn’t go outside because he was a baby last summer maybe and not really into it?

It’s good for children to be outside as much as they can.

From the environmental side too.. I don’t see the harm? I usually think of garden days as great for the purse and the environment as they mean we can go a few days without needing to go elsewhere - no need for cars or public transport, no buying plastic covered children’s food at soft play etc.

Scianel · 17/07/2022 08:58

In my ideal world I'd be able to sit out in my garden in the middle of nowhere in perfect serenity.

However I'm in suburbia so have to accept that lawnmowers, pressure washers, noisy children and the odd bit of extension building are my lot.
Mostly I remember to feel grateful that it's not loud parties, the smell of weed, swearing and revving.

HangingOver · 17/07/2022 09:00

I'll swap you OP. My neighbor bought their DC a karaoke machine to use in the garden 🙃

Throw it into the swimming pool.

Igo · 17/07/2022 09:07

You sound a bit uptight!

we have a massive paddling pool in the garden and we also live in a terrace of 4, my kids are reasonably quite but they are allowed to enjoy their garden.

mine don’t make a massive amount of noise but the next doors either side have been told to tell them to turn it down if it gets out of hand (once in 3 weeks while I was upstairs putting the washing away they decided to have a fight and next door intervened)

toddlers are not naughty…
