To not understand the constant panic

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

how utterly unresiliant we have become or how terrified of life certain people are. It's hardly surprising so many kids have anxiety issues these days.
It must be taught behaviour from parents surely

Resilience is hearing and heeding the warnings and planning appropriately.

Exactly what's been going on in the threads in the Weather topic.

Resilience isn't just ploughing on regardless and telling those who plan they are ridiculous pearl-clutchers

There’s always drama llamas on mumsnet and elsewhere unfortunately. The Met Office name every passing breeze these days, they love a bit of panic. Lots of countries which aren’t built for heat cope with unusually hot temperatures without the panic seen here. It’s embarrassing. And no, U.K. homes are not generally well insulated, no idea why this nonsense keeps getting trotted out.

It's more embarrassing that people can't cope with the Met Office reporting the fucking weather tbh.

I've already had a text from a mate uttering the dreaded... Stay Safe.🙄

😂

I have to agree with you. We have to make a big deal about everything. It's two days, we can survive two days. It won't be nice, but life isn't always comfortable.

You dont think its a 'good idea'.

Whats that mean to mean, is someone going to come and speak to the poster and give them a telling off??

This site is hilariously hysterical. Its pure entertainment. Every second word is triggered, traumatised, vulnerable, victim, red flags.

It's not a good idea because of the etymology of the word, and the use of it can really change one's mind about a poster.

InFiveMins · 15/07/2022 21:18

YANBU. I don't particularly like the heat but it is what it is, I'll try and enjoy it. In a months time it'll be freezing and we'll be wishing for hot weather 🙄

The Met office have started reporting things in the way where they describe things as 'dangerous' or give 'warnings' completely in alignment with modern sensibilities.

As I said on the other post. I’m on the south coast and predictions where I am is 30 Monday and 31 Tuesday. Where is it going to be 37?

The coast is likely to be cooler than inland. Where I am it's forecast to be mid 30s. Some places 40.

Personally I'm not worried for myself. Although I live in a top floor heat-trap flat with my 9MO so a little concerned for her. Just lucky I don't have to work I guess so will just do what I can to keep us cool.

Oh dear, who cares.

Newmama29 · 15/07/2022 21:20

Living in Scotland I’m panicking that we’re never actually going to get a proper summer with a nice heatwave 😂

SueSaid · 15/07/2022 21:22

'if this kind of news doesn’t provoke fear then honestly, I’m really pleased for you'

Honestly.

Let's all be a bit concerned that Mon and Tues will be very hot. The very elderly and vulnerable will need extra care. There is no need for 'fear'. The nhs will not implode.

I've nearly dislocated my retinas going through some of these 'my poor darling couldn't possibly cope in such hot weather camping, at an end of year theme park trip, at school'

They probably won't have to cope, as the parks will be deciding today whether they can safely remain open. They weren't built for temperatures pushing 40, and its bad enough when a railway line buckles, and that's on the ground. Just imagine that on a roller coaster

I've noticed a few running events being cancelled, and I'm glad that most people are being sensible and considering adaptations to plans. This isn't just a couple of hot days. It's a run of very hot days, including two where it could be unprecedentedly hot

It's not uncommon in parts of Australia for bitumen on roads to start melting.

Things like letting kids run outside on surfaces which have been in the sun in that heat for hours can leave them with second degree burns. Slides in the sun at those temps, you may as well let them slide down a burning skillet.

Children can suffocate from muslins draped over buggies to shield them from the sun. A buggy with a muslin/light sheet draped over the hood to shield a sleeping child can reach upwards of 50° if the outside temperature is 34°. Cars become literal ovens.

So I've just got back from my Aldi shop and can confirm with a previous poster that the water panic buying has begun.
Apparently they ran out by 2pm. Also no magnums left 😥

Buy magners instead! It's delicious!

Still plenty of water in the taps, so who needs bottled?

antifascist · 15/07/2022 21:24

heattreat · 15/07/2022 21:12

I wouldn’t be confident about the Tube service on Monday. I just came through Liverpool Street and there were signs up saying there would be reduced services.
Btw 2000 people in the U.K. died because of the 2003 heatwave so lucky you for being ok.

Lucky you , that's a one in 59.65 million, hardly lucky!

Jesus, please reassess!

stats aren't your strong point

heattreat · 15/07/2022 21:25

Do tell me then @antifascist what's the stats?

Theluggage15 · 15/07/2022 21:26

It’s funny seeing the media going on about the first ever extreme heat warning from the Met Office, well yeah it would be the first one wouldn’t it considering they only introduced the extreme heat warning system in 2021.

EV117 · 15/07/2022 21:26

Have you ever been to Britain? All of our buildings are designed to retain heat.

😂

SueSaid · 15/07/2022 21:27

'So I've just got back from my Aldi shop and can confirm with a previous poster that the water panic buying has begun.'

God it's all so predictable isn't it. At least we can be thankful Piers Morgan isn't on morning telly anymore telling us we're all going to die.

antifascist · 15/07/2022 21:28

heattreat · 15/07/2022 21:25

Do tell me then @antifascist what's the stats?

if 2000 people died that's 2000 out of 67.44 Million which is about 1 in 34000

Pebbles16 · 15/07/2022 21:28

In London. Not looking forward to it and work is making contingency plans because although our office is Arctic, getting there (for many of us the Northern line and, at the best of times, hot as hell - Central line) is not tenable. Yes, it is two days but the infrastructure is not built to allow humans to cope

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 15/07/2022 21:28

I'm not looking forward to it at all. I was in Australia in Dec in 40 degree heat and it was grim doing anything & i was on holiday....so with work and school it's going to be even less fun.
The hysteria in school WhatsApp group was unbelievable though. Air conditioned coach 30 mins to air conditioned venue where outside area is forest and therefore shaded vs being at school but apparently school trip (first ever due to Covid) should be cancelled.

rnsaslkih · 15/07/2022 21:30

I read somewhere on the internet that the heatwave could leave people without power/water. I imagine that’s why people bought loads of bottled water. It’s a fairly logical thing to do if you believe what you read.

Oblomov22 · 15/07/2022 21:31

The hysteria is ridiculous. We will cope because we'll have to. All these people with fucking hysteria and anxiety really piss me off and they really should go and see their GP.

BirmaBrite · 15/07/2022 21:31

I'm Australian so you Brits are making me laugh a lot right now.

Why because we have less catastrophic forest fires/flooding/skin cancer rates than you do ? at the moment

LovePoppy · 15/07/2022 21:32

Daftasabroom · 15/07/2022 18:00

Hahaha this is nuts, how many of you have actually experienced 40C heat without Aircon? I worked in the Med for years and anything over mid thirties people are going to die. And you're okay with that?

apparently as those people are “vulnerable” it’s fine and they were snowflake wussies anyway
