@MoveBitch but audis and garden bars aren't classy, that's the point. It's the "Burberry effect". When something once deemed expensive and classy now becomes representative of the lower classes.

Using the word 'classy' is a bit non-u isn't it.

SarahSissions · 13/07/2022 11:46

Rishi Sunack wouldn’t be friends with someone with a bar in their garden

palygold · 13/07/2022 11:48

To be fair, it is also absolutely fine to sneer at the "higher classes" too. Posters seem to find that totally acceptable.

But as much, or along similar lines, though. Then there's the aspiration to be part of the middle/upper classes.

palygold · 13/07/2022 11:49

Not as much, I should have said.

Then I'm buying one right now!

It is as much, yes.

ArchieStar · 13/07/2022 11:53

For me it’s no different to having an alcohol cabinet, just one is indoors and one is outdoors.

palygold · 13/07/2022 11:54

I disagree, and I say that having spent some time on the long running 'class' threads, recently and over the years.

There is some sneering at upper and middle classes, but alongside that you have the aspiration to be part of those classes. Not so much in reverse.

Sally090807 · 13/07/2022 11:58

If it gives people pleasure and it’s in their garden then it’s none of your business, wind your neck and stop being such a snob.

NancyJoan · 13/07/2022 12:05

Mybumlooksbig · 12/07/2022 22:31

I am a total snob, sorry.
I have v fun and wild parties without a bar.
Scrolled through Drainbook earlier and there seemed to be ALOT of people showing their home bars off , maybe I'm bitter because I'm sat drinking my white wine on the sofa.....

Get better friends. I don't know a single soul with one.

Tabitha005 · 13/07/2022 12:06

I wouldn't have one because I think they're pointless and a bit tacky, but I don't begrudge anyone else wanting one in their own garden.

They're a bit like kitchen islands, bi-fold doors, garden cabins and anything else that's in vogue. I see a LOT of used garden bars for sale on my local Facebook marketplace, so maybe they're gently sliding OUT of vogue for quite a few people now.

Anyone who sneers at upper and middle classes just gets told they are jealous and it is the politics of envy.
It does not happen that much on MN. Sneering at "common" people is everyday sport on MN.

Yes horrible. Normally erected at the farthest point from owner's house closer to a neighbour. They, along with hot tubs and the, really should be outlawed, 'garden cinemas' can get in the bin. 🗑 gonna need a bigger bin...

pictish · 13/07/2022 12:26

Must admit, the garden cinema posts on fb make me feel sorry for the neighbours.
Shots of the gathered red-faced football shirts, the lager and cocktails and the match on the garden cinema, with the neighbour’s house and garden less than 10 feet away. Fine as an occasional thing but they never are.
Also, films by fairylights at 10pm. Living your best life? Hope the neighbours are enjoying your choice of viewing. If not, who cares? Making memories!

Surlybassey · 13/07/2022 12:28

Personally I’m a total snob about people who say ALOT. Particularly ones who hold themselves up as paragons of style and taste 🙄.

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 12:30

I like the garden tiki bars. Some are quite stylish.
I'd like one but haven't the room for one or that many people to invite round really , so not to be

What about fire pits and outdoor pizza ovens? They stink therefore they are antisocial. Should they be banned too? Or are they ok because they're middle class?

ancientgran · 13/07/2022 12:32

I've never actually seen on in real life, just on TV. I'm not bothered about other people's gardens unless they make alot of noise. Actually I'm not really bothered about my garden.

BringMeTea · 13/07/2022 12:34

Fire pits are wank too, ambivalent about pizza ovens. hth.

Must confess to being an outright hypocrite. I love a fire pit. We’ve got one but it’s not fancy…just a ring of stones on the ground. We don’t build a fire very often but fortunately it’s ok when we do…we have fire building neighbours, garden party neighbours, barking dog neighbours, barbecue neighbours…we all manage to live and let live because we’re all pretty considerate.

It offends me more that you write a lot as one word 🤷‍♀️

Maybe I am just a spelling and grammar snob though.

We have a fantastic bar in our garden - built during the boring months of lockdown partly to give work to family members who are carpenters something fun to do and partly for the teenagers who's friends love it and think ours is a great party house. We are lucky enough to have a very large, very nice garden and having different seating areas is a good way of using the space.
I'm actually not a drinker of booze but sitting with a nice cold drink on these warm evenings with all the fairy lights on makes you feel like you're on holiday.

We do things because we want to do it and think it's a good idea for us as a family - not because it's "in vogue" 🙄

Luckily we don't have close neighbours so can have a raucous, chavvy old time in it! The only problem with it is that people always want to know when our next party is!

I would assume anyone who thought it was a bad thing to be a very dull person and not someone I'd want to socialise with anyway!

ihavenocats · 13/07/2022 12:52

I feel this way about trampolines. They are everywhere, in front gardens too. I never consented to living in a big open trampoline park.

Bars are usually int he back where I can't see, and if I'm close enough to see it I'm close enough to drink in it so bars are all good with me.

Lose the trampolines though for crying out loud.

pictish · 13/07/2022 12:59

Remember a trampoline post where the trampoline was erected beside the fence and OP was sick to death of the neighbouring kids’ heads bobbing up incessantly and staring over into their garden. Was such a silly thing but exactly the sort of annoyance that would piss me right off.
Thankfully no trampolines here. We had one when the kids were wee but it was positioned away in a secluded end of the garden with no immediate neighbours. As it happens, all three hurt themselves in one way or another on the bloody thing. They lost interest and we got rid.
