Every year this seems to happen where there’s a heatwave the last week/two weeks of term … I just wish the schools were breaking up this week!

Good. I can't stick the heat and stay indoors as much as possible. I hope it will be cooler in the holidays 😅

fatlazycow · 11/07/2022 08:55

The last couple of Septembers have been pretty hot though haven’t they? Unless I’m not remembering right, I’m sure it was like extra summer

Tbh for me 30 degree and above heat is not to be enjoyed but rather survived and ‘got through’ I hate it 😖

Try living up North ( Scotland) and having to listen to the fabulous heatwave the UK is having when its been freezing and chucking it down.😡

JudgeRindersMinder · 11/07/2022 08:22

Then it’s usually a heatwave mid August when they go back!

This! Sweltering in classrooms.

Isaidnoalready · 11/07/2022 08:58

Fine for us ds hates the sun and won't leave the house so it's better to have more time off when its raining so we can go out and enjoy 🤣

godmum56 · 11/07/2022 09:00

if schools breaking up will end this horrible weather, I want them to break up NOW

I would take moderately cold and wet over 30+ temperatures any day of the week.

YANBU. By mid august the weather starts turning rubbish. Always thought they should finish start of July back mid august.

I think I'd only support that if the October half-term was extended to two weeks and/or maybe the Christmas holiday was extended by a week and brought earlier. Kids and teachers are always so exhausted by the end of that autumn term, it's brutal as it is without making it longer!

MermaidEyes · 11/07/2022 09:08

Mine wishes they were off instead of being stuck in a sweaty classroom in a tie and blazer 😒

itwasntmetho · 11/07/2022 09:08

I've said this for years, mid August onwards can feel quite autumnal.

Somethingneedstochange · 11/07/2022 09:08

As long as it's not raining it's a bonus as far as I'm concerned. I like a bit of sun with a breeze. I don't like being out in the heat all day. My kids have epilepsy and they have a lot more siezures when it's hot often missing out on stuff we had planned. Sometimes in hospital for weeks to get siezures under control.

We've done theme parks in the heat that was exhausting and not much fun. Even though we stayed in the shade as much as possible and went on water rides to cool off. You don't need to have a sun tan to have fun. 20 degrees is about my limit even then I like a breeze.

Chipsahoy · 11/07/2022 09:12

Yup Scotland have been off a week, we spent most of it on the beach last week. However we will be back in august.

whenwillthemadnessend · 11/07/2022 09:12

It's going to be too hot to enjoy though.
Unless you have a pool on tap 34 is not enjoyable.

I guess if your north then it's
Ok.

I always go away in uk during first 3 weeks as the last 3 are to autumnal.

weebarra · 11/07/2022 09:12

It's great! We're on our second week of the summer holidays and in Spain. The town is less crowded than it will be soon and we flew from Newcastle so cheaper too!

Julymakesmecry1999 · 11/07/2022 09:13

It's usually scorching hot for the last two weeks in school and the first week of the summer holidays. Then it all does pear shaped, until the first week back at school in September when it becomes scorching hot again. It seems to follow a similar pattern every year.
My eldest has a Birthday on 24th July and I can't ever remember a 24th when it has not been scorching hot (including the one where I was giving birth!).

Scotland is a big place. In shorts and T-shirt preparing for 26c again today. We are north east Scotland.

Loics · 11/07/2022 09:17

I'm glad to be honest, just hoping this weekend in particular is nowhere near as hot as predicted.
Mine are in nursery, and will likely be indoors in extreme heat, so it means they will be kept busy and entertained without me having to find countless indoor activities every day! It's easier (and more pleasant) to take them out and about in cooler weather.

MeanderingGently · 11/07/2022 09:19

Leicestershire schools broke up last week, they are already on holiday.
They go back at the end of August though.

pinkstripeycat · 11/07/2022 09:24

When my DCs were at primary school it was always baking hot in May and June. By beginning August autumn was setting in.

Eldest DS has finished his exams and has only set foot outside for a game of footy once the sun sets as it’s too hot.

Me to. I'm far happier being indoors on a normal working day and not having to endlessly police suncream and hat usage. If weather breaks to a much more pleasant 20 with sunny intervals as it has been for weeks that will be far better for the holidays.

In Britain the weather is typically best in June and July. I’m very glad to be in Scotland because we break up for summer at the end of June and get the whole of July and half of August. Thank you!

Some schools down south STILL have a fortnight to go…summer break my arse. Everything’s getting a bit worn out and ropey by August and September is not summer, although it’s true to say it can be lovely.
Sucks to be in England I guess.

Yes, that’s all very well but our weather is better down here, especially in the deepest south where we are.

Must suck to be up there sometimes too.

easyday · 11/07/2022 09:31

@Darbs76 not everywhere in US - break up third week in June back after Labour Day first week in September. We had an amazing 10 weeks or more. But no October half term (my dd here gets two weeks then), and Christmas break was a week or just over depending when it fell.
I do think they break up late here though.

eglantine7 · 11/07/2022 09:35

I think so too. Start summer holidays earlier and go back earlier. Sports day in 29 degrees heat isnt great.
Lucky private school children this week and next.

alphapie · 11/07/2022 08:37

YANBU I've pulled mine out this week so we can enjoy the weather together.

Last week of term nothing happens anyway in early primary and they'll have a much better time at Bournemouth beach than in a hot classroom making crafts.

Jesus. I didn't realise education was only important when it was cloudy.

Sparklingbrook · 11/07/2022 09:48

We have a Lido in my town and always the minute that the schools break up the weather turns and it's not Lido weather. Never took my own DC.
They are putting on late and early swims this week.

I do have good memories of going to school during heatwaves though, outside lessons and my High school had an outdoor pool. That said the summer once we had broken up seemed better back then. <rose tinted specs>
