As the title says.

We will have a new PM and the decision on who it is will ultimately reside with CP members.

I would rather this wasn't a political thread in the sense of Conservative/Labour/LidDem/Green etc.

I'm simply very interested to understand the direction of travel here for party members and would ask that people posting respect that and don't pounce on party members who post.

For reference I'm not a party member, but my uncle is and in his constituency he's saying it's a run off between Sunak, Mordant and Badenoch in terms of local support.

Truss

Fillet · 13/07/2022 16:05

The Tory party doesn't know what it wants to be anymore. There's the Ultra-Right, anti-intellect, Brexit, anti-culture, shout-loudest lot, and moderate, compassionate, responsible Tories, who must be wondering what the fuck has happened to their party.

My in-laws have voted Tory their whole lives, but Brexit, BJ, and now the general direction of this leadership election has finished them off as Tory voters.

Blossomtoes · 13/07/2022 16:06

I don't think there's any coming back from that despite her back tracking

I don’t think many of the 200,000 care. It won’t affect her chances with them and she’s currently their favourite by a country mile.

Provenceinthesummer · 13/07/2022 16:13

I would have chosen a trustworthy unity option if there had been one, Ben Wallace maybe would have provided this as I don’t like the relentless bitter division. I may be alone in this though, so many brexiteers felt utterly betrayed by Theresa May and Phillip Hammond and learnt that we couldn’t trust remainers to deliver - they would water it down nothing. A lot of damage to trust was done during that time that may never be undone.

I am paying attention to Labour remainers backing Kemi - is that purely women’s rights? I wouldn’t rule out getting behind someone that can at least attempt a stab at unifying the country - we need a fiscal focused and sharp mind that has a grip on the economy - I just can’t get behind Rishi sadly

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 16:24

The majority of the lucky ones who can actually vote again won't really care about women's rights or gender Id ( is my own guess )
If we do get PM at least it will show that it's all been lip service anyway. Which is what people have been saying to those who go ' the tories know what a women is' argument for not voting any other party all these times!
I wonder what percentage of the faithful are women ? Must be a fair few.

hoping2021 · 13/07/2022 16:27

It's funny that media went after Rishi for having a wife with Indian Citizenship and a green card, but don't care that Tugendhat is a French citizen with a French wife working for the French Embassy.

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 16:30

I'm surprised that Tom T smokes considering his ex army , they are usually into fitness and I had him down as a cyclist too. Looks the type

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 16:33

Wait until the Daily mail finds out his a French citizen! ( well, they probably do know to be fair )

SleeplessInEngland · 13/07/2022 16:37

Truss has said her government would borrow money to fund tax cuts.

My in-laws have voted Tory their whole lives, but Brexit, BJ, and now the general direction of this leadership election has finished them off as Tory voters.

Not sure there are many of the compassionate, more moderate lot left anymore. Johnson booted them for saying that Parliament should be able to scrutinise the very Brexit bill that he's now trying to tear up.
These leadership elections are a case in point - they are falling over themselves to appeal to the very rightwing Conservative Associations - so they all back Rwanda and they are all for tearing up the NI agreement, even though they all voted in favour of it. They've sat next to Johnson supporting him through scandal after scandal. They are all complicit. If it was a general election we'd get promises about investing in hospitals and schools instead of threats to cut the funding.
My only hope is that they will continue to tear themselves apart and the UK people eventually vote them out in a couple of years. They are the very worst of the British people , in my view.

Princessoftheuniverse · 13/07/2022 16:40

Totally uninspiring bunch. At least we’ll be spared. Priti Patel. Suppose if anyone Tom Tugenbhart as he’s the least offensive.
Not a member.

brianixon · 13/07/2022 16:43

Somehow I made a mistake in copying the odds from Betfair Very Sorry all.
To make the final 2
Rishi 2/9

Mordaunt 3/10
Liz Truss 15/8
Tugendhat 7/1 Very unlikely
Kemi 8/1 No chance
These are the only ones attracting money and I guess it is mainly Journalists and MPs and a few Civil Service who are betting. They are very close to the action.

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 16:44

Tom seems a bit ' tug your forelock ' to me
Like Penny , when they have served in the forces they become very arrogant and everyone else is wrong ( dh is ex military too, it's the training )
Nit knocking it, but it might come across like that

HotHeatDays · 13/07/2022 16:49

They are very close to the action.

They are but are often wrong over this sort of stuff. Tories often go for the least expected in these races. History of these in the past prove it.

Need to give it another round or two and see who 'swaps sides' and who those who have dropped out and their following, fall behind.

SleeplessInEngland · 13/07/2022 17:04

New Results out:

Kemi Badenoch 40
Suella Braverman 32
Penny Mordaunt 67
Rishi Sunak 88
Liz Truss 50

Tom Tugendhat 37

OUT:
Jeremy Hunt 18
Nadhim Zahawi 25

Blossomtoes · 13/07/2022 17:09

The Tory member in the corner of this room reckons the final two will be Sunak and Mordaunt. If so, he’s going Mordaunt.

JemimaPuddleducksWaddle · 13/07/2022 17:12

Will be interesting who shifts and moves over the next round.

BBC saying Hunt supporters are likely to go Tugendhat and Zahawi ones could go to two or three of the more centralist candidates.

Absolutely.

I'm also interested in where Suella will go next.

I can't see her surviving the next round. I wonder if she'll opt out now and plug Kemi to keep her in the contest.

Also interested in how team Rishi are going to deal with Penny (and the rest of the party).

They will not want her in the final two. It will be interesting if they coalesce behind someone else to try and force Penny out.

Thank you for the update re riders

I blame Labour. The worst thing about the infighting is the fact that the party know they can indulge in this frivolity exactly because they know how desperately weak labour are. They could vote in Kermit the frog and he would probably win. The dire state of politics in this country is the most considerable factor here

SleeplessInEngland · 13/07/2022 17:24

I’d say “polling shows this is categorically horseshit” but we all know you’re just trolling so I won’t bother.

The membership will go nuclear if they do.

Maybe but nothing they could do about it.

Ultimately it looks from membership polling that Penny is the one to beat and to do that they need to cut her out of the race.

Whether they'll succeed is a different matter but I don't doubt that all the candidates will be discussing an anti Mordant strategy.

That politics....

As will the press, I feel. The Mail and the Telegraph seem to be most interested in Mordaunt and Badenoch.

Blossomtoes · 13/07/2022 17:36

Maybe but nothing they could do about it

Except show equal contempt in return by resigning the party, perhaps? That would be interesting.

True, but unlikely I think 🤔.

Then again I'm not a member so could be way off beam on that.

Interesting question for members though on perceptions of blocking Penny from the final two....
