Does your DC primary school allow squash through a hot day?

Neowwwm · 11/07/2022 09:03

Sent my DC with a non- see through bottle with juice in today as since weaning and trying - DC has never drank plain water. Teacher removed the bottle stating water only in the day which will be provided with their own water bottles from school and juice only at lunch time.

AIBU or should this rule be relaxed during heatwaves?

Not in a rude way but I never understand when people say that their children just never took to drinking water.

It never crossed my mind to give my kids squash from a young age so they wouldn't know any different.

If you bin all squash, kid will soon get thirsty enough to drink water.

Be careful. You will be getting called ignorant, disgusting and an awful person before you know it with opinions like that (not by me) 😆

Really? I'll give it a go. Obviously you know more about my child's disability and what would work than I do

Soubriquet · 11/07/2022 12:42

Water only here too but they don’t kick up a fuss if it’s squash in a bottle.

Luckily, my two are happy to drink plain water

Not afraid to call bullshit on this. There is no disability that requires a child to drink sugar water rather than water from infancy.

Smokealarmwakeup · 11/07/2022 12:43

I’m an adult and can’t drink water, there are no additional needs here! I hate the taste, me hating water is no different to someone else hating mushrooms.
I really struggle going abroad because I feel bloated from drinking fizzy pop or fresh juice all of the time when there is no squash available but I just can’t drink plain water, I’ve tried making it weaker and weaker but it gets to a point where I just can’t drink it and before I know it I end up ill. I went away a few weeks ago and had a banging headache from being dehydrated and still couldn’t bring myself to drink the only drink available which was water.
I would be more concerned about him dehydrating than his teeth at this point.

Soubriquet · 11/07/2022 12:44

I can’t stand water. Especially tap water. I can tolerate drinking volvic but I have to be desperate.

I quite liked the vitamin water they sold for a while but again it’s like very pale diluted squash

Underhisi · 11/07/2022 12:45

"It’s water only and that’s as it should be. Once one starts to be allowed squash then they all want it"

My son drinks only water at school and at home. Most of the other children at his special school drink squash. He accepts that he has water. If he can accept that others drink different things from him then I am sure a NT child in a mainstream school can manage to cope with that too.

Jennybeans401 · 11/07/2022 12:45

We use half flavoured water and half tap water in the bottles and it has been okay. There's just enough of a flavour for dcs to drink it.

PurpleHues · 11/07/2022 12:45

SnowyPetals · 11/07/2022 09:06

Our school is water only, and I don't think that's unreasonable.

Same

florenceandthemac · 11/07/2022 12:46

Surely if you're thirsty you'll drink water

Mumofsend · 11/07/2022 12:46

I send mine with flavoured water

theviewfrommywindow · 11/07/2022 12:47

My daughter used to be the same so we put sugar free, flavoured water in her bottle. We explained the situation to her teacher and they were fine with it. She still takes flavoured water now.

Perhaps try not bring ignorant, calling people idiots yourself, being diablist, undermining people who have the conditions... I'll also try a third time because God loves a trier - are you actually going to back up what you've said? Give some practical advice? I don't mean "whatever it takes to get them to drink water", I mean actual, practical tips since so many of us have seemingly exhausted all options.
I can't see many insults myself, and certainly not from me. But what you are saying IS disgusting. You have no right to belittle and undermine autistic people who tell you they can't stomach water, your attitude is appealing and I dearly hope, from your first comment, that you are not a teacher yourself.

artisanbread · 11/07/2022 12:47

I'm a teacher. Every year we have two or three kids who "won't drink water". We don't allow squash so within a few days they are all managing to drink water. Most kids just want to do what the other kids do and if they're thirsty, they will drink. The only exception has been some children with ASD who genuinely won't drink plain water even if they are extremely thirsty.

Is there some sort of twat klaxon going off where you all turn up to show your ignorance of autism and spd ?

florenceandthemac · 11/07/2022 12:46

I wouldn’t! I can carry a bottle around with me all day while feeling desperate for a drink but never contemplate drinking the water because I hate the taste

Underhisi · 11/07/2022 12:50

"Not afraid to call bullshit on this. There is no disability that requires a child to drink sugar water rather than water from infancy."

I bet you say 'there is no disability that requires' about lots of things.

Not your child, not your problem.

Sirzy · 11/07/2022 12:50

It seems that some in here know more about other childrens disabilities than their parents and care teams!

im lucky Ds will drink enough squash to keep him hydrated. But he is tube fed because he would starve (and very nearly did) without it.

but seems some of you know more than the consultant who did the surgery!

starfishmummy · 11/07/2022 12:53

My son's primary actually provided squash for breaks and lunchtimes!! I was constantly being asked why I didn't "allow" him to have any. I said I had no lroblem with it and he could have whatever he liked, but he actually preferred water!!

Not that you know of because you clearly have a very tiny working knowledge of disabilities and their effects. If you’re ignorant just say that.

YABU with this comment.

Water only is not stupid.

Giving kids only sugary drinks is irresponsible. The damage it does to their teeth is real and creates bad habits for later life.

This ^

GrinAndVomit · 11/07/2022 12:59

Water only. I support it.

TheSoundOfLunch · 11/07/2022 09:16

There is no “additional need” that means a child should have a sugary drink rather than water.

Oh please. You have no idea

UserNo380002 · 11/07/2022 13:01

Water only here but some kids have weak squash in non see through bottles.

as a parent I do think it should be relaxed in the heat. Drinking squash is better than nothing. I have two kids, one who will drink water and the other who isn't keen.

Many kids simply won't drink water, I was one of those kids, wasn't so strict Years ago and I still drink squash now rather then water. My teeth haven't rotted like some people have suggested 😅

Ihatemyroad · 11/07/2022 13:02

Our primary is water only.
