Sanitary towels are atrocious

HannahsLife · 08/07/2022 16:32

Had DS via Section about a month ago, still bleeding on and off and can't use tampons until 6 week check so using Always towels.

Have they always been this bad?! I remember using them as a teen with no major issues but these are awful! My vagina is trying to eat them, they move constantly, they're so uncomfortable that I keep wanting to rub the area (so I probably have thrush too!) and I'm pretty sure my baby doesn't have diaper rash but I do!

Just a lighthearted rant.

I think they are fine, I can’t use tampons and not had any issues using pads everyone is different 🤷‍♀️

Same here. Post menopause and found tampons too painful to use.
Used cheapest sanitary towels with no problems.

Bleeding not blessings😂….sadly I’m no vicar😁

😁 I was reading that wondering if "blessing" was a euphemism for "period" that I'd somehow missed! My gran used to call it "the curse" or "Eve's curse" so I assumed "blessings" was similar!

When I was at school some of our sex ed classes were sponsored by Always (including lots of info about disposable pads, a brief mention of tampons, and nothing about reusables) and they gave out free samples so I suppose things like that have helped them to build such a large market share, as well as buying most of the shelf space in shops. I'm a convert to period pants now and no longer use Always except for the occasional Always Infinity.

GalactatingGoddess · 08/07/2022 19:24

Always are shocking, just realised today how awful they are. Never buying them again. Sticky and plasticky in this heat.

I've tried Lil let's before and they have been quite nice and soft but I think I'll see what recommendations this thread comes up with

MissMaple82 · 08/07/2022 19:28

Always aren't really meant for post pregnancy. You need soft padded maternity ones

elderlyhippo · 08/07/2022 19:33

Kotex - the big soft ones - are brilliant post-natally. I found that a bit of bulk didn't matter when I was still in comfy/baggy/whatever I could fit in to

I can only guess they were designed by a man who hates women and has only read about a ‘period’ in a teen novel

The scent/freshness systems weren't designed for period products. They were developed for inco products, and then tried out in other products. And presumably kept because people actually but the things

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/07/2022 20:10

They are horrendous. I was caught short once without my reusable ones and had to use one. Horrendous. Last time I was away and forgot to bring some I bought period pants from primark. Only £12 for 3 pairs.

Mookie81 · 08/07/2022 20:30

Period pants, period pants, period pants!
I use Modibodi maxi/24 hr ones. Panel from front to back, no leaks at all.
Comfy and nice looking with a bit of lace on the waistband. I had a really heavy period a few months ago and it kept everything in, no tampons.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 08/07/2022 20:53

I don't get on with period pants at all, they just feel uncomfortable and damp, tbf I feel the same about pads.
I use a mooncup and have reusable pads and period pants for back up, but I really don't like them alone.

That's a lot of period pant! I have those and they're brilliant but would only wear them overnight, they're like a nappy. I use others from the Modibodi range during the day.

ShirleyPhallus · 08/07/2022 22:11

Absolute LOL at using a pair of socks instead of a pad 😁

TripleSeptic · 08/07/2022 22:11

Fond memories of the reassuring comfort of Kotex. Like a pillow in my pants, comfy and secure, one in the traditional spot, and one stuck to the front of my pants, to take the pressure off my csection incision. Tip from my lovely SIL ❤️

RealBecca · 08/07/2022 22:16

Horrendous. I thoroughly recommend handmade cloth ones. Try etsy. They can be tailored to shape and flow. Or a facebook group for "Cloth Sanotary Pads (CSP)

Iba · 08/07/2022 22:50

I've used Always for 25 years or so and not had a problem.

I think I had a free sample of Bodyform once or twice over the years and didn't like it but can't remember why.
All this pro Bodyform chat is making me think ill try them again though...

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 08/07/2022 22:58

Tena unscented are brilliant.
Very thin and you don't realise you're wearing them.

Verbena87 · 08/07/2022 23:02

@QuestionableMouse the fern washable pads are loads thinner than my other brands - slightly wish I’d tried them first tbh. Might be worth a try if you can find one on offer somewhere - they’re really soft too. I’ve not had blisters on my bits but one of the cheaper brands of washables chafed my inner thighs like an absolute motherfucker - fern and bloom & Nora (which I like but they are thick) don’t.

QuestionableMouse · 08/07/2022 23:06

@Verbena87 thanks, will have a look for those! I really wanted to like them but I was so sore 😣

allboysherebutme · 08/07/2022 23:10

I don't have periods anymore, but I switched to Tena pads when I had periods. They're far more absorbent and are designed to stop odours too. X

Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 08/07/2022 23:19

Sanitary towels alway seem to stick to my arse. Hate them with a passion

heyitsthistle · 08/07/2022 23:21

Another vote for Bodyform. I hated Always, not that I've had a period in many years (baby after baby, haha).

When they return I'm going to go for period pants, like Modibodi.

Wavygravy1 · 08/07/2022 23:23

I hate pads full stop, i always leak and can’t stand the wet feeling 🤢

allboysherebutme · 08/07/2022 23:36

If do not want to try my previous suggestion eco by naty. X

Foldingchair · 08/07/2022 23:53

I've used Always forever. Never had an issue. Use dtesco maternity ones after birth, then back to Always. I like the wings.

CactusBlossom · 09/07/2022 01:36

Maternity pads are for just this situation. How on earth women coped before manufactured sanitary protection I shudder to think! Washing cloths by hand every month -- no thank you! Do you have a health visitor or district nurse? Perhaps you could have a word with them (or your GP) whether there is something they recommend (or even prescribe) to help in the way of pads.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 09/07/2022 01:43

BloodyHellKen · 08/07/2022 16:55

Try period pants (eg WUKA are great) @HannahsLife . Honestly you'll never look back. I think they are amazing :)

I tried some, I really want to get on with them, but by Christ, they STINK. It's the most repulsive smell ever when they get 'used'. I've tried everything. Sad It's sort of built up in the fabric. Vile. So had to give up.

Aishah231 · 09/07/2022 06:35

Reusable ones cause me many fewer problems than the horrible plasticy types. Plus they won't be hanging around for the next 1000 years.
