To not want their car on my driveway?

Parkingmoan1 · 16/07/2022 13:44

I live in a city in a ground floor flat, no garden but I have a driveway that comes with my flat.

I don't have a car so this Is why I don't know if I'm being unreasonable..

My doorway / driveway gets alot of direct sun so I like to dry my washing out there on racks when the weather is nice. I also like to sit out there on a chair with a cold drink and a book sometimes.

A few months ago a family moved into the flat above me and have taken to parking their big people carrier on my drive. They didn't ask my permission, just assumed they were entitled to because I don't have a car.

My frustration is when their car is there I can't put my washing out, it also blocks alot of the sun. They park it diagonally aswell which is a PITA for me getting my pram in and out.

They are out there at the minute cleaning and hoovering the car about 3ft away from my doorstep so I can't sit out and enjoy the sun / a bit of peace and quiet.

AIBU to be unhappy about them using my drive in this way? The poll results will determine what, if anything, I say to them.

Also I am sure you pay more rent each month to have a car parking space. They can’t just steal it!

I agree planters - would your rental agreement allow you to instal a permanent rotary washing line

carefullycourageous · 16/07/2022 14:17

Agree just go and say something, be light, say they maybe weren't aware.

Darkstar4855 · 16/07/2022 14:17

No parking sign, some decent sized planters and a couple of chairs should do the trick.

DahliaMacNamara · 16/07/2022 14:20

It makes it slightly easier, surely, that you can hide behind your landlord when speaking to them. Less confrontational. Your landlord definitely won't want CFs making use of facilities s/he rents out to tenants. What happens if you move out? They'll want this nipped in the bud.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 16/07/2022 14:20

If you don't feel comfortable don't approach them. Sending the email to the landlord and putting a big planter (Wilkos have all their summer pots reduced at the moment, but probably everywhere has) is what I'd do.

coolbottlesummer · 16/07/2022 14:21

They probably don’t realise that it is a private space. I’d go out and politely say to them this is a private space and ask them to move their car. Thinking about it will be worse than doing it. If they don’t like being asked then leave it to your LL to sort out but it’s such a lovely weekend, it would be a shame not to be able to use your driveway.

if they go out with the car put stuff on your drive so they can’t automatically park there on return.

ittakes2 · 16/07/2022 14:21

I suspect they just misunderstood where they can park so write them a note with a map

Takingthepmaybe · 16/07/2022 14:24

Well if you don’t tell them not to how will they know you don’t want them to? Maybe they don’t know that it’s your driveway?

just go out there and explain that it’s your driveway and you’re sorry but they can’t park on it.

ShirleyPhallus · 16/07/2022 14:24

Just be careful about using the space for planters and to dry washing, it’s possible there will be a clause somewhere to say that it’s not allowed.

Drying laundry outside is actually prohibited from the ownership lease of my rental flat!

Parkingmoan1 · 16/07/2022 14:25

I've had a quick chat with my landlord who asked me to put it all into writing and he'll get onto the project manager first thing Monday morning thus saving me the need to address it myself.

Cowards way out absolutely but they don't seem at all approachable and I don't want to get into any rows.

I'm popping into town shortly so I'll have a look in wilko for the planters.

Thank you for the replies, I'm glad I posted as I was sitting on my hands thinking I was being unreasonable.

Oh wow that's interesting. I did tell landlord what I want to use the space for and he didn't mention it being an issue.

Put your driveway up for rent on JustPark and set the price pretty high. Let them know.

Eatthecake80 · 16/07/2022 14:28

Seriously grow a back bone!.it’s not their drive!..they are taking the piss by not even asking you!

charge them rent for the space?!

Excellent for the landlord to address it - this is one of the perks of renting - you should take advantage of it because renters get shafted in many other ways!

If you have told your LL that you want to use it for planters and they have said nothing, I would go ahead. It is not your job to worry about these matters - again that is your LL's problem. You only have to comply with your tenancy agreement.

easyday · 16/07/2022 14:32

You should have said something the first time they did it - now as you have t they think it's fine. You will have to be a grown up and talk to them.

tttigress · 16/07/2022 14:34

Aquamarine1029 · 16/07/2022 13:55

You should have said something the very first time, but you definitely need to address this now. You pay for that space, it's yours. Tell them nicely yet firmly not to park there, and don't enter into a discussion about it. It's not up for debate.

Yep, good fences make good neighbors, set out the boundaries in the first instance.

As it is rented, I guess at least you can get the landlord involved or move in the worst case.

But it is annoying when someone moves into an area and makes someone's life difficult.

MarmiteCoriander · 16/07/2022 14:34

I'd be worried about oil and rubbish being left on your drive, along with any legal implications if say one of them fell over and injured themselves!

As others have suggested, I'd get large planters on wheels- incase you have a friend visit that needs to park there. Set up an umbrella, seat, table and enjoy your space. Maybe they assume its for the block- and not park of your flat?

Lineala · 16/07/2022 14:36

You can get a lockable post put in to prevent them using it. I did this for my tenant and it solved the issue as others can't use it.

You don't need to confront the neighbour just do it. Alternatively if they are renting contact both the management company and the landlord.

diddl · 16/07/2022 14:37

Fencing with planters for privacy & "gardenness"?

Hope it gets sorted Op.

Great big plant pot ride in the middle of your drive, problem solved

This. 👍😁

bellabasset · 16/07/2022 14:42

This isn't OP's flat but rented from a LL who owns the parking space and even though OP doesn't have a car another tenant might. So going through the LL is the correct way to proceed.

Also drying racks are temporary as is a chair so providing the LL doesn't object or its not against the lease why not? Also it sounds as though the people carrier is blocking access to the flat

ThinWomansBrain · 16/07/2022 14:44

without a diagram 😂it's hard to know - but they could perfectly reasonably assumed that it's communal parking for the building. Hopefully the LL letter will resolve the issue, but YABU for not saying anything at the outset.
