I'm dying with this heat. I work from home. I have my fan on full and lots of cold water but I'm really struggling. I feel ill. Any tips on how to cool down? I can't concentrate on my work and honestly feel like I might pass out!

a swim in the sea
just gorgeous

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/07/2022 15:39

but if you are working
how about a shower?
cup of tea?

ASlipperyGenius · 11/07/2022 15:39

I have a fan set up behind my laptop so I look windswept on all my calls!

YellowMonday · 11/07/2022 15:53

Aussie here. A tip - don't drink cold water, drink luke warm water instead. Likewise to avoid cold foods. Cold drinks and foods increase your body temperate. One of the reasons a piping hot curry is a win during heat waves.

Also make sure to position your fan the correct way. While it feels great on you, for best cooling and air flow it needs to be near an open window/door to pull in fresh air and push out hot air. Lots of good guides on google of how to do it.

FeelingConcerned · 11/07/2022 16:03

@ToastofLandon is it not really noisy though?what unit have you got please?

FeelingConcerned · 11/07/2022 16:04

@alphapie can you give me a rough idea what that cost you please?

IrisVersicolor · 11/07/2022 16:05

This stuff is brilliant - it’s actually for sore muscles but it goes cold on your skin and makes you feel cool. I always carry it with me in summer.

I'm struggling, as I do every hot summer. My little new-build house with just one south facing reception room is cosy and very well-insulated for the winter but a nightmare in the heat. I keep the curtains closed and the patio doors ajar to let a bit of air in.

I'm in underwear with a sarong on top in case of unexpected callers so at least I look fairly decently attired. I'm topping up with lots of tea and putting my wrists and hands in running cold water now and again just to stay comfortable.

There is no shade whatsoever in the garden so I'm thinking of getting a pergola by the window which may keep it cooler.

Air con, we had it installed in 4 rooms last year and it's the best thing we have ever purchased for our house

Sat here cool as a cucumber

How much did that cost you? Very interested. Can you recommend company please?

MrsDThomas · 11/07/2022 16:09

I live in an old stone cottage.

its bliss! Then, its not super hot and breezy

SilverGlitterBaubles · 11/07/2022 16:10

I don't get the hysteria, it will be over in a few days and we will be back to moaning about rain

IncompleteSenten · 11/07/2022 16:11

I'm keeping the curtains closed, I'm taking lots of cool showers, having loads of ice pops, I have a fan on and I run cold water over my wrists and dab my temples with an ice pack.

And I shaved my head. Yes. Really.

VioletInsolence · 11/07/2022 16:11

Feet in a bowl of cold water preferably with ice and you’ll feel normal.

VioletInsolence · 11/07/2022 16:13

I’ve got an air conditioner too…very noisy but necessary in an upstairs flat.

Wow loving that @IncompleteSenten wish I had the balls to shave my head.

Tumbleweed101 · 11/07/2022 16:16

Curtains on sunny rooms are closed, although windows are open as my house gets a nice through breeze. I'm outside though on sunbed under a tree and it's breezy as I live on a hill. Covid is good for one thing - I've not had to go into work in the heat! Have done some bits from home but nothing too much.

Laiste · 11/07/2022 16:26

Tried this last year and it worked a treat. Doing it again this year.

At night have windows plus some blinds and curtains open to let in cool air.
At sunrise (or as soon as poss) shut ALL the curtains and blinds.
Keep them shut.
Let an air flow through with a crack in the curtains on the shady side of home, but no cracks open on sunny side.

I've done this today and its 31 outside and 24 inside. Still warm but feels like a fridge in here compared to outside!

Put a fan or two on in the room that you are in and it'll feel even cooler.

TheDepthsOfDespair · 11/07/2022 16:28

I really struggle in the slightest heat. I hide indoors with the curtains on and fan on. Luke warm showers etc.

I love being in the car with the aircon on.

We’ve been looking at converting the loft into a master bedroom and are planning on having air conditioning up there so I think I’ll spend lots of time up there in the summer!!

Gah - now i have to revise the image i have of you in my mind! (you had long dark hair).

I know it's a bit odd but i have quite clear pictures in my head of lots of regular posters :)

Its really great. I've shaved it every summer for a few years now. I highly recommend it.

In fact, I inspired my sister to do the same. She dyed the stubble funky colours. 😁

I had alopecia for several years and wore wigs and felt like shit about it all. Then I thought oh fuck this and threw the wigs away.

My hair mostly grew back although there are some thin patches but I no longer give a shit about my hair. When it irritates me - out come the clippers. It is amazing how much cooler it is.

IncompleteSenten · 11/07/2022 16:34

😁 sorry about that.

My hair is dark though so you're half right.

SlickShady · 11/07/2022 16:39

That's what air conditioning was invented for. I struggle to understand why in this day and age there are people who don't at least have portable air conditioners to use in this heat.

Kerching!

I see you in a lovely room lined with books as well ....

There's a lady who works in a shop local to me who has her head shaved all year round. She wears lovely earrings. I always think she looks fab! I'm slightly jealous. I know i could shave my head but i just haven't got the balls 😂

TrueNorthernBird · 11/07/2022 16:49

I just went for a 45 min bike ride - the breeze I created was lovely!
