AIBU TO BE SHOCKED BY THIS INCREASE?!

So I’ve just gotten over the fuel increase, made some changes and become more aware of the energy I’m using both at home and car.

Went to Lidl today. I buy 2 tubs of cream cheese a week, Lidl Goldessa Classic Cream Cheese 200g. It’s been 65p for as long as I can remember. Today shop assistant was sorting shelves and organising labels ect. New label £1.19. I asked if that was the price of the 65p cream cheese to which she said Yh, it’s not changed yet it’s 75p now but will be £1.19.
HOW? How? Can something almost double in price? Also when I was it 75p 😵‍💫

I noticed the other cheeses all being marked up too some by 80p-£1. Add this increase to even 1/3 of a shop and it’s going to be unmanageable!
Has anyone else noticed prices on things they buy almost doubling?
What is the plan to keep costs down?
Where do we go from Lidl’s own soft cheese 😭

Lurpak spreadable is 1/4 (25%) rapeseed oil. It's not real butter.

LoisLane66 · 06/07/2022 17:19

Butter is simply butter. Lurpak is not.

@Dixiechickonhols given that Milky Way stars are now £1.60 in there when not on offer I refuse now (not for me, one of my teenage DS 😂)

Yeah...but what KIND of sausages? More like meat paste stuffed into a pig gut casing.
If you look on YouTube at the videos of The Bald Foodie Guy, aka Gareth Morgan, he does food comparisons and he did one on the sausages you mention which came LAST in his opinion. He buys several of the same items from different shops which viewers want to see compared, shows the ingredients and info on the boxes or tins then cooks and eats them on camera before giving his verdicts.
80p for 8 sausages? Haha. You get what you pay for.

Are people still this ignorant to miss the point? NOBODY chooses to buy the 80p sausages - it is done out of necessity, maybe just be grateful you aren't in that position YET

Exactly no one goes oooooh 80p sausages are so delicious and full of nice meat and are what I want to be eating

Agree with @Stevie6
@LoisLane66 winding people up on other threads, genuinally think she gets a sick kick from putting others down. Got some gall aswell with no name change.

Lurpak spreadable is 1/4 (25%) rapeseed oil. It's not real butter.

That will explain why it’s really gone up v normal butter - hit by both dairy price increases and oil shortages.

Bubblebubblebah · 06/07/2022 17:51

I will again point out the 86p ones from asda have more meat than the 2.25 richmond ones. Frankly test of the ingredients is very similar too ... For the "haha" twat

Bubblebubblebah · 06/07/2022 17:51

Well meat and offal (pork)

Dixiechickonhols · 06/07/2022 17:57

I can’t stomach cheap sausages after a stint working in Wall’s sausage factory as a student but I understand needs must. I buy reduced plant ones over cheap meat.
That has made me think of factory shops - there was a shop at the factory open to public. Our local biscuit factory has a shop you can get massive bags of broken biscuits for not much. It’s often word of mouth though to find out about places.

Things like lurpack used to be a once a year treat though (Christmas) not an everyday staple.
I think more people will start to come around to older ways again. Some foods will go back to being occasional treats or only eaten seasonally.
I know the mumsnet chicken is a joke on here but the roast chicken Sunday, leftover chicken risotto/pie Monday and chicken & veg soup Wednesday isn’t done by many.
Also using all your oven when it’s on.
I have a weightloss Instagram and post healthy recipes and so many people are amazed by how much I cook but it’s just way my mum and grandma did. The baked oats I had today for breakfast got cooked Sunday when oven was on.

What is your instagram please, @Dixiechickonhols ?

More meat than branded ones.
See Richmond ant 3 x price.

And some people gave a choice of 80p sausages or going hungry.

Why would I hide behind a name change? I'm not ashamed of my views, we're all entitled to them whether they sit well with others or not.
Cheap sausages aren't good for you. Better to buy pasta and veg but you pays your money and takes your choice, as the saying goes.
IMV it's better to have less of something you enjoy eating rather than more of something you don't enjoy.
Having my own views is more important to me than reading everyone else's and following their narrative in case people like you jump on me. 😁

You can have tour views and not be an absolute twat about it. It is actually humanly possible.

Stevie6 · 06/07/2022 21:41

@Bubblebubblebah 👏🏻👏🏻😂😂

LoisLane66 · 06/07/2022 21:43

It depends on your interpretation of that word. I don't know anyone who would fit that description, certainly not me, nor do I know anyone who would use that expression so easily and carelessly as happens on here or indeed to friends and acquaintances in normal conversation. Language like that just isn't in their or my vocabulary, although we all know the words.

Have a look in tesco. 200g soft cheese is 49p (creamfield brand is low price for all cheese there)
They're generally well priced too. If you shop the clubcard prices and stock up on non perishables when they're reduced and pick other shopping based on clubcard prices it works out very good value too, much cheaper than asda for a shop and their fruit and veg is good quality unlike some I've tried from other supermarkets.

Totally disagree on the fruit n veg. Both Tesco's near me are the worst for fresh stuff. It's pretty rank to start with and goes off within 2-3 days max.

Every other supermarket (Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons and M&S) all do way better quality fruit n veg.

Xenia · 05/07/2022 11:48

We and most of the world chose to take on passive debts to pay people to stay at home during covid which was against at the time and obviously am seeing what I expected now happening. We have saddled young people with debt for a generation - internationally it was the wrong decision in my view and with interest rates going up just servicing the debt is going to cost many countries huge amounts of money.

My petrol yesterday for half a tank was about £60. (I have filled it up when half full ever since the petrol queues issue a few months ago).

I live with 2 vegan student age sons so things like butter etc do not feature in the house or cheese but I am sure even their vegetables have gone up in price.

Those if us brought up by parents who suffered world war 2 and rationing in the 1950s in a sense have a good start because we were brought up with that make do and mend mentality, although it will certainly is going to be hard for people.

But Xenia aren't you a super duper hugely successful lawyer with toms and tons of cash who likes to tell us all about how you were back to work 5 minutes after giving birth? And how you're such an Independent Woman 😂😂😂 why would YOU of all people on MN need to think about rationing?

Bubblebubblebah · 06/07/2022 21:59

I think it's very shop by shop @MushyPeasPrincess I have it the other way around. Tesco's one lasts week, local aldi is 2 days. 3 at best.

MushyPeasPrincess · 06/07/2022 22:28

I put in 2 chopped up chicken thighs, a tin of chickpeas and a few frozen cubes of spinach. This will probably be enough for 6.

6 what? Borrowers? Lilliputians? My teen would eat that himself and be saying nice snack, when's tea? Grin

I was thinking Borrowers who love a helping of fresh air on the side.

Yep M&S is the same, 50p here £1 there, it all adds up, like you say even on 1/3 of the average weekly shop it makes it suddenly much more expensive. You really do have to think strategically when out shopping now. Those who were struggling before I can’t imagine how they must be managing now, I wince and I can afford the increases, peoples anxiety levels are going to be through the roof.

What happens when you literally can not afford to live? It seems like Poverty will be a lifestyle some people will aspire to once they’re well and truly penniless.

“Those who were struggling before I can’t imagine how they must be managing now,”

I feed DC as best I can and for myself I try to eat as much out of date, free food as I can find. It’s usually bread. Bread hates me and I’ve put on over a stone despite having no money for food. How’s that for irony.

Why aren't cheap sausages good for you? What makes them so much worse than expensive sausages?

In fact I'd say putting one cheap sausage in your veg and pasta would be better than without. It adds fat and protein, making a more rounded meal that is Moore likely to keep you fuller for longer.
