AIBU TO BE SHOCKED BY THIS INCREASE?!

So I’ve just gotten over the fuel increase, made some changes and become more aware of the energy I’m using both at home and car.

Went to Lidl today. I buy 2 tubs of cream cheese a week, Lidl Goldessa Classic Cream Cheese 200g. It’s been 65p for as long as I can remember. Today shop assistant was sorting shelves and organising labels ect. New label £1.19. I asked if that was the price of the 65p cream cheese to which she said Yh, it’s not changed yet it’s 75p now but will be £1.19.
HOW? How? Can something almost double in price? Also when I was it 75p 😵‍💫

I noticed the other cheeses all being marked up too some by 80p-£1. Add this increase to even 1/3 of a shop and it’s going to be unmanageable!
Has anyone else noticed prices on things they buy almost doubling?
What is the plan to keep costs down?
Where do we go from Lidl’s own soft cheese 😭

DH asked if we should get some butter, I said no as it's too expensive and picked up a cheap tub of margerine instead. I normally always use butter for baking but it's just now too expensive so have moved to an unhealthy substitute

Margarine isn't unhealthy though, I always bake with margarine

I do feel for people who are struggling however we have, as s nation, been paying far far too little for food for a very long time, at least the last 20 years. We have record numbers if obese and diabetic people (and yes I realise there is a school of thought that ‘good’ food is more expensive than crap food but no one needs fizzy pop, crisps, sweets, cakes biscuits etc.
Actually cooking from scratch and using little or no meat is way cheaper than trying to eat ‘cheaply’ with meat, fish etc.
As a nation most people (note I said most not all) CAN afford to work a few more hours or give up luxuries to make ends meet, people have had to do so all through the history of man!

I guess you have forgotten about the millions who live in substandard housing with no access to full cooking facilities never mind a full set of implements and a pantry stocked with oils, salts and spices, flour etc

i can cook cheaply because I have all these things, I couldn’t when I lived in a bedsit. Being poor is very expensive.

gnilliwdog · 05/07/2022 20:15

@Florenz. Yes, I will see if there is a petition to parliament yet about this. @Merryweather80 That is so heart breaking. For you and others in same position, please try foodbanks, is there a community fridge near you? Olio is a food sharing app. Local churches, mosques or synagogues may allow community pot meals where everyone brings an ingredient and food cooked for all. I am so sorry.

hoopmatrix · 05/07/2022 20:21

Of course- health will go down for sure. Do you think all MP’s etc are buying 80p sausages. They don’t give a toss. Also this is a global things that’s happening, yet none of the ‘leaders’ of all the world have come up with any ideas??!! Madness.

Anon564354 · 05/07/2022 20:23

I remember this time last year, a shop used to cost me around £65 a week with a very small top up. It’s now £105 without a top up. That’s Aldi. It’s horrific and it genuinely scares me. I have 2 jobs and was going to leave one, but I can’t afford to now. I do 50 hours a week across the 2, have 2 small children and an evening commitment for my youngest. It’s so so scary. There is nothing I can do to earn more. I saved £1000 between September and Christmas. Now I can just about scrape together a spare £40 each month (which I appreciate I am lucky to have!)

hoopmatrix · 05/07/2022 20:27

So hard. Don’t forget that the size of goods has also shrunk as well as price going up!!! I think it’s out of control. It’s puke the bills going up and yet British Gas etc still making huge profits. Shell making huge profits. They are taking the p#%s our of us all!!!! WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO!!!!!!!

hoopmatrix · 05/07/2022 20:28

Puke=like!!! 🤪

If you can get to know yellow stickers time though there are some fab reductions

Problem with knowing yellow sticker times is that others do too. There is a woman in my local shop who blocks access to yellow stickers with her trolly and then checks every single item... I watched it few times because the grumbling noises of others brought my attention to it.

Can you not say excuse me politely or move her trolley

I'm sure someone will in the end

I do my main shop in Lidl... was always under a tenner for loads of things (I live alone).
Now it is about £15 for what feels like the same stuff.
I liked to get the family pack of pork belly slices.. they were £2.99... over the last couple of months, have gone up to £3.89.
Iceland chicken thighs were less than £2 for a kilo.. they then went to £2 for 750g.. now they cost £3. Is ridiculous.
I get a lot of chicken for my dog. But then I am on UC, and have been told on social media, that taxpayer money is not for pets, and that I should sell my dog.

Sell your dog?! Would they tell the skanks popping out kids to shove them into care? I hate it when people are so bloody judgemental about what others should and shouldn't be doing. 🤬

Heinz Baked beans. £1.65 a tin in a small Tesco this morning. None available in the big Tesco. My eldest is autistic, they are his main diet and he will notice any change even if I poured different ones in a Heinz tin. He can tell the cheese has changed just by sniffing it. Seems like a small problem but it’s huge for us!

Try home bargains or b&m. Often have 6
packs for £3/4 @Goldencarp

I try to get yellow sticker items as much as possible but even those seem to be less and less. I guess maybe more people looking for them. I got a tub of creme fraiche yesterday for 29p and Lidl had pink salmon tins on offer at £1.29 the other day so going to do my favourite salmon pasta dish tonight on the cheap !

Babyroobs - Your salmon pasta dish sounds lovely. What do you put in it (apart from salmon and pasta)?

^^ This. If you buy staples in bulk, and cook in batches, then in theory you can eat more healthily and spend less per meal on ingredients than buying ready meals or takeaways. However, doing this requires sufficient access to money to stock up when things are on offer and pay for electricity/gas to cook the food. As well, it requires that you have a cooker and the necessary equipment to make meals, a freezer to store the food in, and the time and skills to do it. It's not going to be possible for someone living in a bedsit with limited cooking and storage facilities and no extra money to take advantage of special offers/bulk deals.

It is just so devastating reading all the experiences in this thread, and scary too.

However, I doubt the airports will be empty of people flying all over the globe on their third, fourth, fifth or more trip anytime soon. Same for high end shopping, and bags, and shoes, and cars, and cash buying of property when the bottom falls out of the mortgage market when people can't afford them anymore.

Until those in a more privileged position are affected I doubt the present Government will do much to help really. They are the party of the affluent aren't they?

My local sainsburys garage 😳😳😳

Mini rolls were on offer in Tesco for £2 at the weekend. Might still be.
I don’t remember the individual prices of things because I used to just put things in the trolley without looking. I rarely spent more than £40 though. The prices going up have coincided with me going back to work after maternity leave so I’m buying different food now that I used to. I’m getting mainly stuff for meals and only getting snack food like chocolate and yoghurts if they’re on offer. I’m also cutting down on veggies quite a bit (I know they’re cheap but they generally go to waste in my house). My food shop is now regularly over £50 per week and I’ve noticed that gets me less than used to.

I'm wondering how much of it is we paid too little for our food and now we are paying the "real" cost. Like are farmers still under paid for the milk?

The farmers aren't getting enough, it's the middlemen (the dairy companies) who are making the most - more than the supermarket I believe.
The same is true of many foods, the middleman makes the most (eg Heinz).

I’m living off toast (freeze the bread), cup a soups & crackers, I spend about £5-£7 a week on food, I buy a tub of I can’t believe it’s not butter from Asda once a fortnight for £1 & get the cheapest toilet roll, luckily in lockdown I hoarded a load of cleaning stuff & toiletries, lost my job nearly 2 mths ago & desperately need another, JSA is getting me nowhere. I live on my own don’t have family or friends & it seems an age since I had a hot meal, I would give anything for a takeaway 😂

That sounds tough @Bozlem80

have you joined olio

LoisLane66 · 05/07/2022 21:01

I read that 750g Lurpak spreadable is touching the £11 mark. Now that's the size of 3 normal blocks so to do a fair comparison it works out at £3.70 per 250g block. Most supermarkets have security tags on them now and on many blocks of cheese.
Funny that M&S gold top Cornish milk is still £1.30 per litre and has been for over a year, maybe longer.
Lurpak spreadable isn't even 100% butter.
Waitrose was selling some West Country butter last week at 1.20 for 250g.
Better stock up and freeze the cheese and butter.

here here! You should not have to sell your dog that is awful

I noticed the aldi weetabix are the now nearly the same price as the brand!!! Couldn’t believe it

AlviarinAesSedai · 05/07/2022 21:08

I listened to the You and Yours program on Radio 4 at lunchtime. The man from Hodmedod said the price of tin cans had doubled. But his prices for legumes are still reasonable.
The women who was selling brownies is from early Bake Off.
What are we doing with the tin cans we put in our recycling?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/07/2022 21:14

@MabelFurball , I make a salmon/pasta dish too. Adapted from an M&S ready meal from some years ago.
A tin of salmon, drained and flaked, skin and bones removed.
A white sauce, a little grated cheese and a splash of white wine added.
Pasta and broccoli florets cooked separately, drained well, all mixed together.

*Those weren’t in the M&S version, but IMO they perk it up very nicely!

Nanananananana99 · 05/07/2022 21:18

@ArtistViv you have my sympathy. Last time we were really broke we ate toast too, sometimes with a slice of darylea to jazz it up.

I found you don’t really need to defrost as it will toast pretty well straight from frozen.
