To think people don’t seem to understand how hot it is predicted to be next week?

On threads expressing concern re the heat, people keep saying ‘what do you think they do in hotter countries’?

According to my BBC weather app, next Monday and Tuesdays predictions are:

35 in Lahore, Pakistan
32/33 degrees in Miami, Florida
33 and 32 degrees in Kingston, Jamaica
29 degrees in Mali (which is the worlds hottest country, apparently!)
30 in the Maldives
38 and 35 in Spain.

The current predictions for me are 36 and 37 degrees.

AIBU to think some posters don’t realise we are talking about temperatures hotter than some of the hottest countries in the world!?

@Prettypussy @LimboLass there's a blood ph thing, I think, and definitely a thinning of the blood when you live in hot places.

There absolutely are physiological changes to help you manage different climates, just as there are physiological changes that help with altitude.

Vikinga · 14/07/2022 23:32

Climate change is real and here and if we don't stop it now then life will become impossible or intolerable

Notjustabrunette · 14/07/2022 23:33

I’ve lived in hot countries, we didn’t have air con in every room but used fans. These are available here. Buy one. Open your windows at night to let the cool air in. Close windows and curtains on the sun side of the house in the day to keep the heat out. Don’t go for a jog at lunchtime time. Wear a hat when out and about.

Til from my family member who grew up in a very hot country, at the beginning of the night fill the bath with cold water. When the heat gets too much, lie in it for a while then go back to bed. Rinse and repeat (literally) until you drop off.

This works.

Once stayed in a hotel, windows barely opened and there was no air con. The heat was unbelievable. We survived- cold wet towels and jumped in for a cold shower every time it got too warm.

It’s one/two days. People talking about not going to work, seriously?

Bet they’ll still expect their local shop to be open, though. Fully stocked, of course. They’ll expect the farmers to be in the fields tending to livestock. And the hospital/emergency services to be fully operational.

Everyone can’t just sit at home because it’s hot two days.

Justinkase · 14/07/2022 23:43

I’m in the south east. This is the current forecast for my area next week. 38 bloody eight degrees ffs! Seriously considering not sending my children in to school Monday and Tuesday more for the fact we have a 30 min walk to and from school. Which I would also have to drag a 2 year old with me on! They break up Wednesday anyway.

To think people don’t seem to understand how hot it is predicted to be next week?
TruthHertz · 14/07/2022 23:45

I've got to drive a truck all next week and the a/c gas ran out today, with next available slot to regas it being a week saturday. I'll be wearing heavy work trousers due to site regs and it'll likely be hotter in cab than outside. I'm still seemingly less worried than many others. Hydration and take it steady is pretty much it.

blackheartsgirl · 14/07/2022 23:48

I’m going to working in a tiny factory with machines going all day. I’m loading trays of parts into hot ovens on and off all day. Work have said carry on as normal, no allowances made. It’s going to 35 degrees mon and tues in northwales/ chester

not going to be enjoying it!

SouperNoodle · 14/07/2022 23:57

I'm going to keep my dd's off nursery on the Tuesday as it gets quite hot in there anyway without it being over 30 degrees. I've also just bought oscillating fans to put in their bedrooms.
We're going to have a quiet couple of days inside.
I'd put the paddling pool up but there's no shade in our garden.

Middledazedted · 14/07/2022 23:59

I teach. My badly designed room tends to track 8 degrees above the temp. We have already hit 34 so next week would see us over 40 degrees!

Crinklecuts · 15/07/2022 00:00

MyrrAgain · 14/07/2022 17:28

Disgustingly hot. I'm not even sure the kids should go to school and I should go to work

@MyrrAgain

sarcastic I hope?

No wonder the economy is the way it is

etulosba · 15/07/2022 00:00

Eh? Most modern air conditioning systems are heat pumps which do not produce any harmful emissions.

They don’t themselves, but they do indirectly. They are usually powered by electricity. Most of the electricity in the world is generated by burning fossil fuels.

QueSyrahSyrah · 15/07/2022 00:02

Have you got a clothes horse or a couple of garden chairs and an old sheet @SouperNoodle? Create shade where there was none before Smile

SpiderVersed · 15/07/2022 00:02

I’ve been in Southern European for the last 10 days and it’s been between 35-40°C.

That has been easily bearable because the house is built to maximise breezes and shade. Full length retractable shades that still allow all air to circulate, fan systems, awnings.
Not to mention a pool for when it’s too much.

Our home in the North West is unbearable at 10°C lower.

I’ve been in Minnesota in January and coped better than the U.K. It’s all about the infrastructure.

Spaghetti0 · 15/07/2022 00:08

Ignore the weather at the top as that tells you what it is now (at night).
Look at the temps daily.
yes, some people in these countries have aircon/houses built for heat/siestas. But lots don’t. Lots don’t have electricity etc.

i can’t imagine how difficult it must be.
im not looking forward to next week. But makes me realise how comfortable I am practically all year round.

PeloAddict · 15/07/2022 00:11

I'm just a bit.. meh over it. It's going to be hot, I don't cope well in heat
But work will expect me to work, and I can't sleep with the windows open (ground floor) so I'm kind of just going with ah well it will be grim but it's 2 days

Mamanyt · 15/07/2022 00:20

Point of fact...when you live with extreme temperatures year round, all year, every year forEVER, those temperatures are "normal" for you and your body adjusts. It is a very different thing when it is sporadic.

However, ALL of us will have to get used to very hot temperatures now, and they will get worse. In British Columbia, there is a real issue with fruit cooking ON THE TREES as it ripens.

IDreamOfTheMoors · 15/07/2022 00:36

Going to be 42 tomorrow (Saturday) in California where I live. And above 38 every day for the foreseeable future.
It’s just HOT. They have cooling centers here for people who don’t have A/C or can’t afford it.
And every year, seniors die because their bodies can’t regulate the heat and they suffer from heat stroke. Very sad. I went to visit my mum once when it was this hot and she had the heat going. I had to scold her into turning on the A/C.
I look forward to the winter when maybe it’ll get down to 5. If we’re lucky.

Pinklimey · 15/07/2022 00:42

I don't care. I will deal with it if and when it happens. I am due to go camping, so it will probably actually be about three degrees and pissing it down. You are welcome.

CorvusPurpureus · 15/07/2022 00:44

I live in the ME. My house has marble floors, double height ceilings, & shutters on all windows.

We generally hit 40 degrees plus & it is fine. I actually ban my dc from using the air conditioning, because it's expensive & an environmental nightmare. We dunk ourselves in the pool, live in sweaty shorts & vests...it's all good.

Currently I am visiting my parents in the UK. Their house is surrounded on all sides. It is carpeted throughout. The windows don't have shutters. Last time I checked, their nice 4 bedroom detached property did not have multiple balconies to allow for sleeping under the stars on hot nights. Everyone is sweltering.

The UK is very definitely not ready yet for this sort of temperature becoming routine. My instinct is that new builds will be looking towards mediterraean & ME models, because this is, honestly, what summers will look like in a few years' time.

Meanwhile, I can recommend wringing a tshirt out under the cold tap to wear to bed! & if you can, siesta then pick up work when it's cooler.

HRTQueen · 15/07/2022 00:50

Mad dogs and Englishman go out in the mid day sun

can't remember the rest of the song but we have a no fuss should be made attitude that makes our lives more difficult

We should adapt to those few days

I feel for those having to use public transport

ive loved in countries where it’s 40+ for weeks it’s very quiet in the afternoon the heat is so intense you don’t want to be out

antelopevalley · 15/07/2022 01:04

We do not get very hot days often enough to design our houses for heat. In the same way Australians complain when they have a spell of very cold weather as their houses are not designed for cold.

GoingOnce · 15/07/2022 01:07

2 days. 2 days!!! It’s not even that unusual anymore is it? I’m sure summer 2017/18/19 we had peaks of mid 30s (where I am in the south anyway).

It will pass.

Aussiegirl123456 · 15/07/2022 01:14

The weather patterns are insane across the world.
I am currently freezing (winter here in Aus). It’s never been this cold 9°C this morning though we get around 21° throughout the day. I’m longing for 38° to come back! All I can say to all you poor souls struggling in the heat is cold showers, cold drinks and fans work wonders. Please check on your vulnerable neighbours too. Hope it cools soon.

Kant · 15/07/2022 01:56

Whenever I feel a gentle whine about the heat coming on, I think about people doing jobs like yours. People in homes, offices, classrooms, etc. have it easy compared with people working around heat-producing machines, ovens and so on.

I toured a steel works once. I'll never complain about being hot at work again.

BritWifeInUSA · 15/07/2022 01:58

I don’t know why you used Miami for comparison. It’s nowhere near the warmest place in the US. Palm Springs will be 47 Celsius next week. And they have months and months of those temperatures, not a few days. Yes, there is air conditioning but it’s still incredibly hot.

Even where I live it’s regularly warmer than the UK. And not everywhere in my part of the county is air-conditioned.
