To feel a bit sad we are missing the really warm weather?

Every year this seems to happen where there’s a heatwave the last week/two weeks of term … I just wish the schools were breaking up this week!

Yes, that’s all very well but our weather is better down here, especially in the deepest south where we are.

Must suck to be up there sometimes too.

Oh it does. Quite. I won’t argue with you there.
It’s all swings and roundabouts really isn’t it?

HouseHelp23 · 11/07/2022 09:59

@Chipsahoy Scotland is a big place. In shorts and T-shirt preparing for 26c again today. We are north east Scotland.

Oh behave, and that makes what, 4 nice days this year so far? Scotland is not a big place in terms of weather. PP is quite right that TV and radio have been on about the 'UK heat' for weeks and yet we've had unseasonably cool, cloudy and wet weather. It was the worst May I can remember, and June wasn't much better.

Saying that, anything above about 28 is too hot for me so I do feel for those down South.

Move to Scotland! Kids are off here!!

Yes but unfortunately so is the sunshine!!! 🤣

Yes, feels like they break up two weeks too late. The weather often seems to decline once they break up.

So very true, I also remember the 3.25 rain storm, so often it would start to pour down 5 minutes before the bell! September is often lovely too so they get the disappointment at both ends of the holiday.

It's usually scorching hot for the last two weeks in school and the first week of the summer holidays. Then it all does pear shaped, until the first week back at school in September when it becomes scorching hot again. It seems to follow a similar pattern every year.
My eldest has a Birthday on 24th July and I can't ever remember a 24th when it has not been scorching hot (including the one where I was giving birth!).

Absolutely does this every year it seems! Scorching until after day 2 when theve broken up. Then cold and wet. Then scorching again the first or second week back in school@

HashtagShitShop · 11/07/2022 10:35

I'm a grumpy bugger in this heat. I have hyperhydrosis /excessive sweating all year round (essentially how you feel/sweat when it's at its highest in the UK is my day to day life even in winter) and other health conditions so at very high risk in this weather of dehydration and hospitalisation.

I do nothing but hermit in this weather, I wish I could send it to you to add on to your break for the kids wheh they get out of school 😊

RollingInTheCreek · 11/07/2022 10:45

I think we all just have to enjoy it for what is is whenever we get the nice weather! I have lots of memories of lovely summers days over the summer holidays (yes even august!) not pouring rain both as a child and with my DC, still in primary.
They enjoy the sun at break and lunch time and after school. When it's nice and they're not in ASC they come straight home into the paddling pool and have dinner outside.
I doubt they will change the holidays so there's not much point lamenting the weather. The only thing I hate is when you go on hols and its gorgeous in England- much prefer it being grim and drizzly and feeling like you're flying off for some needed sun!Grin

Jesus. I didn't realise education was only important when it was cloudy.

Blimey. I can’t believe parents do this

fizzywat · 11/07/2022 10:58

I am not familiar with UK school system, so I wondered if anyone could to tell me why all school holidays are not co-ordinated? Is it because the local authority or area decides independently of other areas?

Seems a long time to wait for a break in certain parts, and if I am correct most English schools close at the end of this week?

It does sound very late. When do they reopen then? Is is mid September or is it a shorter Summer break?

Sparklingbrook · 11/07/2022 10:59

Me neither. Go to school only when the weather is bad. Who knew?

I don't have DC at school any more but where I am in the UK the state schools always break up around 20th July and return around 5th September. About 6 weeks off.

alphapie · 11/07/2022 11:04

@LindaEllen how is sitting around doing eff all of educational value?

My kids are all ahead in terms of attainment, and a couple of weeks doing summer crafts and dressing up isn't missing much.

Of they were sitting SATs next year it would be different but the curriculum at mines primary school is so light in the last few weeks

incornerreading · 11/07/2022 11:09

@fizzywat In England kids also get a week’s holiday at the end of May so that helps keep them going until the summer holidays start. Although mine are pretty ready for it to be their summer holidays now!

IGotItInTheSales · 11/07/2022 11:13

It suits me!

Places are peaceful with no hordes of kids running round

Perfect!

TonTonMacoute · 11/07/2022 11:14

I live in Cornwall and have noticed that every year the crap summer weather starts at the same time as the school holidays. Fact!

Dixiechickonhols · 11/07/2022 11:15

The town I worked in still had wake’s holidays until 20 years ago. Week off beginning July. Back a few weeks then 3 or 4 weeks off then back and another week off late September (neighbouring town had 2 in September) It seems ideal to me. It stopped as teachers were employed by council and contracts started 1/9 so August start in x town didn’t fit and August babies we’re starting school age 3. It was well liked by parents.

Icanstillrecallourlastsummer · 11/07/2022 11:15

Not really. I'd just be stuck at home with two bored hot kids. On days like this there's not much to do out and about as it's just too hot. Beaches etc would be massively overcrowded.

Mumofsend · 11/07/2022 11:18

I'd much rather the teacher deals with my overheated, foul tempered 7 YO DD in this weather than me*

We do miss the hottest weather by the time we've broken up but trying to do days out in this heat is miserable. Plus I live just off sandbanks so this heat +summer holidays would have the whole town gridlocked more than it already is.

*I'm not being overly serious!

VioletInsolence · 11/07/2022 11:19

But the weather has been in the low twenties for most of the summer here (Cambridge) and it has barely rained. I know you’re talking about August but it’s unlikely that the weather will be much cooler. I’m not sure why people are still moaning about British weather when it’s been consistently hot and sunny.

I’m not sure what’s fun about spending the whole time trying to keep kids and dogs cool and sitting with your feet in a bowl of iced water (which is what I’m doing right now!). It’s hotter than the Maldives but with no air conditioning.

Floydthebarber · 11/07/2022 11:23

This is lovely weather but when its this hot it is hard to plan things with two young dds (5 and 7). On Saturday they couldn't go on the play ground as it was too hot to hold or slide down. I find we plan things like a walk in the woods or make sure we are indoors in the hottest hours. I'm cautious as I burn easily but dd1 gets heatrash which then flares up her eczema. I find the cooler summer weather easier to plan for.

whynotwhatknot · 11/07/2022 11:23

well youre not really missing it youre still here i presume and theres a weather warning not to stay out in the sun so

Floydthebarber · 11/07/2022 11:36

alphapie · 11/07/2022 08:37

YANBU I've pulled mine out this week so we can enjoy the weather together.

Last week of term nothing happens anyway in early primary and they'll have a much better time at Bournemouth beach than in a hot classroom making crafts.

But will they? My dds are playing with their friends, having afternoon ice lollies, playing games. They would choose a week of fun with their friends rather than an extra week of me organising fun for them.

lovescats3 · 11/07/2022 11:41

Are the people posting on here who are rejoicing they can go places without children being there parents???

Vampirenotangel · 11/07/2022 11:54

My dc are off from this week but honestly it's far too hot to do anything anyway so we are sat inside with the doors open..I hope for cooler weather in the next couple of weeks so that we can actually go out ans stay out

LetsPlayShadowlands · 11/07/2022 11:55

Mine will get more enjoyment from the weather in school this week. I certainly wouldn't be taking her out and about it's just too hot. Hoping for some pleasant weather during the holidays. Can get a lot more done and have a lot more fun while feeling comfortable on a mild, even cloudy day, than in sweltering heat and sun.
