To think Tory party is not ready for a non-white PM

While all this talk about Rishi goes on, I just can't see it happening. Too much of the tory party is old english and super duper white

this from an independent headline - The Conservative leadership contest is dominated by white men who've furthered inequality in various departments. The winner will be chosen by a membership who are 71 per cent male, 97 per cent white and 44 per cent aged over 65

I just wanted to add to this thread. I'm Black and I think the UK will not elect a non-white PM. London is not the UK. Ethnic minority tories tend to be treated better than their counter parts in other parties but they've really drank too much of the cool aid this time. This is not the US. The UK at its core is very very racist. There is no way in hell it will elect a non white leader.

Sadly I think you are absolutely spot on

I think the issue is that the country is not ready for a billionaire PM during a time of economic crisis with millions relying on food banks, most people panicking about energy bills, inflation and interest rate rises.

This

It is only the left that appear to 'see' colour. I don't think the tory party, or its voters and members, distinguish politicians by their colour. If they say the rights things, and more importantly DO the right things, then their skin colour is rightfully completely irrelevant.

Rishi should not become PM but not because he has more melanin in his skin than his rivals but because he is a backstabbing, manoevering, disloyal and economically useless MP who many members see as a modern day Brutus.

feedyourheed · 09/07/2022 09:21

Can I just add in here that Suella Braverman is exceptionally popular with members and would be chosen by them in a heartbeat, despite, as you put it, being 'non-white'

the80sweregreat · 09/07/2022 09:25

Angela Raynor's 'scum' remark will haunt her
It was out of order and a reason many won't vote Labour. (What was she thinking ? )
Diane Abbot isn't liked at all outside her own constituency it seems.
It's refreshing that the ones in the running so far are diverse and from different backgrounds.

Well this is interesting Kemi Badenoch has just announced she will run.

A woman of Nigerian origin, who spent some of her childhood in Nigeria, ALevels at an FE college, University of Sussex, worked in McDonalds.

"Ordinary" and black African. I think the Tories (and the country) may be ready for a posh, rich Asian, but a (more) working class black african woman?

That will be interesting. I think your last sentence sums it up nicely and is certainly in line with my husband's thinking, although his connections to Africa go via the caribbean and slavery.

I think events have proved Angela Rayner right and alot of people admire her for saying it.

I don't live in Diane Abbot's constituency, nowhere near, and I like her so not sure where you get that from.

I disagree. Rishi Sunak was given the best job as chancellor and most people like him. Most people don't care about skin colour.

I think the issue is whether most Conservative party members care. No doubt we'll find out in due course.

That's why I'm hoping he gets the gig, tbh.

The racist element among Tory voters might be put off voting for the party, so it could increase the chances of getting rid of the lot of them.

I have been thinking exactly this, and hoping for a non-white candidate to be elected for this reason.

In many ex labour areas in the North many UKIP supporters switched to Boris. They will not be keen on a non white PM.

catandcoffee · 09/07/2022 09:35

Question....why do people say non white.
Why not say of African, Asian heritage,if it needs to be said at all.

Alliumpoppyrose · 09/07/2022 09:56

What I find more disgusting to all this are leftwing voters whom let's face it despise any tory, desperately trying to push the race card as a way to try to force the conservatives to elect Rishi Sunka to prove they are not racist just so they have a chance of winning.

Sunaks taxes have crippled most people, his wife tried to dodge tax and he even said in a BBC interview years ago sat next to his father he has never had a working class friend and laughed about it like an evil man. He back stabbed Boris and went along punishing the UK just to forward his plant to offer to reverse it just to elected. He's just a slimy crook, end of no matter what is colour.

Not exactly.

When you look at how racist the leader of the Conservative party is, which is well documented, of course it will be used against them and rightly so. To me, electing a leader who has said such outrightly racist things is just beyond me.

So it seems that it is being used by conservative supporters like you as a way to distract from how racist some members are.

Just look at their Rwanda policy.

It seems to be easier than spelling out all the non white ethnicities.

So enlightenment me where does there Rwanda policy state that they will only remove people of colour? Also what have you against Rwanda? Have you ever been, it's a lovely place and they are in need of workers and a country in need people willing to make a fresh start or do you have an issue with Rwandans?

apintortwo · 09/07/2022 10:16

it would be interesting to see how daily Mail / express / sun readers and its owners would react if the new leader elected was from a different culture and background

Can you explain this logic? Why does the leader need to be from a different culture and background to those they will have to represent?

Why does it have to be Rishi Sunak? What about Suella Braverman, Sajid Javid, Nadhim Zahawi or Kemi Badenoch?

If you want to go to Rwanda then I'm sure they'd welcome you. Forcing people to go who don't want to is a different matter.

Lovely try by yourself there to twist my words and meaning and deflect. Nowhere did I say such ridiculous things. Interesting that you think anyone against the Rwanda plan has an issue with Rwandans.

Have you anything to say instead about what a racist Boris is as you’ve ignored that part haven’t you.

I have extended family there, and quite happy here so what is your point?

See your dodging answering my questions too, so what is wrong with Rwanda? People always quote it as a bad thing why?

Tillsforthrills · 09/07/2022 10:23

Not sure if this has been mentioned but papers reporting that Rishi has timed his departure to make it seem like he’s outraged about the sexual harassment of Chris Pincher, when in fact it was a huge bust up with BJ over corporation tax.

Also he had bought the domain name ‘Ready for Rishi’ in December so was planning the leadership challenge.

I’m sorry, did I say anything against Rwanda or Rwandans? No I did not. You did. It is immigrants that do not want to go to Rwanda when they’re seeking safety in the UK.

Again dodging the question about BJ, I hope you’re as concerned about his open racism?

The point is if you like it and want to go there you can, if you are happy here you can stay, you have a choice. The asylum seekers who are here and want to be here aren't being given a choice, they are being told to go to Rwanda, if the stories are true about the people they tried to get on the first plane they aren't just told they are physically forced onto the plane.

This is so utterly sad.

The word which comes to my mind is repellent. To say you want the tories to elect someone non white so they lose is disgusting. The left is drowning in its own bigotry and can’t even see it.
