AIBU TO BE SHOCKED BY THIS INCREASE?!

So I’ve just gotten over the fuel increase, made some changes and become more aware of the energy I’m using both at home and car.

Went to Lidl today. I buy 2 tubs of cream cheese a week, Lidl Goldessa Classic Cream Cheese 200g. It’s been 65p for as long as I can remember. Today shop assistant was sorting shelves and organising labels ect. New label £1.19. I asked if that was the price of the 65p cream cheese to which she said Yh, it’s not changed yet it’s 75p now but will be £1.19.
HOW? How? Can something almost double in price? Also when I was it 75p 😵‍💫

I noticed the other cheeses all being marked up too some by 80p-£1. Add this increase to even 1/3 of a shop and it’s going to be unmanageable!
Has anyone else noticed prices on things they buy almost doubling?
What is the plan to keep costs down?
Where do we go from Lidl’s own soft cheese 😭

If you eat meat, you should be eating offal. Nose to fork eating, an animal has been slaughtered. Make bone broth with bones, full of goodness.

here here! You should not have to sell your dog that is awful

Jhc! On a women’s social media platform we are now calling women skanks for having babies on UC! A huge proportion of people on UC are working babies or no babies. It’s not ‘women who have children’ who are causing prices to shoot up. I think you should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Children are treated worse than dogs in this country which is why so many are abused to death.

My baby was jumped on/nearly jumped on by unattended dogs 4 times in a year including a dog having her hand in its mouth and stealing her food and toy. There are now dogs constantly brought into kids playgrounds.

Get over yourselves. I love animals but your dog won’t be paying for you to get care in your old age our kids taxes will!!!

Philadelphia is currently £1 in Asda

Big fan of using everything (draw line at brains tho). Keeping perls and veg offcuts to add to bones makes for really nice and super cheap broth

Only those kids who become net contributors will be. Children born into families on benefits rarely become net contributors.

Do you understand what a net contributor is?

What radio show?

It was on LBC. They talked to a number of people. I think the one who mentioned the increase in profitmargins was a reporter from The Guardian, but I really can't be certain.

00kitty · 05/07/2022 22:29

£3.49 in Aldi today for Heinz ketchup, right next to their own version about smaller for 65p who in their right mind will spend £3.50 on ketchup!

Our weekly/10 day shop is up from 90 to 120 we always shop at Aldi. We are moving soon and am now worrying about gas and electric as realised we can’t port our tariff 😭

nannykatherine · 05/07/2022 22:38

I went to lidl the other day and spent more than I usually do in Sainsburys
Lidl is not cheaper
The fruit and veg don’t last
and the chicken breast I bought had a terrible smell when I opened the packet and it was still in date .
I find using sainsburys offers and smart shop prices and comparing price of all brands and own brands they have available is a great way to save on the weekly shop

nannykatherine · 05/07/2022 22:41

Get coop members card and choose the vouchers each week always have money off milk

Tigofigo · 05/07/2022 22:48

Prices for things like meat and milk have been artificially low for a long time. Dairy farmers have been held over a barrel by supermarkets for years. £2.99 for a chicken? It's hard to see how a farmer could possibly make a profit on that.

Agree. It's completely unsustainable to keep those prices, from a farmer but also an environmental perspective.

We buy a high welfare, well farmed chicken about once a month and pay £14 for it.

We need to go back to eating less meat and dairy, and to eating nose to tail.

NRRK28 · 05/07/2022 22:54

I don't mind spending that on decent ketchup tbh. We don't eat it that often so a big bottle of Heinz 50:50 will last us a couple of months, it's lower sugar so I feel less guilty about the DC eating it, and I usually stock up when it's on offer, so that's probably £1.50 a month. I once bought an own brand one (Sainsbury I think) and it was foul. Like tomato puree with cloves in it.

A takeaway coffee is the same price, yet millions buy those 2-3 times a week.

And I'm feeling really sorry for some people who had illness or allergies. I'm Coeliac. Gluten free food is bloody expensive and you simply can't eat only meat and vegetables +fruits - because they are expensive too. Cheapest bread GF is around £2 (mini loaf). I simply ate normal bread this evening because overspend our weekly food budget already... Yes, I'm lucky because I have only diarrhoea once I'm glutened but I know some people are out of life for 2 or more days after normal slice of bread.
I still have lots of vegetables in my garden grown this year but I don't know what I'll do in winter or even autumn. I live in London and it's hard to find even yellow sticker food (or it's discounted only £0.10).

Imabadmummy · 05/07/2022 23:12

I think food prices are crazy at the moment but I've also been noticing the lack of stock on shelves as well.
I normally shop online, but had to go in store last week and there was hardly any stock, like I'm thinking did they forget to shelf stack today.
That's happened to me twice now in 2 different supermarkets but thought maybe it's cose I went late evening.
But then I have also been in BnM & Homebargains this week & really noticed their food shelves had a lot of gaps too.
I feel there's a serious lack of supply which is driving prices up too.

Blinky21 · 05/07/2022 23:17

Friend of mine who is high up in one of the major food distributors says this is just the tip of the iceberg

Meklk · 05/07/2022 23:25

I think the same, autumn /winter will be disaster.
I bought big freezer, started to buy discounted items - meat, fish, etc. But there are lots of families who can't afford even to buy a freezer..... It's so sad....
I also joined Facebook groups for freebies - received some toothpaste, few laundry capsules - at least something saved....

OakTreex · 05/07/2022 23:29

Lidl is not cheap. I went recently and was shocked - right back to Aldi for me it's hands-down cheaper (and better quality in my opinion).

xraydelta · 05/07/2022 23:34

When I worked in a well known supermarket in the mid 1990s, a pint of milk was 25p and a loaf of own brand bread was 25p.

It seems like another world away 😔

Wheelibinsoutinthemorning · 05/07/2022 23:38

This is making M&S food sound reasonable. Milk there is £1.15 for 4 pints and their own brand 500g tubs of spreadable butter (containing only milk and salt, no oil) are £4 - although they were £3:80 until recently.

They had Lurpak next to the butter today. I can’t remember the price, but it wasn’t £7.

I respect an earlier poster, who said it was because M&S have long contracts so their costs haven’t gone up as much yet.

@Meklk , I thought eating gluten caused permanent damage to coeliacs. Is that not right?

I do sympathise with the cost of g-f products, though. I eat a lot of rice and potatoes.

wellyelliebee · 05/07/2022 23:56

I managed to spend over £100 this week in lidl on an average weekly shop (it did include £8 on booze). First time I've ever spent over £100 there when it wasn't the Xmas shop (I shop there all year round including xmas).

It does if you have coeliac disease yes, as that's an autoimmune illness where eating gluten damages the gut (and will increase risk of cancer etc. if gluten continues to be eaten)

Supermarkets are arseholes. They’re totally exploiting the situation. Something needs to be done, capitalism is now out of control

It was on the news this morning. One supermarket has refused to Heinz baked beans now as their customers can’t afford the price of them. It then went on to the outrageous cost of Lurpak.

I think that is Tesco. I heard a conversation about it tonight in Aldi, someone was buying tins of Aldi beans for 39p and said that the Heinz ones were £1.70 a tin.
