To feel a bit sad we are missing the really warm weather?

Every year this seems to happen where there’s a heatwave the last week/two weeks of term … I just wish the schools were breaking up this week!

Yes, feels like they break up two weeks too late. The weather often seems to decline once they break up.

Darbs76 · 11/07/2022 07:41

Yep by the time the schools break up the best of the summer weather is over. My friends daughter has broke up but she’s in private school. Some schools in Leicester break up around now and back mid August. Wish England / wales was the same. USA breaks up in June, back in August. We always go to USA on holiday mid - end August as it’s quieter

Vallmo47 · 11/07/2022 07:44

I couldn’t possibly do anything in this heat so it’s boring at mine, everyone congregating underneath the fan and looking miserable. But I do know what you mean OP. I’m from Sweden and my family just will not accept what I say about our way here, they argue it every single year without fail (I’ve lived here for 19 years so it’s a TAD annoying now).
Be thankful if you don’t have covid, my son and I are dripping in sweat and not feeling good at all.

...basing school holidays around the notoriously unreliable British weather seems like a poor choice to me.

SleeplessInEngland · 11/07/2022 07:47

30 degrees plus is horrible though. Dreading next weekend when there’ll be 4-5 days in a row of it.

Maireas · 11/07/2022 07:48

The school summer holidays are never based around weather. It was because children were needed to help bring in the harvest.

Doidontimmm · 11/07/2022 07:50

Move to Scotland! Kids are off here!!

July has fairly consistently had the best weather for some years, though.

YANBU. By mid august the weather starts turning rubbish. Always thought they should finish start of July back mid august.

Bunnycat101 · 11/07/2022 07:54

Yup I remember last year the last few weeks of school were boiling too. We’ve already had a letter from school saying they’ll be watching them and probably limiting play if it’s too hot. It makes the last few weeks even more pointless in terms of education. Week after mine will be in camps but because they’re based in private schools she’ll be in fully air conditioned classrooms/hall so will be getting on much better.

Threetulips · 11/07/2022 07:54

And September is always lovely!

pictish · 11/07/2022 08:01

In Britain the weather is typically best in June and July. I’m very glad to be in Scotland because we break up for summer at the end of June and get the whole of July and half of August. Thank you!

Some schools down south STILL have a fortnight to go…summer break my arse. Everything’s getting a bit worn out and ropey by August and September is not summer, although it’s true to say it can be lovely.
Sucks to be in England I guess.

It's always been the choice. It's supposed to coincide with harvest

Frazzled2207 · 11/07/2022 08:16

Was just thinking this. They should be off in July not august. It almost always goes downhill- grey and damp- round here in august

Tiredoftiers · 11/07/2022 08:19

Even up in Scotland there’s usually a complaint that the school summer holidays are too late, and should be more may/June time. Up until the last couple of years the weather in Scotland is usually best may/June and July is wet.

Doidontimmm · 11/07/2022 07:50

Move to Scotland! Kids are off here!!

Then it’s usually a heatwave mid August when they go back!

speakout · 11/07/2022 08:24

Ours break up at the end of June- always more sensible imo.
Always a time when we would book our family holiday- much cheaper and we would nip over the border into England to fly from Newcastle - we can literally save hundreds of pound on a foreign holiday. prices shoot up once the English schools break up, but we are usually just coming home as English start their holiday

TheTerfTavern · 11/07/2022 08:30

It’s totally ridiculous

I’m Scottish and have never got used to how late the holidays are in England, it’s ludicrous. Of course it all goes to shit in Scotland too because the best weather is May/June but end of July??!!

my children broke up two weeks ago and have brilliant weather , so awful that English kids don’t get the same and are still stuck in school

Yes…we always take our family holiday in the first two weeks of July. It’s way less crowded. We’re just back from a week in the Lake District…good weather, everything open, minimal queues and available parking. No traffic jams either. We had a great time, biked, hillwalked, sauntered around Keswick in the sun.
Sweet!
Bet it won’t be like that next week.

Yeah that's the way to ensure good weather 😂

Yes!

EnglishRose1320 · 11/07/2022 08:35

Surely with the temps like they are this week it doesn't make much difference, you need to be inside from 11-3 anyway. I've just been going out for evening strolls/trips to the beach after school.

I guess it would be nice if you lived in a city to be able to go away somewhere during this time. However I think whenever the holidays are they work for some people and not for others.

alphapie · 11/07/2022 08:37

YANBU I've pulled mine out this week so we can enjoy the weather together.

Last week of term nothing happens anyway in early primary and they'll have a much better time at Bournemouth beach than in a hot classroom making crafts.

Kendrickspenguin · 11/07/2022 08:42

In our area they have two weeks off in October, so my children have another three weeks in school. It is rubbish because it is difficult to fill the time when it is cold and rainy at the end of October. It feels like they should be winding down for summer now, but they are no where near it.

waveyourpompoms · 11/07/2022 08:43

It’s great! It means kids aren’t taking over wherever we want to go 😅
