To reduce the number of showers I have each week

Let's be honest here. During lockdown probably most of us that worked from home rolled out of bed to their laptop and started the work day (in pjs)

I believe my need for showers daily took a nose dive. Don't get me wrong I went old school and did a daily clean with a flannel and yes still brush my teeth twice a day. I was showering twice a week.

Now back into the swing of things, working face to face (twice a week) I find my routine has stayed the same and the need for daily showers has gone. Obviously if I go work out I will do but I'm talking daily no.

What's other people's experience? Has everyone resumed normal life or are there people out there like me who are now content doing a flannel wash instead of a daily shower????

I am waiting for the gross comments but honestly I don't feel worse for it and my water bill has dropped!

I don't understand the flannel wash thing tbh. If you're worried about wasting water, why not just turn the shower on briefly, soap yourself, turn it pack on and rinse? Surely much less drippy, messy and annoying than the flannel thing?

Daily showers are just totally unnecessary.

Not necessary (from either a health or hygiene pov), just preferable imo.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 08/07/2022 18:31

There is a huge difference between people who shower every few days for dry skin or thick hair reasons etc but make themselves presentable and smell fresh compared to shower dodgers whose fortnightly wash takes 3 minutes.
People who shower every other day don't stink.

I'd love thick hair that didn't go limp and look greased within 24 hours.

If i had that hair I'd never steam shower I'd enjoy days of good hair.

@Milly2016 because I’m lazy, don't’ want to get my long hair wet and my shower door is broken 😂

Not everyone's shower runs from the combi boiler. I have an electric shower that heats the water and it costs more than using the combi boiler.

I know not everyone has a combi boiler. I wasnt asking the question for them, I was asking the question for me. I have a combi boiler

It’s not that your need for daily showers has gone, it’s that you are accustomed to your own scent.

way back before we were aggressively advertised to, and sold the idea that we had to be squeaky clean at all times, we didn’t bathe so much and thought we were fine. That’s because everyone was the same. We are now very used to everyone smelling fresh and clean.

I work closely near people and, even in a mask, it really is noticeable who doesn’t have freshly washed hair and who doesn’t bathe as often as you’d hope. Sorry!

Freshly washed hair? My hair would be dreadful if I washed it every time I had a shower. It certainly isn't dirty and it most definitely does not smell unpleasant.

lljkk · 08/07/2022 22:06

I have done the rank thing for years. People don't avoid me.

ThinWomansBrain · 08/07/2022 22:13

I prefer baths to showers - and generally don't have time for a lengthy soak every day, maybe twice a week, flannel wash/bidet in between.

Belephant · 08/07/2022 22:21

I'm very convinced that some people smell worse than others. I'm thinking back to D of E at school - we were traipsing round mountains in an awful hot summer and we didn't have access to a shower for the first two nights. I remember some people smelled awful and others just didn't smell at all. In my very close knit group of friends we would check each other to see how we smelled as we didn't want to go near the boys we fancied at the campsite in the evening if we were smelly 🤣

I think some people just need more regular bathing than others, which is why they can't get their head around other people not doing it as often.

bellac11 · 08/07/2022 22:25

Theres a lot of people getting very defensive on here about the word 'smell'

Yes unwashed hair has a smell, just like washed hair has a smell. Its a fact, they smell different and thats what is meant by 'I can smell when someone hasnt washed their hair that morning'. It has a different odour to hair that has been washed.

For some people that might be offputting or unpleasant, for many others its just a smell they pick up, like if I had just had a polo to eat or a cheese and onion sandwich, things smell, they have scent to them. If I come back from the swimming baths and still have a chloriney smell about me.

Fuzzyhippo · 08/07/2022 22:28

I only shower if I'm going somehwere or will be coming into contact with others. But I'm going through a depressive episode and even the most basic self care is a struggle which I'm sure alot can relate to at the moment

I’d totally agree. I believe a group of people could do the same wash and use the same deodorant and within hours or maybe even nearly straight away have a smell you’d move away from. I have 2 teenage boys, one gets sweaty but the other smells funky nearly no matter what

JiminyGlick · 08/07/2022 23:04

My good friend showers before bed then goes to work the next day having merely splashed water onto her face and brushed her teeth.

I sometimes sit with her on the train. She absolutely does not smell of BO, but she also does not smell exactly fresh.

I was told how nice my hair smelled today.it was last washed on Tuesday. So what do you class as 'unwashed'?

Same here. I hate showering too. I hate being naked, and I hate being wet. it just seems like a huge faff.

antelopevalley · 08/07/2022 23:28

What people mean is the smell of perfumes from soap and shampoo.

You're doing exactly what Ive said above, completely missing what is meant by smell and unwashed.

Its not washed is it? You havent washed it since Tuesday. The person who liked the smell of your hair likes that smell as they complimented you for it.

What is it you dont understand about that?

An example I can best think of, I wear perfume every day, I wear a different one every day. I usually wear the same hair band all the time, its a fabric type. It smells of a combination of hair spray, shampoo, conditioner, perfumes, I never wash it, never any need to. I love the smell of it, its not clean or washed but has as smell I like, someone else might think its unpleasant.

So it smells and its unwashed.

You know that many/most Black people choose not to wash their hair every day?

soupmaker · 08/07/2022 23:41

I showered every morning without fail before lockdown for years. During the first lockdown I showered every second day and only washed my hair twice a week. What a revelation. The skin on my arms and legs is so much better, it was always dry and flaky before. My hair is in much better condition and considerably less frizzy. I've stopped the daily shower and just clean and moisturise my face every morning and night. Clean flannel every day for pits and bits. My skin and hair so much happier. But, each to their own.

Well my hair isn't unwashed. It was washed on Tuesday. Just because it wasn't washed today doesn't mean it isn't washed. If I'd gone a week then yes maybe I'd say it was unwashed. But when my hair still smells of shampoo then I'll argue it's clean

mjf981 · 09/07/2022 03:31

I shower daily. I don't even really know what a flannel wash is - are you just wiping yourself all over with a damp towel? Do you use soap and then try to wipe it off?

! Black people/curly/kinky haired people have drier hair. The boys often have very short hair and girls have protective styles. It doesn't get greasy, so it naturally doesn't need as much washing. Sorry, but straight hair needs to be washed more, that has nothing to do with us. Straight hair going a week without washing will look greasy compared to someone with kinky hair having their hair plaited.

Sosiej · 09/07/2022 07:27

And every black person I know showers every day even though hair isn't washed. With soap.

OTOlive · 09/07/2022 08:07

I’ve always showered once or twice a day. I also did my hair and make up every day of lockdown 😂

MIL always flannel washes when she visits. I think it a) takes forever when a shower can take 2 minutes and b) I hate that she uses my flannels to do it 🤢
