I have a current fix of £70 a month June 2021 - June 2023. Looking at other fixes for my usage the cheapest is £194 a month.

It's obscene.

Bertieboo82 · 09/07/2022 06:29

I have just compared this month’s bill with the same month for 2021

12% LESS!!! Why? Because I have been so much more thoughtful with turning lights off and hot water etc. It’s been no hardship and better for environment.

This is promising! I'm really trying. Will up the ante on that.

@DillonPanthersFNL - yes! The rest of my flat is cold but I'm only in the other rooms for a small amount of time, so what is the point of having them heated? Surely if people want to reduce their electricity bills in winter then they need to heat less rooms?

Amongst all the angst. Surely people do have to use less energy, that is the idea.
The stat is saying 20.9c right now. I know when I used to visit my parents their home was heated to 21c all yr round. Our heating is off.
Who on earth thinks it's ok to mimic a temperate canary island in their own homes wtf.😂
It's too warm. Even in the depths of winter, our home doesn't dip below 16c. Once the log burner goes on, the main room temp shoots up to 26c which is far too warm. We only really need to heat the kitchen and the girl's bedroom. I think they can have double duvets and hot water bottles this yr.
Our boiler stat is turned down to 55c. And only 2 radiators are used in winter.
I do feel we've become entitled to have

I've just worked out that we've used £2.95 worth of gas in 9 days. Most of that is standing charge. We use around £60 per month for electricity.

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 09/07/2022 07:00

OOps pressed return before I'd finished.
'Entitled to heat our homes to Caribbean levels'.
It's not sustainable.

Diverseopinions · 09/07/2022 07:10

Getting pay as you go meters might help with budgeting, as you don't get hit with a very large bill.

Looking at the sunshine outside, I wonder why this( or the next government) don't focus on solar panels in as many homes as possible.

EveSix · 09/07/2022 07:22

It seems so far out there, it is hard to wrap my head around.

The cynicism and opportunism of the privatisation of utilities is shameful. But they were let go.

If you can convince people that a service is a bit crap, and / or that those working within it are lazy and ineffective, people will literally give it away, and unwittingly their own stake in it, to spite those they have been groomed to despise.

I will never understand Britain in this respect -a tendency to self-sabotage and to cut a collective nose to spite it's face. A bizarre propensity to ridicule and dismiss solutions which seem 'lefty' or 'political', yet still moan when an elected right-wing government implements right-wing policies. I think it's a deliberate and cynical disenfranchisement of big parts of the population from a sense of political literacy, or any kind of class analysis; many people not really seeing where they 'sit' in the bigger picture, and how their disengagement directly benefits others, perpetuated by the right-wing media. People would rather be poor because they're being screwed over by free market capitalists than, god forbid, consider left-of-centre solutions. The fear of Jeremy Corbyn's 'dangerous political ideology' always baffled me; in Scandinavia, where I'm from, he would be considered a pretty run of the mill politician.

BellePeppa · 09/07/2022 07:31

I’m going to have to keep heating down to a minimum. I won’t put the CH on, instead I’ll plug in a radiator for a short while if the room is freezing. I’ll be buying extra hot water bottles and we’ll sit on the sofa with blankets. They can’t put my DD up as I’ll just cancel it and pay what I can. If we’re not going out anywhere that day there’ll be no showers, just a sink wash. I’ll do whatever I have to do to keep the heating costs down as I am already living on a very tight budget. A few years ago I would have been having sleepless nights over it but I’m so done with stress over money that I have no stress left to give.

EveSix · 09/07/2022 07:31

LieBig,yep, the ocean.

Isaidnoalready · 09/07/2022 07:35

Will it be allowed though? Surely the whole point of the system is its approved first?

HarryBlackberry1 · 09/07/2022 07:36

I currently pay £117 a month with EON. Coming to the end of my tariff and the cheapest they can offer me fixed is £295 a month. It's disgraceful. We simply can't afford this.

MiniPiccolo · 08/07/2022 20:28

It wont be anywhere near seasoned enough to burn safely this winter u less you want a chimney fire. Wood needs to be seasoned for a whole year. Hence the name.

She said next winter

FatOaf · 09/07/2022 07:50

People are talking about what the Ofgem-approved cap will be: www.theguardian.com/business/2022/may/24/energy-bills-likely-to-rise-by-800-in-october-says-ofgem-chief

This is the magnitude of the increase the regulator says it will allow.

I don't understand people who think it won't happen.

ToastedWaffle · 08/07/2022 20:40

I'm.a single parent with two primary aged kids. Just been informed they will be putting breakfast and after school club fees up in september. And this shit show on top. Genuine question, what would happen if we all cancelled our direct debits to the energy companies? I feel sick I cant afford these hikes.

If you stop paying they can put you on a pay as you go meter which is more expensive anyway, and then if you don't put money on it then you'll be cut off. They can't cut your water off legally but gas and electric they very much can.

Svara · 09/07/2022 09:00

ToastedWaffle · 08/07/2022 21:30

If we all did it en masse, I think it would create such a monumental headache that something give. Everyone just refuse to pay. 1 person does it and gets penalised. Millions of people do it and ....

I've seen something on social media about cancelling direct debits from October. The credit built up plus the £400 would stop us from going into debt immediately but it would still mess with their cash flow wouldn't it?

Afterfire · 09/07/2022 09:08

Yep, this.

I don’t know why people keep saying they won’t cut people off. They can, and they will.

Turning off lights does fuck all.

Heating, showers etc make a difference

That's a patronising post. People can reduce their usage but when the costs double over a year, that is going to hurt a lot of people.

I live in a small flat. We are out at school and work a lot of the time. Our usage is low but it's still expensive relative to income.

There are heads in the sand and a general ignorance about energy prices.

you do understand what energy is don’t you?

and clearly it does make a difference. 12% In My case 😂

I said turning off lights makes fuck all difference

Do you know how much energy a 10 watt light uses in a year and the cost of turning it off?

felulageller · 09/07/2022 09:40

I can see us all going back to the days of huddling together in one room, hot water bottles every night, thermal jammies, bed socks, 2 duvets, under throws on the couch, weekly baths rather than daily showers, cold water for daily washing/ hands/face, electric rather than gas hobs, using the microwave rather than hob.

Not opening windows and living in stuffy houses.

cakeorwine · 09/07/2022 09:43

If you want to save energy significantly, then you need to look at things that heat water, heat air and those that use a lot of power to move things.

A 1000 watt device uses 1KWH if used for 1 hour That's about 28p but probably about 40 p soon.

A 10,000 watt device such as an electric shower would use £4 an hour in October. £1 for 15 minutes.

A 2000 watt heater will cost about 80p an hour to run.

This is where energy is used in the home. And where savings can be made

cakeorwine · 09/07/2022 09:46

An hour of vacuuming will use about 1.4 KWH (with a 1400 watt hoover)

So about 56p an hour in October.

(Unless it's a Brexit opportunity to have more powerful vacuums)

But that is the only example I gave

lights off
less hot water

vermicello · 09/07/2022 09:54

We need to start using coal, nuclear, fracking etc like China and Russia. No point in using useless "green energy" when most of the world isn't and doesn't care about climate change and it means your own people suffer. Time to worry about the people in the here and now otherwise nobody will have quality of life now, let alone in 50 years time.
