As the title says.

We will have a new PM and the decision on who it is will ultimately reside with CP members.

I would rather this wasn't a political thread in the sense of Conservative/Labour/LidDem/Green etc.

I'm simply very interested to understand the direction of travel here for party members and would ask that people posting respect that and don't pounce on party members who post.

For reference I'm not a party member, but my uncle is and in his constituency he's saying it's a run off between Sunak, Mordant and Badenoch in terms of local support.

Member here and will vote for Kemi Badenoch or TT.

PMQs happening. Johnson being an utter bore as usual, seemingly oblivious at why he was fired at all. He indicates this might be his last PMQs even though he'll still be PM for a few weeks.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 13/07/2022 12:39

I think the summer recess starts soon, they they will all be on holiday.

ilovesooty · 13/07/2022 12:41

I'm a Labour Party member.

Still interested in what Conservative party members have to say.

WarOnSlugs · 13/07/2022 12:43

Same @ilovesooty, interested in their views. I wish some would answer my question about why the serious policy issues aren't being asked of the candidates.

SleeplessInEngland · 13/07/2022 12:47

Sunak has just tweeted a poll showing that, of all the current contenders, he's the only one the public think would be a better PM more than Starmer (albeit by a single point).

Whether that's true or not, it once again shows how stark the divide is between party members and the general public.

Another PMQs is scheduled for next week, and of course Johnson could still be PM when they start again in early September.

HannahSternDefoe · 13/07/2022 12:52

Penny Mordaunt.

Provenceinthesummer · 13/07/2022 12:59

war I do expect to hear more on policy in the coming weeks from the two contenders. Most are not prepared for this to happen so quickly - so I understand they might need time to put together their campaigns, the only one ready and waiting as he created this debacle is Rishi - he had been planning this for a very long time with a ready to roll video.
We have a month to go, and I am not interested in hearing everyone’s views on everything! What would be the point?! I am waiting on the last two and then investigate each one thoroughly.
I think we might be in for a surprise perhaps but not Tom. Absolutely no one wants that remain brute in office

Thanks for answering. I guess I just can't understand how you can form a preference without knowing where they stand on the key issues facing the country. But take your point that it's a moot point for members to have a preference yet as they will only get two candidates to pick from.

I'm trying to read this thread to get inside the heads of Tory votes and members, because in theory, that should be a useful exercise.

In practice, it's chilling. How anyone can be considering voting for some of these people is politically, emotionally and intellectually beyond me.

BJ has purged that party of any decent politicians. These individuals are utterly ill-equipped to be anywhere near the office of PM.

It's a race to the bottom. The office has become completely devalued under BJ and now this. It's like we've all forgotten what a fully-rounded, qualified, experienced, moral, compassionate politician even looks like.

Ben Wallace was the closest thing to that.

XingMing · 13/07/2022 13:36

Not a member, but if I were my vote would be for Tom Tugendhat. I also like Kemi Badenoch. Even if neither is successful in the race, I would like to see both given prominent jobs afterwards, with Ben Wallace staying at Defence.

deliciouschilli · 13/07/2022 13:38

Not a member but hoping it's not Penny Mordaunt due to her stance on Women. She would alienate a lot of voters.

ThrillAdder · 13/07/2022 13:38

Married to a party member - Sunak gets his vote. It's taxes for us - while we belong to a group that would benefit from tax cuts - we also believe that econ.discipline is the way to go and spread the burden rather than face massive deficit in 2.5y.

SleeplessInEngland · 13/07/2022 13:39

Brand new YouGov member polling show Mourdant easily beats everyone in head to heads.

SarahSissions · 13/07/2022 13:39

I am a party member and I’d like to see tughenhat and truss and the. I’d vote truss. I don’t think that is the likeliest outcome though

SleeplessInEngland · 13/07/2022 13:49

Some people on twitter seem to be baffled by Mordaunt's popularity, saying people barely know anything about her. But I suspect that's exactly why members like her: pro-brexit but otherwsie a blank canvas they can paint all their hopes on. Her speech today was also the usual 'thinks were better in the past' which seems to make members hard/wet.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 13/07/2022 13:50

I'm surprised to see the support for Badenoch, given her behaviour and lack of integrity in the past. Mind you, people voted for Boris, so I really shouldn't be...

I think Penny precisely because of her stance (today) on women.
She will garner much support (key marginal for a GE)

marcellen · 13/07/2022 14:24

This. Although I'd ask how anyone can be considering voting for ANY of these people.

roarfeckingroarr · 13/07/2022 14:25

Party member

Kemi and Penny Mordaunt.

No way to tax raising Rishi.

roarfeckingroarr · 13/07/2022 14:26

Scautish · 12/07/2022 21:01

@ofwarren

you support a candidate who says the UK spends too much on welfare???

i want the candidate who is least likely to include Rees-Mogg, Dorries and Truss in their cabinet. All three are the epitome of evil who would see the weakest in society rot. Same goes for Priti Patel but at least she’s withdrawn.

We do

She seems to have woken up / amended her views. DP (a more hardline member than me) thinks her former stance was more of a legal fact (TWAW legally if they go through GRC) rather than a belief that one can change sex

Translation: she's just done a 180 for political expediency. Who knows what she actually believes. Johnson's successor in more ways than one.
