Every year this seems to happen where there’s a heatwave the last week/two weeks of term … I just wish the schools were breaking up this week!

Denmark start summer holidays in the last week of June and back on the second week of August.
That could work here too!

MrsMargo · 12/07/2022 19:07

My son finished all his exams in June and now in July they are not teaching anything new, just waiting for time to pass.. but kids need to be in school by 19 July. So useless..

balalake · 12/07/2022 19:27

I'd expect having summer holidays earlier and going back in early August would be more unpopular than what English children have now.

littlesos · 12/07/2022 19:43

I'm in Leicestershire and schools finished last week around here.

amispeakingintongues · 12/07/2022 19:44

I had heat stroke today while off work, so unless you have a swimming pool in your back garden I see 0 benefits. I cannot wait for this awful weather to end so I can actually function and live my life!!

XelaM · 12/07/2022 19:55

Mine has been off sonce last Friday 👍She's at a private school though.

She has been complaining that all her friends in state schools are still at school and all her private school friends are on holiday 😂 so she's bored

PeachyPeachTrees · 12/07/2022 20:05

My eldest broke up from state secondary school on Friday. Next year his younger brother will also be at that school and we are planning on a July holiday! Always seems to be hot now and go cooler when majority of school finish.

We live in Leicester and broke up last week. Currently sipping cider in a very hot Somerset.

Rhaenys · 12/07/2022 20:29

I used to love being in school in the hot weather with my mates. Sometimes we’d even have lessons outside. Some of my best school memories are of break times in the sun.

RollingInTheCreek · 12/07/2022 20:35

DC seem to be having a ball at the moment! Lots of outside play, water fights etc. A lot of kids spend a fair enough of time in holiday clubs anyway!

Yep by the time the schools break up the best of the summer weather is over. My friends daughter has broke up but she’s in private school. Some schools in Leicester break up around now and back mid August. Wish England / wales was the same. USA breaks up in June, back in August. We always go to USA on holiday mid - end August as it’s quieter

You wouldn’t want it like the USA, they get 10/11 weeks off. Same here in Spain. It’s way too long! If you think childcare is hard for six weeks, it’s a nightmare for that length of time.

...basing school holidays around the notoriously unreliable British weather seems like a poor choice to me.

But basing it on the fact that they need children to help with the Harvest (which is basically what it’s still based on from times of yore) seems a much better idea

I think we should have a shorter Summer break of around 3-4 weeks and add some extra time onto the half terms where they only have a week off and it goes too fast

Doidontimmm · 11/07/2022 07:50

Move to Scotland! Kids are off here!!

Lol, or northern ireland.... ours got off 30th June, back 1st September.
Saying that, we're not getting the same heat as England. Constant 18-22 degrees the last couple days, at least where I am 😊

TheDuchess1979 · 12/07/2022 22:20

Secondary teacher here and I think YANBU.

I will say that actually we teach children right up to 3pm on the last day of term…so the excuse of “they are only doing fun things at this point” doesn’t quite hold up…BUT it is too hot in schools. They aren’t built for this heat and trying to teach children when it’s 30 degrees+ in the classroom is painful. They are hot, sweaty and tired. Lots of nosebleeds and “Miss, I feel sick!”

And I can confirm that it will indeed start raining as soon as it’s the hols. Happens every year!

Londoncallingme · 12/07/2022 22:24

Every year. As soon as state schools break up the weather turns.

sisuwasabellend · 12/07/2022 22:38

@Vallmo47 You’re “a tad” annoyed at your Swedish relatives for reminding you of the benefits of the Swedish “summer system”? 😀 I’m Swedish too, and I can’t stop being “a tad” annoyed at the UK summer system. I’ve lived here 24 years, with kids for 15 of those. Saying that, I do believe that August used to be the hot month - and I would take the later summer in Inglaterra anytime, if they managed to sort out their child care system. But yes, it’s tough when people remind us that it’s better “back home” despite us being stuck over here… That means that I sympathise with you too, OP.

Mydogsanasshole · 12/07/2022 22:57

You want to try living in NI, we’ve been bombarded with ‘heat wave’ warnings yet haven’t seen the sun since the 13th of June with no sign of it appearing in the next seven days either. It’s bloody depressing, like the middle of Autum. 50 shades of grey has nothing on us!

Mamanyt · 12/07/2022 23:13

Give it a few (very few) years. The weather will be getting much warmer, much sooner, and lasting much longer.

British Columbia has had such bad heat waves that fruit crops are literally cooking on the trees.

Vallmo47 · 13/07/2022 06:58

@sisuwasabellend Yes just a tad annoyed at repeating myself every.single.summer. Other than that I like the British set up!! Ha ett underbart sommarlov. :)
