AIBU TO BE SHOCKED BY THIS INCREASE?!

So I’ve just gotten over the fuel increase, made some changes and become more aware of the energy I’m using both at home and car.

Went to Lidl today. I buy 2 tubs of cream cheese a week, Lidl Goldessa Classic Cream Cheese 200g. It’s been 65p for as long as I can remember. Today shop assistant was sorting shelves and organising labels ect. New label £1.19. I asked if that was the price of the 65p cream cheese to which she said Yh, it’s not changed yet it’s 75p now but will be £1.19.
HOW? How? Can something almost double in price? Also when I was it 75p 😵‍💫

I noticed the other cheeses all being marked up too some by 80p-£1. Add this increase to even 1/3 of a shop and it’s going to be unmanageable!
Has anyone else noticed prices on things they buy almost doubling?
What is the plan to keep costs down?
Where do we go from Lidl’s own soft cheese 😭

Our regular £2 pizza, (remarkably good too), but increased to £2.50!

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 05/07/2022 07:14

Yup, my basic food shop used to be Aldi for around £60-70. Its never under £80 now and thats buying less 'treat' bits like naice ham or some olives etc. I heard that Russia supplied most of the tin for tins so it would be affecting prices but I keep a large stock of tins anyway as emergency food. We're not poor but it's getting harder and harder to stick to budget. £400pcm for a family of five for food and household. Used to be doable with good planning.

80p for 8 sausages? Can you imagine what's in them? 😳
I'd rather go without or have something veggie than eat them!

You don’t need to imagine what’s in them the ingredients tell you. And it’s not too bad, more
pork than Richmond sausages and a fraction of the price. I don’t have the money to buy top end items, and this is where we’re going to see a real disparity in health between poor and rich.

Cat food, what the hell happed to that. Not long ago the pouches were £2.75 then £3.50 now £4.50 in Morrisons. That level of increase puts inflation at over 60%.

how is this right?

I've noticed this too. Bloody fussy cat will only eat felix as good as it looks and I managed to get 40 sachets for £9.99 in Morrisons last week. Tesco is £4.50 for 12. Sadly one of my cars got run over at Easter so I have halved the cost, I'd love another cat but can't afford it sadly.

Cervinia · 05/07/2022 07:25

On a positive note, whole cooked chickens (the cold ones not the hot rotisserie ones) are currently £2.99 in Morrisons, I couldn’t believe it, so I bought two yesterday and did the never ending MN chicken batch cook. Chicken supreme, chicken pie, Chinese chicken curry, stock and still have cold sliced breast for dinner tonight 😂

the cats had all the greasy bits from the underside and the skin, that saved on a Whiskas pouch!

In my local sainsburys.

Yep! We paid £1.80 for 4 pints of semi skimmed milk in co op the other day!!!

MiniTheMinx · 05/07/2022 07:30

I've gone back to shopping online at tesco. I was doing a weekly shop in Aldi or Lidl. I'm back to doing a big monthly shop. I'm actually spending less. Fresh veg, bread, milk and some dairy is bought weekly from wherever is most convenient.

Bloodyel · 05/07/2022 07:30

It's awful and as pp have said it's going to be those who already struggle, which let's be honest is a great wedge of the population, who feel it hardest. I can't eat gluten or my body attacks itself and my nervous system starts breaking down so my already expensive basics are even more unaffordable.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 05/07/2022 07:31

Yes I think prices have gone up by a third overall. I like nice butter and thats 8-9£ a kg now.

Currently trying to focus on food waste but even comfortably off these rises are not sustainable long term.

girlmom21 · 05/07/2022 07:34

It was the £1.50 increase in baby formula in the space of a week that really bothered me

What brand? We’ve been watching the Aldi one slowly creep up…

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/07/2022 07:35

i always buy frozen chicken
frozen fish
only buy fresh salmon when it is yellow stickered

Icannever · 05/07/2022 07:36

I think lidls is no longer the cheaper option for shopping. Tescos still has creamfields soft cheese for 49p.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/07/2022 07:38

tesco always had cheap cream cheese as well as the cheapest brie

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/07/2022 07:38

but i mainly avoid tesco as there is too much choice and stick my smaller asda/lidl

IncessantNameChanger · 05/07/2022 07:40

I was debating if I could get my kids treats from Lidl bakery yesterday. I dont buy them.yogurts now either. It's a bit worrying and I might have to think about some major lifestyle changes.

Most of dd school uniform was Asda or second hand but theres only so much you can cut back on. Everyone needs food ☹

girlmom21 · 05/07/2022 07:43

@Skinnermarink it was Cow & Gate in sainsburys. It went from £8 to £9.50 so I think it's now in line with Aptamil and the like.

I was lucky that it wasn't the end of the world for us but I really worried about the families who are already living hand to mouth

I'm wondering how much of it is we paid too little for our food and now we are paying the "real" cost. Like are farmers still under paid for the milk?

This is the precise issue, food used to take up a much higher proportion of people’s income than in very recent years.

speakout · 05/07/2022 07:46

It is a worry, we have a prerfect storm of events causing these increases.
I am eating out of the freezer right now, but that won't last forever. Trying to restock with whoopsies.
I will pass on the 80p sausages. In hard times I prefer to switch to plant based protein sources- cheaper and healthier. Chick peas, beans or lentils can make a little meat stretch much further, in a curry or cassoulet or replace meat entirely.
Luckily I am a huge tofu fan too great in stir fries, katsu, fajitas.

ThreeRingCircus · 05/07/2022 07:48

It's a real worry. We're lucky in that we can afford to absorb some of the increases but even so have decided to eat as cheaply as we can at the moment.....so lots of jacket potatoes/beans on toast/pasta with garlic butter type meals. If we're feeling like that then god knows how people that were already struggling are going to cope.

ZenNudist · 05/07/2022 07:48

I've said YABU because price rises are inevitable. Brexit hasn't helped (and we were warned about that) plus fuel cost is built into food production and transportation. You can claim to be shocked but everything costs more.

MerryMarigold · 05/07/2022 07:52

Yep M&S is the same, 50p here £1 there, it all adds up

Only on Mumsnet

Food was always cheap in UK and now it's moving to where it is elsewhere in Europe. I think lots of it was kept artificially low hence the big jumps.
Chicken went up a while ago in whole sale (well everything did) just supermarkets managed to hold the price longer due to contracts and buying powers.

Remember that all the increases you see at home are felt throughout food supply chains as well. At every step.
