AIBU TO BE SHOCKED BY THIS INCREASE?!

So I’ve just gotten over the fuel increase, made some changes and become more aware of the energy I’m using both at home and car.

Went to Lidl today. I buy 2 tubs of cream cheese a week, Lidl Goldessa Classic Cream Cheese 200g. It’s been 65p for as long as I can remember. Today shop assistant was sorting shelves and organising labels ect. New label £1.19. I asked if that was the price of the 65p cream cheese to which she said Yh, it’s not changed yet it’s 75p now but will be £1.19.
HOW? How? Can something almost double in price? Also when I was it 75p 😵‍💫

I noticed the other cheeses all being marked up too some by 80p-£1. Add this increase to even 1/3 of a shop and it’s going to be unmanageable!
Has anyone else noticed prices on things they buy almost doubling?
What is the plan to keep costs down?
Where do we go from Lidl’s own soft cheese 😭

I'm sorry but surely that's a typo, you didn't actually spend a tenner on a watermelon?!

We grow watermelon where I live so it’s very cheap but I will put my hand up to 12 pound for a Swede.

Thanks for the recipes. I'm even hungrier now and particularly interested in the mutton one as mutton is (comparatively) good value and easy to get where I am (NZ).

Also, a vote from me for sauerkraut. I make it myself and it's the best way to get my kids to eat lots of cabbage.

I much prefer a lamb biryani and it’s always the New Zealand lamb that I buy.

in fact I have 15kgs of it in the fridge waiting to be cooked tomorrow for Eid. Not that it will be a Biryani. Just a kind of fried/braised dish cooked in umpteen spices and served with Harees and a Tamarind sauce.

we can chose from two kind of NZ lamb here. One that’s grown here from New Zealand lambs and one that grown in NZ then slaughtered. I much prefer the latter though it’s more pricey as it’s grass fed so much more tender.

TomPinch · 09/07/2022 01:18

Thanks- it did cross my mind that 30 minutes isn't long to cook mutton. I generally casserole it for two or three hours in a slow oven.

The lamb here is indeed nice but it's gone up by 20% in the last year. The cheapest I ever see it is £8 per kg equivalent now.

One more question- does biryani work with beef (I'm assuming that it you can eat it). The beef here is very nice (and cheaper than lamb).

Tom, you can make Biryani with anything.

Chicken. Beef. Lamb. Fish. Vegetables.

In fact a nice one has hard boiled eggs in it. It’s delicious and cost wise it’s an economical meal. There’s lots of recipes online.

If you did beef you’d just use a stewing steak. I love NZ beef in a stew or a pie. It’s about 10 pounds a kilo here and rib eye roast is about 25 pounds a kilo.

Fish - you could use fresh tuna or any firm white fish. Fish is much cheaper here than meat and we can get beautiful fresh tuna for the equivalent of 5 pounds a kilo at the height of the season so I just buy loads and freeze it because we’re big fish eaters.

lamb. I love lamb and we pay about 15 pounds per kilo for loin chops, 18 pounds per kilo for a leg of lamb, and for my favorite forequarter i pay about 11 pounds a kilo when it’s on special offer. That’s when I buy a lot and stock the freezer. I like forequarter because it’s a good cut for a big family curry or biryani.

@ArtistViv you have my sympathy. Last time we were really broke we ate toast too, sometimes with a slice of darylea to jazz it up.

I found you don’t really need to defrost as it will toast pretty well straight from frozen.

Oh, now there's an idea - Dairylea! Not thought of that and it's ages since I had any!

Are chicken thighs any cheaper for you.skin and bone on they do work so well in the recipe.because thighs lend so much flavour and help the unxious of it as you cook it.
But you can do it with anything.

TomPinch · 14/07/2022 09:12

Thanks for the suggestion. There seem to be a lot of cheap chicken drumsticks in the shops right now. I've got some in the freezer. There's been a general lack of chicken recently and I haven't seen thigh specifically.

I was popping back anyway to thank @JellyBellyNelly and @DuarPorte for the recipes and tips. Earlier this week I got a lamb leg on special, boned it out and cooked a lamb biryani using the mutton recipe. It was delicious, and the kitchen smelled glorious when I was making it. In the spirit of this thread I reduced the amount of meat to 500g. Will definitely do it again (but with a bit more meat). 😀

Pluvia · 14/07/2022 11:16

Sharwood's medium egg noodles! I bought them during the pandemic for £1 and £1.20 per pack. Now they're £2.10 in Sainsbury's. And Sainsbury's own noodles have shrunk by 30%. You used to get six nests of noodles for £1. Now you only get four. So those have risen in price by 30% too.

@TomPinch I’ve looked but can’t see the recipe? Would you mind quoting it? 🌺

Flakjacketon · 14/07/2022 12:05

With the rising prices I wonder if foodbanks will continue to be able to function. I understand that they use financial donations to buy food to supplement instore donations.

If donations fall will foodbanks run out of money and stock, just as demand increases?

I worry for those who have to choose between food and fuel.

Yeah, it's caused by Brexit. Pound sterling has become very weak as a result of the problems caused by Brexit (falling exports, labour shortages) and therefore everything we import has become a lot more expensive.

This is sort of close to the Badshaah street side Puja time Kolkata biriyani I am thinking of - but what we do in UK is massively BBC-fied and nothing like this 🤣

@Awombaweh The video links to the recipe.
