AIBU TO BE SHOCKED BY THIS INCREASE?!

So I’ve just gotten over the fuel increase, made some changes and become more aware of the energy I’m using both at home and car.

Went to Lidl today. I buy 2 tubs of cream cheese a week, Lidl Goldessa Classic Cream Cheese 200g. It’s been 65p for as long as I can remember. Today shop assistant was sorting shelves and organising labels ect. New label £1.19. I asked if that was the price of the 65p cream cheese to which she said Yh, it’s not changed yet it’s 75p now but will be £1.19.
HOW? How? Can something almost double in price? Also when I was it 75p 😵‍💫

I noticed the other cheeses all being marked up too some by 80p-£1. Add this increase to even 1/3 of a shop and it’s going to be unmanageable!
Has anyone else noticed prices on things they buy almost doubling?
What is the plan to keep costs down?
Where do we go from Lidl’s own soft cheese 😭

A packet of croissants was over £4 (OK it was waitrose) but I was still shocked

@Skinnermarink it was Cow & Gate in sainsburys. It went from £8 to £9.50 so I think it's now in line with Aptamil and the like.

I was lucky that it wasn't the end of the world for us but I really worried about the families who are already living hand to mouth

I combi feed with majority breast and one bottle at night but now realising how much I could have saved if I hadn't (although I would have lost my sanity!)

Until the very top of the chain ie energy and fuel firms stops profiteering from Covid and the war, it isn’t going to stop. It isn’t costing them more to obtain the oil/gas etc, they’ve hiked prices because no one can stop them. And as long as shareholders etc refuse to have diminished dividends, this too will perpetuate it.

It’s actually quite horrifying - we’re watching the dystopian future where there’s a super-rich demographic, and the rest of the population starving and struggling to survive. Not sure what happens when we’re all so poor we stop buying stuff. Presumably they all have plenty invested and squirrelled away to keep a few generations going, and in this instance evolution will eradicate those who aren’t in the top tier.

Essentially a return to serfdom

I was horrified when I went to Sainsbury's to buy Sancerre. Almost doubled in price per bottle.

Somethingneedstochange · 07/07/2022 22:04

I sometimes manage to get Heck sausages on the reduced section. Not often though I'm not prepared to get into a scrap for a bit of cheap food.

Interestquestion · 07/07/2022 22:13

Wasn’t the example of thighs, chickpeas and spinach as part of a biryani, which has a shedload of rice? I assumed that’s what that poster meant when she said biryani anyway - I’ve never had a rice free one anyway.

love the “Sancerre has doubled!”. I sympathise as I love Sancerre but what a very mumsnet sentence Grin

Thought I would add some meal plans for when we return to the 1950s!

4 for £1 in Morrisons yesterday!

Most of that sounds nice. Protein for breakfast. Cooked lunch with a pudding to fill you and a light tea. Some cheaper options like kippers and using leftovers eg haddock for lunch some bits would go into fishcakes for breakfast day after.
Obviously most people have main meal at night now but lots on there I eat regularly.

Love stuff like this thanks for posting. Cold lunch Monday would be because it was washing day.

Yep, it was a biryani. But the poster claimed her recipe was an example of using just a little meat and lots of veg, when the only veg she mentioned is two sad cubes of spinach. So, about a tablespoon once cooked.

HauntingScream · 07/07/2022 23:26

"One tin of chickpeas is also nowhere near enough for 6 people. Nor is two cubes of spinach."

I'm sure I wrote it was in a biryani? So it also had rice enough for 6 people as well as the chicken, chickpeas and spinach, some onions and tomatoes too. A few spices. It was delicious. Grin

HauntingScream · 07/07/2022 23:29

And it wasn't 2 cubes of spinach but a fair few. All cooked in one pot. Very flavoursome.

antelopevalley · 07/07/2022 23:31

It is enough if you use a lot of rice.

TrashPandas · 07/07/2022 23:54

Well, each to their own, but I wouldn't consider that an adequate amount of veg for six people.

antelopevalley · 07/07/2022 23:55

I agree. It is rice with a bit of veg.

Or 2 chicken thighs for 6 people

I would be well up for the jam roly poly. Is it still possible to buy real suet in the UK? I have to order it specially from the butcher.

I do my main shop in Lidl... was always under a tenner for loads of things (I live alone).
Now it is about £15 for what feels like the same stuff.
I liked to get the family pack of pork belly slices.. they were £2.99... over the last couple of months, have gone up to £3.89.
Iceland chicken thighs were less than £2 for a kilo.. they then went to £2 for 750g.. now they cost £3. Is ridiculous.
I get a lot of chicken for my dog. But then I am on UC, and have been told on social media, that taxpayer money is not for pets, and that I should sell my dog.

Pets are essential for many people. They aid mental health for a start.

HauntingScream · 08/07/2022 03:28

I should have mentioned that it was served with raita (grated cucumber and yoghurt) and salad.
The point was that you can stretch a small amount of meat by adding veg and pulses. This works with lots of dishes.

DuarPorte · 08/07/2022 04:29

Why - just why - are we dissecting people’s specific recipes, single components out of the big longer term spread of things called a diet. A thread about the shock of rising prices - a thread where people share single tips and tricks they’ve found useful. Someone shares one meal out of a whole day/week/month of eating who knows how much fruit or veg. …So a family of six ate some nice homemade biriyani with some chickpeas chicken and spinach - and hey it on its own wasn’t the textbook balanced plate - because every single meal isn’t meant to be that way! Someone ate some biriyani Is all - Why do we need to dissect that one meal to scrutinise it for the balance of veg or protein or this or that? Why can’t we just leave people be, to look after themselves amidst a moment of crisis the best they can?

You shouldn’t need to mention this. I’m amazed that people are scrutinising one single meal this way.

Nat6999 · 08/07/2022 05:53

I bulk buy cordial from my local off licence & it was £52 for 2 cases, now £67.

floweringpoppies · 08/07/2022 06:13

@HauntingScream I first thought WTF 6 people but when I realised it was a biryani then I could see it working.

The latest bag of frozen spinach I've got has huge cubes in whereas other brands are tiny so 2 cubes is nearer 6 of an old bag.

With the chickpeas you've enough protein too 🤷🏼‍♀️

In my local sainsburys.

That must be in a petrol station.
