To reduce the number of showers I have each week

Let's be honest here. During lockdown probably most of us that worked from home rolled out of bed to their laptop and started the work day (in pjs)

I believe my need for showers daily took a nose dive. Don't get me wrong I went old school and did a daily clean with a flannel and yes still brush my teeth twice a day. I was showering twice a week.

Now back into the swing of things, working face to face (twice a week) I find my routine has stayed the same and the need for daily showers has gone. Obviously if I go work out I will do but I'm talking daily no.

What's other people's experience? Has everyone resumed normal life or are there people out there like me who are now content doing a flannel wash instead of a daily shower????

I am waiting for the gross comments but honestly I don't feel worse for it and my water bill has dropped!

If I’m honest, I don’t shower daily if I’m not going out at all that day but I shower most days

Aussiegirl123456 · 08/07/2022 07:07

Personally I feel gross if I don’t shower daily, but you do what works for you and makes you happy.

YesitsJacqueline · 08/07/2022 07:11

I don't really care how many times a week you shower OP, but I probably wouldn't sit next to you on the bus!

RustyShackleford3 · 08/07/2022 07:13

I shower after a workout, which happens roughly 4 times a week. Occasionally I'm unwell so I don't work out at all, and in those cases I would shower at home, but definitely not every day.

I also take baths whenever I feel like it/have time. It could be only once in a week, it could 5 times.

So some weeks I shower 4 times and bathe 5 times, and other weeks I might only shower 2 times and bathe once.

Everything seems to be fine. I don't think I smell. I have a VERY blunt husband who would have no issues telling me if he could smell me.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 08/07/2022 07:23

I love these threads Grin

I'm a dog walker and work outside for 4-5 hours a day so daily showers are a necessity for me. The same applies to DH who is a plasterer and comes home head to toe in dust!

I'm also one of those people that feels really grubby without a shower but each to their own 🤷🏻‍♀️

Why would I worry about not being able to shower in the extremely unlikely case I am cast as a family member in The Impossible?

Once again I never suggested anyone should "worry". My original comment was supposed to be lighthearted, and just pointing out that the people who seem to think the world would end if they don't have a daily shower would not be able to cope if something happened and they couldn't do so!!!! Don't you understand humour in the UK?

Incidentally, some of us live in parts of the world where these things can, and have, happened so we realise that life doesn't always go according to plan.

Of course I understand humour - I was employing it back at you to show how your clever little comment made no sense. Do you really think the reason people wouldn’t cope in a natural disaster is because they couldn’t have their lovely shower? Nobody has said they’d die without it. They’ve said they like a daily shower. Bringing up natural disasters to try to make a point is making you look silly.

If you're slim without skin folds and rolls, don't sweat and have a clean diet without meat and alcohol to cause odour, have most of your body protected from external dirt by your clothes; how can any part of you other than intimate areas become dirty and smelly within 24 hours in our usually temperate climate?
Sometimes hormones or illness can be to blame, but mostly needing to wash daily to avoid smelling bad is down to lifestyle choices. Which is fine, shower every day if your lifestyle means you smell otherwise. But there's no reason to judge people who make different choices, and so don't need to.

jollymollygoesdancing · 08/07/2022 07:39

Lol I just want to support your relaxed wash routine! I am the same. I just don’t have the time I did pre baby. And I know people will be horrified! But as a greasy teenager I showered and washed hair everyday. But honestly I feel this did more harm than good. I now wash every other day, wash hair twice a week. I feel this is average! Obvs wash if required if I’ve had a particularly sweaty day! Each to their own but back in the day people washed far less and they were fine!

Spanielservant · 08/07/2022 07:40

I have a bath in the morning every day, then a shower at the gym then 9 times out of 10, a bath before bed. It's not just about being clean, it's self care. I am not sure how me doing that could be a list, I don't have the slightest interest in what other people do, some of my favourite patients ever smelled of wee.

Spanielservant · 08/07/2022 07:40

*ablist

Washing yourself is obviously not ablist. It's ablist when people believe that 'jumping in the shower" is quick and easy for everyone, so if you don't you're lazy.
Dismissing other washing methods as inadequate is also ablist as it's saying that anyone who can't shower daily must automatically be dirty and smell.

Primatrying · 08/07/2022 07:51

I shower every day, but I know I don't need to. It would be better for the environment if everyone did what you do. I did cut down on showers for environmental reasons a few years ago for a while. But I like them.

In response to the person who said you can tell if someone doesn't have freshly washed hair - I wash mine once a week. It doesn't smell. Washing it every day would make it a dry frizzy mess.

Yeah you would. Because there would be fuck all wrong with op and you wouldn't tell. God these threads bring out twats

Matildahoney · 08/07/2022 07:57

I was brought up having a bath once a week & a strip wash every day & I'm in my 30s. I have multiple friends & their kids who just get up, get dressed & leave the house (which I could never do!) It's not unclean to not shower or bath daily soap and water do exactly the same as running water and soap!! Same concoction, different format.

You would think as this is anonymous people would be honest 🤔

People on here lie about anything. I wouldn't be surprised if some lied about how often they shower, although it is very weird.

Fuwari · 08/07/2022 08:15

I was bemused recently when staying with a friend, as she showered daily but then wore the same clothes for 5 days in a row! And some of those days were hot. I personally couldn’t bear getting out of a shower all clean and then putting on dirty clothes.

I bath or shower every other day then fresh clean clothes (of course change underwear daily). I wfh so it works for me. If I am going out and about then I do shower that day. Yesterday I was out in London and it was hot. When I got home my outfit went straight in the wash basket. Some people would have hung the outfit back in the wardrobe as it wasn’t visibly dirty. But I’d sweated, sat on the dirty tube seats etc. That to me is more “grim” than skipping a shower.

How would you know? Would you ask her how often she showered before you sat down? 🤣

Glitternails1 · 08/07/2022 08:29

I shower every night. I can’t sleep otherwise. I want to wash off the day, no matter what I’ve done that day.

CulturePigeon · 08/07/2022 08:35

I'd have to have a daily shower (or bath), but I get your concern about he water bill. Just have a 1 minute shower.

I know the propaganda says that showers are more economical than baths with water, but it depends what kind of shower and what kind of bath. I have 'wartime' baths and I'm in and out very quickly - just don't get the wallowing for ages thing - I want to get it over and get on with my day. My children have 10 minute showers plus hair-washing and I bet they use 5 times as much water as my bath!!!

Autienotnaughtie · 08/07/2022 08:35

I shower every other day unless needed due to exercise etc.

Depends on your lifestyle doesn’t it, your location and your age too I think. Living in a grimy city you get pollution on your hair and clothes and skin. Commuting on trains can be a grubby experience. If you work on the land or with animals, you certainly need to wash daily. Ditto an old fashioned factory. And if you are a woman with birth injuries or post menopause and leak a little urine, which quite a few women do, you definitely need to wash once or more daily. And when you are elderly, and your liver doesn’t function as well, you are definitely prone to smelling a bit more than young children for example. I hope that doesn’t come across as ageist as I am no spring chicken myself. I definitely think everyone needs to “see soap” at least once every 24 hrs. Thin people included!

Underroad · 08/07/2022 08:54

I shower every day. I don’t necessarily think that it’s gross if you don’t but I feel uncomfortable if I don’t - everything just feels a bit sticky and wrong. I’ve managed to wean myself off of washing my hair every day though and do it every 2-3 days now unless I’ve exercised - after exercise it has to be washed as it’s so sweaty.

"the price of a 10-minute shower between 69p and £1.88".

metro.co.uk/2022/04/13/how-much-does-it-cost-to-take-a-shower-16445932/

So between 20p and 55p for a 3-minute shower.

I’ve read on here people treating the shower like a vertical bath, staying in there 20 minutes, listening to podcasts and stuff.

I’ve read on here people treating the shower like a vertical bath, staying in there 20 minutes, listening to podcasts and stuff.

My showers typically last ten minutes or so. I have very thick hair and it takes ages to get the shampoo out (and no, I'm not using too much!)

So showering every day could cost me over £30 a month!

I know I don't smell - I'd soon hear about it if I did, either from a family member or from someone at work!

Tabbouleh · 08/07/2022 09:43

Don't the flannels take a lot of washing? If you have a 4 member family all flannel washing most days...
