Sanitary towels are atrocious

Had DS via Section about a month ago, still bleeding on and off and can't use tampons until 6 week check so using Always towels.

Have they always been this bad?! I remember using them as a teen with no major issues but these are awful! My vagina is trying to eat them, they move constantly, they're so uncomfortable that I keep wanting to rub the area (so I probably have thrush too!) and I'm pretty sure my baby doesn't have diaper rash but I do!

Just a lighthearted rant.

Reusable are game changer. Especially cotton topped and fleece backed ones which are generally made by small independent businesses. Cheeky Wipes are cheaply made in China and not the best materials.

OP, have a look on Etsy for US makers. In the UK, TCS Eco is one great brand worth checking out. They are made in Scotland.

OTOlive · 09/07/2022 08:16

“Always” brand are dreadful. They have some sort of chemical that is drying and uncomfortable.

Bodyform is much better imo

WonderingWanda · 09/07/2022 08:36

I know everyone suggesting reusables is trying to be eco friendly but honestly a new mother does not need more washing to do.

They actually aren't that much extra work and you soon get into a routine with them.

I mean obviously if its not for you then fine no ones forcing anyone. But fir anyone reading who's thinking about it and contemplating the work load then know it's not actually that bad.

Less time ( depending where you live anyway ) than attempting to source your brand when the shop stocks of everything are so temperamental at the moment

BiscoffSundae · 09/07/2022 10:52

I got reusable ones for my daughter to wear to school (she has asd) and I was told not to put them on her because they are “unhygienic” so had to go back to the normal ones. Was a waste of money buying them all.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 09/07/2022 12:04

I hate sanitary towels these days, they're so plasticky and itchy and sweaty. When I was younger they were made from natural materials and were much more breathable and comfy.

Was that by a teacher? I'd hope not. Reusable products are addressed in sex ed arent they? They were in dd2s yr5 lesson anyway.in fact the teacher showed dds to the class ( clean and unused, part of the kit you obviously provide for your dds when they hit that age just in case )

Some of the schemes schools sign up for providing free products also provide Reusable items.

One would hope the kids had been taught about them.

If it was a teacher I'd be complaining fir sure.

It it was a kid well...they should have just minded their own business. For some they work better and dont cause the reactions. Sad that they are still so ignorant about it all. As if sitting on a beach amongs washed up tampons is more hygienic

Her 1:1 told me, she has an intimate care plan and requires help with changing them so they did not want me to send in reusable ones and yes she said “because they are unhygienic” I was really surprised and felt a bit embarrassed at being told they are unhygienic as I bought them thinking she would find them easier with it being fabric due to sensory issues.

Whatwouldscullydo · 09/07/2022 12:39

I would actually complain. They are not unhygienic. You washed them and know exactly where they have been. And they do not contain any ingredients like the bleach that cause allergic reactions.

What an absolutely shockingly ignorant comment

QuestionableMouse · 09/07/2022 12:54

Does she mean the used ones are unhygienic? Must admit, carrying them round when they're wet have me the ick a bit, and it was my own blood! (and yes I had a proper wet bag and such!)

BiscoffSundae · 09/07/2022 13:01

She said they are unhygienic and only to send her in disposable. I’m sure if dd could manage it herself she wouldn’t care what I sent her in but as she needs help they want disposable, they were all brand I spent a lot of money on them. It was a while ago now and I didn’t complain as I felt embarrassed that they are considered unhygienic.

Whatwouldscullydo · 09/07/2022 13:08

What will that 1:1 do when she cares for another disabled child who wears period pants as they are the easiest option that the child can manage.

1Dandelion1 · 09/07/2022 13:11

Always are just awful in general (scented/plastic), these days i use overnight pad from a brand called Cottons on my worst days and Love Luna pants on my lighter days

LeSquigh · 09/07/2022 14:44

Yes, I am with you too. I think in your case maternity pads would be a better option but towels are hideous. The cheaper the better in most cases, Kotex or own brand. Always do some some organic ones which need changing more often because they fall apart easier but are much nicer than the standard ones. I also think normal Always and also Bodyform are very plastic coated.

Marvellousmadness · 09/07/2022 14:47

You are still bleeding 4 weeks in? You should get checked .
Use period panties btw vs pads. Much nicer

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/07/2022 14:53

Are Kotex still around, they're great pp?

I bled for weeks after a section, nothing untoward.

houseargh · 10/07/2022 08:31

Once I ran out of maternity pads I used big fat kotex towels as they were what they had at the corner shop and they were great. Much softer than Always and Bodyform though I wouldn't use them in normal life as so bulky

This is quite normal I think!
I had twins and a section and bled for 8 weeks I think!!

I work in a special needs school. I would object to the 1:1 complaining. We have children/teenagers with reusable nappies.

As long as there is a wet/dry bag to send them home safely .

skybluee · 21/07/2022 21:55

Pads are what made me literally hate my period.
