As the title says.

We will have a new PM and the decision on who it is will ultimately reside with CP members.

I would rather this wasn't a political thread in the sense of Conservative/Labour/LidDem/Green etc.

I'm simply very interested to understand the direction of travel here for party members and would ask that people posting respect that and don't pounce on party members who post.

For reference I'm not a party member, but my uncle is and in his constituency he's saying it's a run off between Sunak, Mordant and Badenoch in terms of local support.

Interesting question for members though on perceptions of blocking Penny from the final two....
What are the reasons for her becoming so prominent so suddenly; a modern woman?
What have her Policies been to date that takes her from a bit of a campaigner on Wokeism to "International Stateswoman"?
I had only heard of her because relatives in her constituency.

Sunak has just tweeted a poll showing that, of all the current contenders, he's the only one the public think would be a better PM more than Starmer (albeit by a single point).

Whether that's true or not, it once again shows how stark the divide is between party members and the general public.

Part of it will be about exposure though. Some of the candidates are currently unknowns in the eyes of the public.

Eskarina1 · 13/07/2022 18:12

I'm not a Tory voter but fascinated by the idea that Kemi Badenoch is a nightmare candidate for the left. I float labour/lib dem/green so I'm torn between wanting the Tories to elect a hard right candidate who can leave the centre to other parties (because we elect parties in the centre) or a candidate who will do minimal damage in the next 2 years. Kemi, who's declared a war on rights and doesn't believe systematic racism exists is definitely the front runner in the former category for me.

This, absolutely this. I'm happy to watch the Tory members vote in a leader that the voting public will feel very differently about.

Some of the candidates are currently unknowns in the eyes of the public

Why on earth are they even in the running to be PM then? Where is the test of their character? Their moral compass? Their effectiveness? Their leadership? Voted Brexit and Says Stuff We Like to Hear appears to be all that qualifies these candidates.

Is it really too much to ask that the Tory Party digs deep for a candidate that represents intelligent, considered, inclusive, moral, compassionate leadership?

Oh no wait. There is literally no one that fits that bill left in the party, after BJ sacked them all. Ben Wallace came close, but even he couldn't stomach this leadership farce.

Quite. The power of an echo chamber.

I'm pretty sure Kier Starmer would welcome a Badenoch win.

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 18:24

Kemi Badenoch MP appeals to the daily Mail types because she will say all the things they like to hear , they will like her anti everything take on woke , the EU, teachers , tax cuts and free speech. She's tapped into what they want to hear.
At least Rich! Sunak has an idea about how the economy is going realistically and not advocating tax cuts yet. The Mail readers are not keen on him.

MarshaBradyo · 13/07/2022 18:31

Not sure there are many posts answering your question op but I’m interested to know re who people want. I guess it’s waiting time to find out

Agree. And it's clear from this thread - and common sense probably - that Tory Party members will be DM types. So they think all Tories think like them.

Problem is, they don't. Badenoch is repellent to Tory voters in my family, and their set. They're old style Tories. They hated Brexit and they hate the attack on culture/the woke wars.

If they're not wooed by the Lib Dems, they might vote for Rishi, but never an Ultra.

So yep. Fingers crossed for Kemi.

She seems to have woken up / amended her views. DP (a more hardline member than me) thinks her former stance was more of a legal fact (TWAW legally if they go through GRC) rather than a belief that one can change sex

Leopards don't change their spots. Certainly not overnight at such a convenient moment. She tried hard to exclude the word "woman" from the maternity bill, then lied about it the other day.

Even if she has changed, I don't just want someone who won't push for self ID, but let the status quo stand. No, I want someone who will proactively push back and get males out of women's prisons/hospital bays/school changing rooms.

I also want "gender neutral" toilets and changing rooms in public buildings to be an optional third space in addition to separate male/female facilities (separated by sex, not gender), not the only option so that girls get infections because they are avoiding using them. Where they do exist, they should be properly constructed, not lazy rebadging of the urinals.

I also want governments to stop handing over substantial sums of money to lobby groups (not just Stonewall, charities in general should depend upon the goodwill of the public rather than getting involved in politics, the Kids Company saga was appalling).

I don't trust PM to deliver on that. KB on the other hand gets it.

Gosh. What incredibly fortuitous timing.

To take one particular topic, there are plenty of previous Labour voters who think that Labour's attitude to women's rights makes it difficult to vote for them at the moment. If the Conservative leader offers a different policy then those voters will vote Conservative. If on the other hand the new leader just offers a very similar policy to Labour then those voters will either keep voting Labour, or abstain.

Replicate that for many different issues. It neuters the "no point voting because they're all the same" argument and gets some people off of the fence. Those who disagree wouldn't have voted Conservative anyway so they're no loss. I think the phrase is "putting clear blue water between the Conservatives and Labour", there's no point in trying to out-Labour Labour is there?

The worst thing about the infighting is the fact that the party know they can indulge in this frivolity exactly because they know how desperately weak labour are.

I’d say “polling shows this is categorically horseshit” but we all know you’re just trolling so I won’t bother.

Bloody cheek! I am probably the only genuine conservative member on here. I imagine you are not voting anytime soon…. So perhaps go elsewhere?

Provenceinthesummer · 13/07/2022 19:07

All of this shameless stereotyping. I have never purchased the Daily Mail 😂

Why would the other posters on here who say they’re party members lie? It’s not exactly something to brag about.

Blossomtoes · 13/07/2022 19:10

Very true. I’m kind of embarrassed to be married to one.

Maybe a few. I'm aware it's a view rattling around the Tory echo chamber.

Labour's stance on women right now is problematic. However the Tory party are a collective force for a race-to-the-bottom, hard-Right, immoral, dehumanising callous future for all but a few.

The Tory are no friend of women. They've shown that hand time and and time again.

Nothing on earth could drag a Tory vote out of me.

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 19:11

The Labour Party are just watching the tories from the sidelines as it's all about them again
As it was three years ago and three years before that too etc.
It's a clever tactic really and it means they stay relevant. Taking weeks to find a replacement is bad , if this was the LP that would be spitting feathers by now.
Yet we all sit back and let them carry on whilst all the actual problems we are facing in this country are on the back burners ( again)
I'm beginning to think it's just their form of procrastination myself to stay in power and line their pockets a bit more

It’s lasted 22 years and counting so please don’t worry about us, we’re fine. His term of endearment for me is Commie Pinko Slimeball - it amuses both of us.

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 19:23

Blossom !
I'm married to a conservative voter as well.
He is nice and small c in his views , but I blame his old employer who had loads of with them his working class parents , the sort Richi wouldn't meet or hang out with in a million years ! Some people just like their values and what they stand for I suppose and don't trust the LP.
We agree to disagree on politics , but I am much more interested in it than he is.

Go on. Tell us your name for him Grin

HellToupee · 13/07/2022 19:24

When Penny said “a woman like me doesn’t have one” in reference to Thatcher’s quote about Willy, did seriously no one think to ask her “you say a woman like you. Are there any women that do?”.

The way I heard that statement it said “a cis (🤮) woman like me doesn’t have one but a different kind of woman may”.

then again, maybe that’s just me.
