To think Tory party is not ready for a non-white PM

While all this talk about Rishi goes on, I just can't see it happening. Too much of the tory party is old english and super duper white

this from an independent headline - The Conservative leadership contest is dominated by white men who've furthered inequality in various departments. The winner will be chosen by a membership who are 71 per cent male, 97 per cent white and 44 per cent aged over 65

So to sum up, the British Prime Minister should have been brought up penniless by a single mother or father, gone to a state school, scrimped and saved through life just so they can empathise with a lot of the population. I personally don't care whether the PM has £1 in the bank or is a billionaire as long as they govern the country in an appropriate fashion, representing the country abroad in an appropriate fashion, being a leader, being someone people look up to and inspires people. And sorting out this mess of a country.

head, nail, hit.

We live in a world, or at least society, where everyone is a wannabe socialist and poverty is seen as a virtue. Successful people are mistrusted and low achievement somehow makes you ‘Salt of the Earth’. It’s beyond bonkers. You couldn’t make this shit up.

lljkk · 08/07/2022 22:52

I also agree that any of Sunak, Javid and Zahawi have as much chance as Hunt or Truss. Braverman spoke well when she declared, too. She lacks previous high profiles but her manner might win a lot of people over.

DS is a fervent Tory & quite likes Patel <shudder>

If Badenoch can be an MP for Saffon Waldon (96% white, rural Suffolk), Tory heartland can handle a person of colour at the helm.

Labour have only ever had white men as leaders, and as far as I can see have only ever had one non-white leadership candidate (Diane Abbott - who came last in 2010)

Both Labour and Conservatives have had jewish leaders, including one each this century, but the only PM was the Conservative Disraeli.

The SNP and Lib Dems have both appointed female leaders and the Conservatives have had two women leaders who both became PM. In recent times they have also had the youngest leader (Hague) and the youngest PM (Cameron).

5 of the 12 favourites to become Conservative leader this time are non-white.

The worst major party for ethnic diversity is the SNP. After the 2019 general election, every single one of their 48 MPs is white, and in fact every candidate in the election was white.

Do as I say, not as I do, eh?

The mantra that lefties live (and die) by.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 08/07/2022 23:00

I’m not bothered about Rishi’s background.

What bothers me most is that he is trying to make on that he is dependable and trustworthy.

Says the man who ousts his gaffer without as much as a heids up and has a slick campaign video ready.

He was happy enough to sit at the shit show table and keep his mouth shut until he could pounce.

I find that duplicitous. You would think he would have made his difference already. He did not.

I’ve no idea who could be suitable. But for me, anyone would be better than Mr Shapps. I dislike him intensely and there are a few of us up here who hold a less than favourable opinion on him.

The man is a dosser and a dwad.

And aye, Alan Partridge himself would be a better bet.

MarshaMelrose · 08/07/2022 23:05

The problem with his colour is that he is Blue!

Not for the Conservative party. I mean they're not is going to elect someone of red or gold colour, are they? Although that might be the only way either of those parties will get a PM.

RaspberryParfait · 08/07/2022 23:17

I used to be a fan of Dishy Rishi (maybe due to him giving out money during Covid, furlough etc) until I read of his hundreds of millions and 4 homes that he never has to think about how to heat, then thought why is he in government making decisions for the majority of people who pay taxes by doing proper work of the blood, sweat and tears variety. Would certainly not vote for another Tory toff. At least Starmer had a proper job before politics unlike Boris or Rishi.

I hope Patel puts her hat in the ring. We could do with another strong woman at the helm.

Haha funny. Very subtle and clever satire. The whole post.

That's awful

Looks like Sandra, 43, single mother of 6, last worked 20 years ago is going to be the best candidate for PM going on a lot of what is said here. She'll negotiate with the EU over Northern Ireland, give Putin plenty of shit over the Ukraine and will add a certain joie de vivre to the G7 and G20 summits!

That's why I'm hoping he gets the gig, tbh.

The racist element among Tory voters might be put off voting for the party, so it could increase the chances of getting rid of the lot of them.

What utter rubbish lefties do talk. Good god.

TullyApplebottom · 08/07/2022 23:38

not just rubbish, actually, but offensive. Welcoming the racism you believe to be present on the grounds it will be bad for your political opponents. Really quite repulsive, actually

Ruth Davidson would’ve got my vote all day. Shame she’s gone.

ohfook · 08/07/2022 23:47

I hate the tories but I disagree with you here. They care far more about money than skin colour. They'd have no problem being led by someone who isn't white as long as they continue to line their (and their friends') pockets.

tobee · 09/07/2022 03:12

Yay always good to get a thread with rampant whataboutery

tobee · 09/07/2022 03:13

But anyway it will be interesting to see if this is disproved

Wheretheskyisblue · 09/07/2022 05:31

10% (65) of members of the HoC are from ethic minorities. Of these 41 (63%) are Labour and just 22 are Conservatives (34%).

balalake · 09/07/2022 06:25

I think that the Tories are OK with people of Asian descent/heritage, and so that will not be a barrier to Rishi Sunak being chosen if he is perceived as being the best of the two candidates the membership are asked to vote for.

I'm not so sure about those with Afro-Caribbean or African heritage, and neither of the two women Tory leaders were chosen by the membership.

Assanctamonioysastheycome · 09/07/2022 06:39

So the great tory re-write starts. Economic and political chaos, corruption you name it. But they've already moved on and hope everyone else has too.

ChrisS36 · 09/07/2022 06:59

They have had two female leaders who served as Prime Minister (compared to the Labour Party who haven’t) and have had many white cabinet members.

Questionaboutjoboffer · 09/07/2022 07:00

MsFogi · 08/07/2022 18:56

I think the issue is that the country is not ready for a billionaire PM during a time of economic crisis with millions relying on food banks, most people panicking about energy bills, inflation and interest rate rises.

^ this

Assanctamonioysastheycome · 09/07/2022 07:08

@ChrisS36 they've also had a PM kicked out due to corruption. And who has left the country in chaos due to mismanagement, brexit etc

However the Tories have been led by a person of Jewish heritage and of course a woman. Currently it has more openly gay MPs than the Labour Party and it has a large number of South Asian and Black MPs. It still has problems with race as does the rest of UK society. However, if we judge other parties agains the Tory benchmark, it is very clear that Labour has real issues with anti-semitism. For many on the left, this form of racism is quite acceptable. Starmer to his credit is looking to sort this, but is only part way though this journey

Its odd then how this 'diverse' Tory Party elected as their leader a PM who is wholly misogynistic, refers to gay men as 'tank topped bum boys' , described Muslim women as 'pillar boxes' and black peoples having 'water melon smiles' and said 'voting Tory will cause your wife to have bigger breasts'. He even measured the appeal of his own female MP's on a 'Tottymeter'. As for his purely racist attitudes to Scots - well documented.

A grotesque man empowered by grotesque followers. His views and track record of dishonesty was known well before he was PM.

Hear hear.

fudfootedfannybangle · 09/07/2022 07:18

I can barely find the words to describe how you’re (OP) reducing POC to their race. It smacks of wanting POC to “know their place”.

im just a middle-aged white woman though and I have no time for people trying to stir up racial hatred.
