To not walk the dog?

Feelfreetocallme · 06/07/2022 13:43

My DH expects me to walk the dog so he can nap on his lunch break instead. I work afew days a week and the rest my time is spent with dd who is only just a toddler. I could in theory take ddog when dd is napping but she’s not a reliable napper so that could mean poor dog doesn’t get a walk until 5pm or I have to juggle them both in the rain. Aibu to expect DH to sack off the nap and take ddog out?

Again how is looking after a toddler and keeping a house not considered work? I do my paid job 2-3 times a week.

How is looking after a toddler not considered work? I work a job 2-3 days a week also. It’s a very active job too, no sitting at a desk for me.

It's not comparable to paid employment where you're restricted with what you can do and when, though.

If you're off work then you should be walking the dog, not expecting your DH to work a full day and miss his lunch break!

Arthursmom · 06/07/2022 16:26

Can dog walker just come on a Friday too? Surely that would solve the problem if the naps are needed. Alternatively can someone walk dog early morning for a short walk then after 5 for a longer walk?

WifeMotherWorkRepeat · 06/07/2022 16:35

You are both being unreasonable.
Unless you are both in your 80’s I’m not sure why daily naps are required! I’m sure what you describe as tiredness is actually lethargy from having so much rest!

Having a dog is work as well though, and you need to be sharing this as you share the parenting.

so many nap haters here! I love naps. I’ve always been a day napper. Loads of my friends who wfh nap in the day too! (Full disclosure, I have chronic fatigue, but my napping friends don’t)

LaurieFairyCake · 06/07/2022 16:42

All go to bed for a nap - including dog Flowers

And get a dog Walker every day in the morning - or a couple more days a week

Wolfiefan · 06/07/2022 16:55

Buy you can combine the job of looking after a child with walking the dog. He can’t do his job and walk the dog at the same time.
you both wanted the dog. The responsibility doesn’t go away because you have a child.

Annoyingkidsmusic · 06/07/2022 17:08

@TedMullins chronic fatigue is entirely different though. If there are no health issues… then 2 fully grown adults with only 1 toddler should really be able to get through the day without needing a nap. I cannot imagine the the threads to come if Op & her dh go on to have more children

Wow what job does he have where you don’t have to work and you can both be napping during the day and still making enough money to happily throw away money to pay for a dog walker because you need a break from walking your own dog once a day! I’m just jealous.

theres no way he needs a nap at lunch if he’s healthy so he is BU to expect one
but you aren’t working and you aren’t walking the dog and you’re still fitting in time for a nap, so you’re also BU

cant you split it? Even if Ddog gets 15/20 from you if you struggle to wrangle DC then a separate walk later on I’m sure they would appreciate it

I do work.

We both wanted to dog. I love walking her, I would walk her all day if I could but not with a toddler. He has diabetes but otherwise fine. I have suffered very badly from fatigue in the past but latest bloods were ok (well I got referred for a colonoscopy but I’ve had it and all ok). I guess we’re just both tired. I go to bed early cause I know how tired I get, he stays up.

Walking is a very healthy activity

IsThisReallyAcceptable · 06/07/2022 18:00

I think it's ridiculous that either of you need to nap during the day when your kid is sleeping through. But I don't think you can hog all the naps so you need to share dog walking and napping evenly.

Ansarima · 06/07/2022 18:04

My suggestion would be that he walks the dog when you are at work and he is instead wfh.
And you walk the dog when you are wfh (meaning taking care of your kid at home). I think it is fair.

Teder · 06/07/2022 18:50

You need to do an equal number of naps and dog walks. Otherwise healthy young adults don’t need to nap, it’s a choice but you can’t choose not to walk the dog. It should be shared equally of course.

Yerroblemom1923 · 06/07/2022 18:55

When I'm dog sitting (and also working) I walk dd for a short functional walk in morning 6/7am (1 mile or so) a proper exercise walk around lunch time /afternoon (3 + miles) and another short functional 1 mile walk before bed around 9/10pm. Dogs are a commitment. If your dh is wfh I don't see why he can't walk it during the day.
I love a nap but due to a full time job/life/dog sitting am restricted to a Saturday afternoon power nap.

Junipercrumble · 06/07/2022 22:07

How much sleep are you getting OP?
If you're only getting 4 or 5 hours per night, this would explain why you feel so tired.

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/07/2022 23:06

You both got the dog, you both walk the dog. Share it out.

And take some time to teach the dog to walk nicely next to the pram - you can do some of that at home by treating her for standing next to the pram, walking next to it around the living room or garden, drop treats on the floor by your leg so she realises THATS where to be to get the goodies.

YABU but its both of you, for not training the dog, for not recognising its both your responsibility, and for not grasping that diabetes can make you REALLY bloody knackered!

Goldencarp · 06/07/2022 23:12

Gobsmacked anyone has time to nap during the day!

Catterpillarwithconverse · 01/01/2023 14:13

Ive never owned a dog so sorry for not knowing this but why can't you take the dog for a walk with the toddler in a push chair?

Every day that my toddler isn't at nursery I go for a walk with him.
