'Kyrgios charged with common assault'

www.skysports.com/share/12646207

Combined with his on court behaviour including spitting at a fan and ignoring rules and decency.

Or does the fact that his draws interest and thus money mitigate his behaviour?

YABU he should be allowed to play

YANBU he should be removed from the Competition.

I can't vote for some reason but YANBU. I was just thinking the same, he should be disqualified.

SavoirFlair · 05/07/2022 13:55

Wimbledon is in danger of becoming some sort of global moral weathervane the way people are carrying on.

First Russian players (who don't play under the flag or federation, they play for themselves) are banned. Now, we're asking for someone who has been charged with a possible offence thousands of miles away, to be suspended from a tournament while he's in the middle of it.

YABU. If you don't like his histrionics, that's fine. But his on-court behaviour is the responsibility of the tournament organisers - they've dealt with that (or not as the case may be). This new charge of common assault is something that will be dealt with in a court of law.

Comefromaway · 05/07/2022 13:56

The organisers should make a decision if and when he is actually convicted.

GerryAtrick · 05/07/2022 13:57

The tennis player is a knob but do you say the same about anyone working at Tesco or McDonalds?

VladmirsPoutine · 05/07/2022 13:57

Yanbu but on a separate issue what is it about tennis journalists that makes them all genuinely appear like immigration officers questioning your right to be in the country. The journalist who questioned him about his red trainers and that other one who asked Venus Williams the most ridiculous question. Something very wrong with them. Good thing Venus didn't tell him to piss off.

Redbone · 05/07/2022 13:59

Absolutely agree. Kyrios is a vile, self- centered twat. He deserves to be kicked out of Wimbledon. I would love to see Nadal or even Djokavic thrash him on the court. That would shut him up!

Tennis journalists are notoriously awkward - and not in a self-consciously funny way either. Because their sport can be a bit of a Cinderella on the back pages, they're desperate to find some sort of angle to get themselves some column inches.

Which is why the tournament and the press around it should be thanking their lucky stars for Kyrgios every single day. Without him I doubt the casual viewer would be excited by Jannik Sinner, Cameron Norrie, or David Goffin, fine players though they are.

Similarly in the women's game, thank heavens for the wonderful Ons Jabeur and her personality and skill.

riesenrad · 05/07/2022 14:02

Being charged is not the same as convicted.
So no, it isn't relevant yet. If and when he is convicted, the authorities can take a view.

And for the record, I think Russian nationals should have been allowed to play. If the UK government had refused visas, that would have been a different story. But it wasn't down to the tennis authorities to make that call.

He deserves to be kicked out due to aggregated perceived offences you have levied against him? That seems arbitrary at best.

His personality is noxious for sure. But he has to have crossed a line and then be punished for it by the tournament organisers.
Who like I said, are desperate I'm sure for him to go deep into the tournament as the rest of the ATP snoozefest isn't exactly lighting up the back pages, and Nadal and Djokovic are currently sonambulating through their halves of the draw.

PoshSpice2 · 05/07/2022 14:03

What does common assault have to do with someone’s talent?
clearly the aggressive nature helps him on the court let him play.

Scianel · 05/07/2022 14:04

I'd rather see him barred than the Russian players who whos nationality is something entirely outwith their control and no fault of theirs.

AndNorrieDancing · 05/07/2022 14:14

In other sports being charged results in being dropped from the team.

MandSStoreManager · 05/07/2022 14:14

Being charged means he’s been accused. He’s not been found guilty.

So yes, he should continue to

MandSStoreManager · 05/07/2022 14:14

_play at Wimbledon.

StrawberriesAndCreamPlease · 05/07/2022 14:20

Yes, he should continue. As much as I think he’s an attention seeking twonk.

Lonelygal22 · 05/07/2022 14:24

He’s an outstanding tennis player and good entertainment. I don’t see the problem here, it’s only common assault. Perhaps this anger is what makes him so fierce on the court, and that’s something we should be grateful for.

AndNorrieDancing · 05/07/2022 14:46

only common assault

Yes only a charge for domestic violence after attacking his ex girlfriend.

I can't believe the excuses, why should we be grateful he can't control his anger. Can you imagine this being allowed anywhere else.

What do you think would happen if a supermarket employee spat at a customer?

OP posts:
Leftbutcameback · 05/07/2022 14:46

i think he should be treated more harshly because of his on court behaviour. But he’s not the only one. Just because the crowd like bad boys (and it’s always the male players) doesn’t mean the staff on court should have to put up with it.

AnneLovesGilbert · 05/07/2022 14:49

He’s revolting. I watched most of the match yesterday and he’s so aggressive and unpleasant. The commentators lovingly referred to as a “bad boy” when he’s a thug.

bigbluebus · 05/07/2022 14:49

I'd be surprised if there was anything in Wimbledon rules that forbid him from playing even if he's found guilty.
As far as his behaviour on court goes, Wimbledon has been dealing with this sort of shenanigans for decades - John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Andy Roddick

AndNorrieDancing · 05/07/2022 14:51

Left agree, it is embarrassing how the presenters fawn over him and ask 'if he can behave' he is a bully.

Ryan Giggs stepped away from his role as Wales manager when he was first arrested and then stepped down when he was charged. And he is hardly a paragon of virtue

Fucking hell. Are you aware that it's an allegation of domestic violence.

Riverlee · 05/07/2022 14:53

Innocent until proven guilty. He’s been charged, not convicted.

An accusation. Innocent until proven guilty, we don’t live in a totalitarian state.

PoshSpice2 · 05/07/2022 14:56

its only an allegation. Innocent until proven guilty … he’s not gone and done an Oscar pistorius so let the man play.
