I'm dying with this heat. I work from home. I have my fan on full and lots of cold water but I'm really struggling. I feel ill. Any tips on how to cool down? I can't concentrate on my work and honestly feel like I might pass out!

I am just moaning a lot. It isn't helping 😆

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/07/2022 12:57

Feet in a cool bowl of water? Quick shower, don't dry your hair.

Yodaisawally · 11/07/2022 12:58

Close all your windows and blinds / curtains.
Cold water on the back of your neck
Drink lots of water

In in London, WFH in the loft conversion. With the blinds shut and windows closed it's warm but ok. I open the windows up overnight.

ZeroFucksGiven20 · 11/07/2022 13:00

I'm currently lying on the bed with the fan on me 😂 got one of them tall office fans- blaupunkt from b&m. Best money I've ever spent.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 11/07/2022 13:01

WFH in my underwear. Lots of hot tea. One big cardio session in the morning to sweat it all off.

No sugar.

Bloody hate the heat.

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 11/07/2022 13:01

Love it, love it, love it!!!

WFH with the curtains closed and the windows open and it's lovely. Might go and work in the garden later.

Augend23 · 11/07/2022 13:04

What clothing are you wearing? I find loose, airy, natural materials are much more pleasant in hot weather.

Have you got the windows and curtains closed (assuming your house is cooler than the outside world)?

Can you use a damp towel/flannel to wet your skin? then remove it and sit in front of the fan. That will increase heat loss.

(I'd also consider if you might have COVID if you're feeling unwell because frankly so many people have caught it recently that it might also explain it. I have felt like it's really impaired my ability to deal with heat even when I haven't actually had a temperature.)

alphapie · 11/07/2022 13:14

Air con, we had it installed in 4 rooms last year and it's the best thing we have ever purchased for our house

Sat here cool as a cucumber

BlackeyedSusan · 11/07/2022 13:15

Damp flannel to wipe over your skin. Bloody brilliant.

Open any windows it is safe to do so overnight. (Though not much help tonight as temperatures stay high) close windows in the morning to trap the cold air in. Close blinds and lined curtains on the windows to insulate your house. (I have old sheets as an extra layer behind the curtains until I can afford proper blinds.)

If you own the house make a way of shading the windows on the outside.

Reduce the temperature of your garden by planting trees (,long term!) Choose wisely though due to foundations. Small garden trees not bloody great conker/ash trees etc.

This

BlackeyedSusan · 11/07/2022 13:18

Wet sheet hung over the outside of the window works as well.

Pace the race and work in the cooler hours.

Do not use the toaster, microwave, kettle, hot water, cooker etc which all add heat. Nor open the fridge and freezer a lot. I try to limit those things to stop adding heat into the environment.

A580Hojas · 11/07/2022 13:32

Keeping all the curtains closed and not going out. To instantly cool down run cold water over your wrists (where you can see the veins).

Why is it so hot in your house OP? It really sounds a bit extreme if you think you are going to pass out!

PinkStarAtNight · 11/07/2022 13:34

Thank you for the suggestions! The feet in cold water and cold flannel on neck is helping

Under a tree in the back garden, bliss

Zoeslatesttrope · 11/07/2022 13:36

Put freezer blocks down your bra and between your thighs and anywhere else you can think of

Emmelina · 11/07/2022 13:36

Pet cooling pads from B&M. I bought loads of them a couple of years back! I’m WFH today and have one on the back of my chair, it’s heaven.

PinkStarAtNight · 11/07/2022 13:37

@A580Hojas we do have a very warm house, its a new build and well insulated. Good in winter but a nightmare in summer. It literally feels like there is no air anywhere in the house

I don't cope well with heat, it always makes me feel ill.

Whendovescry03 · 11/07/2022 13:37

Do you have the option to go into work while the weather is hot? I'm really appreciating the air con in the office at the moment! Our house is like a sauna and I've been getting dizzy spells because of it recently, so I understand.

Chanel05 · 11/07/2022 13:37

I bought an air con unit for £250 2 years ago. Best money I've ever spent.

LemonTT · 11/07/2022 13:39

Air con. SW facing house with lots of light 🙄 Great in the winter, dire in the summer. It just becomes stifling without air con. Black out currents and closed windows only work for one off days of higher temperatures. Not for week long heatwaves.

I think it’s becoming a necessity in the south inland or away from the coast. I gave up putting off the purchase after visiting a friends who had a unit. Lots of people now saying it’s just not possible to function in these heatwaves in UK designed home with air con.

nb I don’t use outside heatwaves, for cost and environmental reasons.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 11/07/2022 13:48

I get low blood pressure when the temperature goes over 35 Celsius. That is I have naturally low bp and it goes even lower in the heat. I do feel as if I'm ill and about to pass out. It's very unpleasant! My advice is:

Cold coca cola
Cold shower, as cold as you can. Keep you hair wet
Feet in a bucket of cold water, with ice cubes if possible
Spray water into skin then sit in front of the fan. The evaporation will cool you down

That said it's 21 degrees and cloudy where I am. Some heatwave!

Pkwi · 11/07/2022 13:54

I'm laying as still as possible, naked on my bed working.

I hate the heat.

ToastofLandon · 11/07/2022 14:00

Get a mobile air conditioning unit. I got one for about £400 a few weeks ago and it’s been a godsend. Appreciate it’s a lot of money but it’s been worth every penny working from home on these hot days.

SagittariusDwarf · 11/07/2022 14:02

Bought an air con unit yesterday. It arrives tomorrow. Can't wait.

JimMorrisonsleathertrousers · 11/07/2022 14:05

My tactic has been to moan a lot but I don't think it's helping 🫠
