Prom Dress Disaster

Sorry, this might be long as to not drip feed. Apologies but could really do with some advice.

Ordered a prom dress for my daughter. Paid around one third deposit. Dress arrived in the shop the week before prom date. Went to try on and collect, but dress was too big. Seamstress made some alterations and said it would be done in time, they were working through alterations in order of prom date and to keep an eye out for an email.

Around lunchtime the day before prom, I got a text from the prom shop saying they were delivering the dresses and asking what was the latest time they could deliver that night or from what time the next morning, so I said up to 10.30pm and from 6.30am next morning.

Got a text early the next morning saying the seamstress had collapsed overnight and gone into hospital and they were trying to find another seamstress but not to worry, the dress would be there ASAP.

I told them I needed the dress by 4pm latest as daughter was having friends round to get ready/photos, then being picked up by another mum to go to a pre prom party/photos before leaving at 6pm to go to the prom.

Eventually, after a couple of messages and a phone call, the prom lady turns up with dress at 5pm. She asked my daughter to try the dress on to make sure it fitted. I was more worried that the dress would be too small now that it had been altered, so when she got it on and it wasn't too small I said it was fine and I could tighten it in with the corset . We were so relieved she had a dress. At that moment the other mum turned up to take them to the preprom party so the prom lady left.

The mum at the preprom party messaged and said the dress was too big and she had tried to pin it in but the dress was still gaping round the chest area and too big round the waist. My daughter spent the whole night miserable in a dress that was too big and is sad when she sees all the photos of the girls looking beautiful in their lovely prom dresses. My daughter is not a promzilla is is the sweetest laid back girl.

I have now had a phone message and an email asking for the balance. I really feel that I dont want to pay for a dress that doesn't fit and ruined my daughter's evening. I want to give the dress back so they can resell it.

IABU - yes the dress was worn
IANBU - it wasn't my fault, the dress didn't fit.

@WimbyAce - Hallowe'en is the anglicised version of Samhain which in Irish is the month of November. The last day of October is the eve (e'en) of November so Hallowe'en.

www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z9s78hv/articles/zr4hhbk

Hallowe'enIt's very much a Celtic (with a hard C not a soft one like the Scottish football club) tradition that migrated to the US and I'd say that Hallmark took it as a suitable holiday/tradition to market and boy have they done a good job of it.

All Souls day is the 1st October = All Hallows'' Day hence Hallow E'en.
Prom is horrible and at 16 it would be the Junior Prom in the US.
Not usually as big a deal as the Senior Prom.

Did ever get a reply OP? Did you get any money back?

Promdisaster · 28/09/2022 09:25

@Spottingtwerps
No, after I sent the text telling them to respond only by email, I haven't heard back from them at all. I promise to update if I do ever hear from them.

I think you will need to pursue more vigorously if you hope to ever get anything out of them. They will be hoping you just go away. Please do update. This thread has stuck in my mind.

@Spottingtwerps
I wasn't trying to get a refund. I had only paid around a third deposit with the balance to be paid when I picked the dress up. But because the dress was dropped off, they sent an email a few days later asking me to pay the rest of the balance. That was when I asked on here if I should pay as the dress hadn't actually fitted properly.

100% don’t pay
you have explained your stance and directed them by text to that email.

only other option is to write to them or bite them bullet and phone back to explain.

they could potentially take it to small claims but doubt they will as they didn’t deliver the service you paid for.

NCTDN · 28/09/2022 22:16

I don't think you'll ever hear from them again if you've not by now. So overall you're a winner as that email obviously had some effect!

Spottingtwerps · 30/09/2022 06:40

Ah well, I had forgotten the exact details of that. In that case, well done! Looks like you're a winner

Simone91x · 17/03/2023 20:49

What was the outcome? Deleting old emails and found this thread x

Promdisaster · 18/03/2023 16:29

@Simone91x
I didn't hear anything back from them after sending the email asking them to reply only by emails. I didn't want to jinx it by coming on here and saying it but it's been almost 8 months now so fingers crossed.

Final final deadline that was self imposed and waaaaaay before the ACTUAL prom started.

don’t be ridiculous, pay for the dress.

ffs

Don't be ridiculous, read the lady's post. It was delivered an hour later than agreed and a couple of hours before the event started, (and indeed during the time that this young girl should have been getting ready with her friends, which is half of the fun).

Re insurance, I can't imagine that they'd do this sort of work without business insurance, but that isn't your problem. They didn't fulfill the contract.

I've just realised that this is an old thread. You received extremely poor service. I hope that you got a refund.
