As the title says.

We will have a new PM and the decision on who it is will ultimately reside with CP members.

I would rather this wasn't a political thread in the sense of Conservative/Labour/LidDem/Green etc.

I'm simply very interested to understand the direction of travel here for party members and would ask that people posting respect that and don't pounce on party members who post.

For reference I'm not a party member, but my uncle is and in his constituency he's saying it's a run off between Sunak, Mordant and Badenoch in terms of local support.

When Penny said “a woman like me doesn’t have one” in reference to Thatcher’s quote about Willy, did seriously no one think to ask her “you say a woman like you. Are there any women that do?”.

The way I heard that statement it said “a cis (🤮) woman like me doesn’t have one but a different kind of woman may”.

then again, maybe that’s just me.

I read it that way also....

I'm finding a lot of her statements on this very "slippery" - enabling people to interpret them as they wish without her actually nailing her colours to the mast.

More lefties on here than conservatives as predicted enjoying silly injokes and reducing the thread to ashes.

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 19:27

My dh is a typical ' tories are better with the economy' type.
Penny won't 'nail her colours ', especially now.
More backtracking on her original views

Someone mentioned echo chamber below I think any thread on mn gets rounded on now

Fillet · 13/07/2022 19:30

Some people just like their values and what they stand for I suppose

My in laws were this type of life-long conservative and it's been a kind of traumatic process for them to lose their political identity.

It was a brutal wake up to realise that the Tories have morphed into something that doesn't represent them at all. They don't hate asylum seekers. They didn't hate the EU. They don't hate the poor. They don't hate culture, intellect and science.

The lurch to the right has shaken off a number of Tory voters. The LD are doing well out of that.

Blossom !
I'm married to a conservative voter as well.
He is nice and small c in his views , but I blame his old employer who had loads of with them his working class parents , the sort Richi wouldn't meet or hang out with in a million years ! Some people just like their values and what they stand for I suppose and don't trust the LP.
We agree to disagree on politics , but I am much more interested in it than he is.

My family is pretty spilt on this also but we all manage to get on - albeit with some good natured ribbing at times!

PIL's are Tory as is my paternal uncle and his wife.

My DP's would never vote anything other than Labour.

DH and I are left leaning but happy to vote tactically (or in my case spoil my ballot if I don't have a candidate I feel able to vote for).

Believe it or not, family meet ups are very civil even when politics is discussed.

I was rather hoping that would not happen.

I'm genuinely interested in hearing from party members and didn't start the thread to start bashing peoples politics.

Family is a member they thought Penny or TT... I said her TWAW views and they changed to TT. I'm going to persuade them for Kemi I hope but they're deeply impressed by TTs military service.

Provenceinthesummer · 13/07/2022 19:45

And if you are looking for respectful views then please at least acknowledge that being called a ‘troll’ is not indicative of embracing views on either side.
Some people can’t seem to help themselves. It’s an act of self sabotage coming on to a thread and then being repeatedly offended.
We have all shades of all political parties in both families in RL and we all discuss our joint worries /concerns/ thoughts without any contention. Only on here are frothers that I suspect use the site to share their real views - they would be better being honest about who they are in RL rather than decompressing in a bitter unhealthy way.

My apologies @BreadInCaptivity. I shouldn’t have risen to the bait. I actually think (with the odd exception) that this thread’s going the way you intended. The majority of posters are trying to keep it in the spirit you intended.

No apology needed.

I appreciate your insights!

Tbh it’s a bit pointless on here these threads always go the same way

Yes I agree totally marsha and usually by the same posters victim blaming - rising to the bait? You just need to click on hide the thread.

I think the apology was intended for me actually op, so I am not sure why you responded

Tegelflughafen · 13/07/2022 20:02

@MarshaBradyo tory bashing ?

Tegelflughafen · 13/07/2022 20:08

@Blossomtoes my dp considered voting UKIP and is a leaver. Certainly prompted a lot of discussion in our house ! Great guy, certainly not racist and ended up voting labour in the last GE. Got there in the end 😂

Fillet · 13/07/2022 18:15

I'm not a Tory voter but fascinated by the idea that Kemi Badenoch is a nightmare candidate for the left

Quite. The power of an echo chamber.

I'm pretty sure Kier Starmer would welcome a Badenoch win.

Well my very Labour voting DSis who is a Labour Party member, would disagree with you.

She thinks she could spell trouble for Labour.

Blossomtoes · 13/07/2022 20:22

I tagged @BreadInCaptivity for whom the apology was intended.

Fillet · 13/07/2022 20:37

"Very" Labour voting. Oh well then.

I'm very happy to be disagreed with, incidentally. Still rooting for Kemi Grin, along with plenty of others.

Re: this thread, it's restrained. It's more or less as respectful as it can be. Every thread on MN twists, turns and evolves. You cannot police it.

The outcome of what a handful of Tory Party voters do in this leadership election will affect every man, woman and child in the country. To expect people not to engage with a discussion about that very process is a little unrealistic. It's vital that everyone is engaged with it - on or off this thread.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 13/07/2022 20:57

I agree, I think Kemi Badenoch could worry Labour. Although not as much as Penny Mordaunt, it would seem.

In fact, a Mordaunt PM/Badenoch Chancellor ticket would probably clean up in a GE. They’d cover a lot of bases and appeal beyond the standard Conservative base.

Interesting - two women hadn’t thought of that combination

BadJanetsMobile · 13/07/2022 21:08

Kemi Badenoch Will absolutely get my vote
Hopefully!!

Tegelflughafen · 13/07/2022 21:15

I find this intriguing that mordant and badenoch would clean up in another GE.
Firstly it presumes tory/floating voters disgusted with bojos's shenanigans will have forgotten it all and forgiven the tories. This will be literally the 4 th 'fresh start' in 7 years....
Secondly it ignores various huge issues on the horizon and conveniently forgotten. - the onslaught of brexit finally hitting home (we still aren't checking imports and then consequences of breaking international law re the Northern Ireland protocol/EU sanctions if we do), in addition to the cost of living and fuel price crisis. All the candidates are harking back to Thatcher, they are calling for low tax/small state policies/ hard decisions to be made which probably means yet more austerity which undoubtedly will hit red wall areas harder. I don't think it's plain sailing and displays a certain arrogance of which the LP is often accused.

XingMing · 13/07/2022 21:18

If I were a party member, Tom Tugendhat would be getting my vote. We need a reconcilation with the EU to make working in concert more fluid. This is not the same as voting to rejoin. Kemi Badenoch otherwise, because she is diversity embodied, and it sticks the finger to anyone claiming the Tories are racist or sexist.

I'm a floating voter.

Usually Labour as left centric but have voted for more centric Tory's in the past (including Johnson I'm embarrassed to admit!) and also Lib Dem when they got the coalition.
Always vote conservative until this year locally as my councillor (who was also my sociology lecturer at uni many moons ago!) was quite socialist and very centric and brilliant. He didn't stand this time as retired.

Suella is my waste of space constituency PM and I wouldn't vote for her if her life depended on it.

I'm amazed someone who lost 10% of the vote at local elections with a 5% rise in turn out thinks they are fit to become an MP let alone her absolute disdain for anyone who needs any sort of welfare including send support in schools.

So yes. I will comment because having voted in the current Tory government I feel I have an equal right to an option for Johnson's replacement even if I won't get a say.
