As the title says.

We will have a new PM and the decision on who it is will ultimately reside with CP members.

I would rather this wasn't a political thread in the sense of Conservative/Labour/LidDem/Green etc.

I'm simply very interested to understand the direction of travel here for party members and would ask that people posting respect that and don't pounce on party members who post.

For reference I'm not a party member, but my uncle is and in his constituency he's saying it's a run off between Sunak, Mordant and Badenoch in terms of local support.

Down right liar ! The tories love them don't they
Truth twisters all of them

BotCrossHuns · 13/07/2022 14:43

Have any of the leadership candidates suggested that they would call a general election relatively early?

SleeplessInEngland · 13/07/2022 14:50

Suella Braverman, the moron's moron, is now redirecting her website to Mordaunt's, indicating she's about to pull out and support her.

That's an interesting question. I would imagine it doesn't play terribly well with the party membership to talk about an election right now. And whoever wins will be working with a comfortable 70-odd seat majority (whatever's left of Boris's 80) and two and a half years before they absolutely have to go to the country.

That said, newly installed leaders do tend to prefer their own mandate. For every Theresa May (pissing away a half-decent majority by accident) there's a Cameron (winning an unexpected one second time around).

Somewhat outdated language there …. Maybe try and find another word to express your sense of intellectual superiority over your fellow humans??

deliciouschilli · 13/07/2022 14:57

Penny Mourdaunt did not want the words "Woman" or "Mother" included in her maternity legislation. I don't think there's any coming back from that despite her back tracking. She would be a liability.

Oh, we're doing the smelling salts routine about a very common word are we?

As you wish. Replace it with 'ninnyhammer' or 'mumpsimus' instead.

I can see how the lying is an issue. The problem political parties have is the internal politics, what makes them electable to party members maybe not do so well come a GE.

I am member and so is DH. We won't vote for Sunak who is backstabber or Maudant who does not know what a women is. Nor Hunt we saw what he did to NHS and can't forgive. Tom not pro Brexit so rules him out.

Most likely vote for Suella to get out of European court or Kemi who knows what a women is and won't tolerate woke shit.

We would vote for Truss if Suella or Kemi not on final Ballot.

Our 2 sons probably vote similarly based on discussions we have had at home and their comments.

Can I ask your views on what Kemi proposes to damage children's education and what Suella proposes to damage those dependent on welfare state.

Is your priority woke shit over the furniture economic generation of this country getting a good balanced childhood?

Fillet · 13/07/2022 15:17

It's fascinating to hear Tory members picks v Actual Tory Voters picks (as in, the people in rl, I hear talking about it every day).

There is a gulf between them. Literally not one person I've heard on this in rl wants the candidates being fawned over here.

The popular names on this thread are the exact ones that Tory voters in the street cannot stand. Interesting, as far as it goes. I mean, bloody awful for the country, but we're used to that.

Jesus. What has the Tory party become? Extremist right wing views will tear the Tory party apart.

Compassionate, intelligent, experienced and capable Conservatives politicians cannot go on being tarred with this kind of thing.

war I do expect to hear more on policy in the coming weeks from the two contenders. Most are not prepared for this to happen so quickly - so I understand they might need time to put together their campaigns, the only one ready and waiting as he created this debacle is Rishi - he had been planning this for a very long time with a ready to roll video.
We have a month to go, and I am not interested in hearing everyone’s views on everything! What would be the point?! I am waiting on the last two and then investigate each one thoroughly.
I think we might be in for a surprise perhaps but not Tom. Absolutely no one wants that remain brute in office

The only concern I have about waiting for the final 2 before expecting these answers is those who could and would have done better could be gone.

We need to know before we get rid of decent candidates. Not after.

humancalculator · 13/07/2022 15:25

Not a member. Not even in the UK. Know I'm not supposed to drag this into politics. But really, what a bunch. Do you want to keep dragging the UK into a situation where its relations with its nearest trading partners are poisoned, and its less-advantaged populations have to struggle even more, or not? Oops. Sorry. Dragged policy into it. Anyway. Tugendhat is literally the only decent, thoughtful accomplished human among them.

DuchessofAnkh77 · 13/07/2022 15:30

Party member.

really hard to tell at this stage who the last two will be....

Don't forget it could all be decided today, depending on how the voting goes...(although I don't think it will!)

Depending on who drops out will determine who is in the last two.

I'd make a different call depending on who was remaining.

Rishi Vs Penny - Rishi
Rishi Vs Truss - Truss
Rishi Vs Kemi - probably Kemi
Rishi vs Hunt - Rishi
etc etc etc

It'll start becoming clearer when they get down to 4. You can't choose until you get to two as it depends which two!

PennyMordor · 13/07/2022 15:41

I think the Conservatives (I’m not one) will rue the day if they pick Mordaunt.

Too big a track record of lying. Over women’s rights and children’s safeguarding, she’ll split the Party.

Good for Labour.

She's definitely a liar (she's was also doubling down on shit about Turkey joining the EU yesterday) but as we've seen the party doesn't really care about liars.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 13/07/2022 15:45

ITV News (Anushka Asthana) seems to be intimating — if not outright saying — that Hunt is out.

Yet funnily enough as this thread shows they do.

Do you actually know anything about him?

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 15:47

Hunt is out ! Yay
He was so smug on sunday
' I made it big , so can you ' attitude , me me me
Nice dog though.

Well it's not confirmed yet so maybe not. It seems to be hints and musings, although it's coming from the Sun as well as ITV. I do think he's struggled this time round though.

Yes, lovely dog.

They are guessing probably through what MPs are saying. One thing Graham Brady doesn't do is leak stuff.

Beowulfa · 13/07/2022 15:50

The shortlist of 8 for running the UK only contains 2 white males. That is in itself cheering, even if you're not a Tory.

Surely Mordaunt can't get away with denying what she said in Parliament (removing woman/mother from maternity leave legislation) if it's in Hansard? Johnson had the charisma/bullish swagger to pull off serial lying (up to a point), but none of this lot have been on HIGNFY cheerfully taking the piss out of themselves.

I'm not, nor ever have been, a member of any political party.

SleeplessInEngland · 13/07/2022 15:57

If Sunak does make it to the last two expect he'll do a lot more anti-EU headbanging. He actually was a Leaver but members clearly don't think so.

brianixon · 13/07/2022 16:02

I guess the MPs already know what each of the contenders stands for at this stage. The Betting is strange Betfair

To get to last 2
Rishi Sunak 3/10 Penny Mordaunt 15/8 Liz Truss 7/1
Tom Tugendhat 8/1 Kemi Badenoch 4/1 Jeremy Hunt 25/1

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 16:03

Jeremy Hunts dog was lovely !
Sunak is anti the EU because he wants more trade deals with India and have their people come over to do IT and those kind of high profile jobs.
This is only what I think however ( plus current PM went there only a few months ago too and someone said this on lbc too, which made me think )
I've no idea , but now we have lost our closest trading partners it sort of makes a bit of sense anyway
