If someone said this to you when you asked about dietary requirements for a child, would you think they were massively w*nky/snobby, or is it socially acceptable and fine?

Processed meat to me is cold cut compressed rubbish or meats you find in cheap ready meals...

Thats now what the term means though

DrFlorence · 08/07/2022 11:21

humous, cheese, baked beans, eggs, to name just a few. If you don't have time to boil an egg, cut some cheese, heat some beans etc., then I really don't think you've got time to be hosting play dates.
I would never dream of not checking what a child I was caring for could or couldn't eat and I would always cater for their parents preferences if inviting them over., Parents have every right to dictate what their child does and doesn't eat, and if they don't want them to eat something that is harmful to their health, then that is their choice, and should be respected. One offs accumulate and they also give children a taste for the foods that parents don't want them to eat.

This is utter bunkum

Unless a person has allergies or a food intolerance, there are no health hazards to an occasional pizza, shop bought chicken Kiev or sausage!

5zeds · 08/07/2022 11:23

A boiled egg, sliced cheese and some beans are not a meal.

and yet, cheese soufflé with a bean salad is???

This is like “oh no we NEVER eat Pizza” while scoffing bread and cheese with a tomato salad.

id say add some fruit or veg but egg cheese beans sounds fine.

Butchyrestingface · 08/07/2022 13:40

A boiled egg, sliced cheese and some beans are not a meal.

I've heard if you add some fresh orange juice and brown bread/toast to that, it's about the most nutritious meal you can have. 😋

SilverGlassHare · 08/07/2022 21:34

Leading food scientists and a cross-party group of MPs are actually petitioning to have nitrate preservatives in pork products banned in the UK - from the Guardian. Avoiding them isn’t just being precious.

I would never have cheese souffle with bean salad either, they do not go.
You can eat random things yourself, but it is not okay to serve up for a playdate.

TheKeatingFive · 09/07/2022 03:36

Why would it not be okay to serve up something 'random' that the child eats?

And what's going to happen if you do?

@antelopevalley

Disagree. I'd say kids are exactly the type who enjoy "a random things " type meal. Especially if they're younger.

I can’t wait for loose women to discuss whether a boiled egg a slice of cheese and some beans is a complete meal
it’s the kind of riveting stuff they like 🤣

So you think it's ok to feed someone something full of salt, spices, additives which they may react to?

Ikeptgoing · 09/07/2022 22:35

Oh my Lord, if my child returned home from a play date saying they gave me a boiled egg and hummus for tea I'd think that was weird. All of my DCs would think that a bizarre tea. Cop on some of you precious PP - it's usually pizzas or chicken nuggets and chips for a large play date tea or whatever os normal for a mass eating in tea that has been suggested already!

You really don't serve boiled eggs and hummus !! Strange PPs!!! No one will come back !

I think it was said earlier, unless there is a religious allergy or food intolerance or will make child nauseous reason, I don't know any parent that would say "Johnny mustn't eat processed meats" nor would any parent expect a roast chicken or whatever cooked for multiple DCs on a play date tea ... jeez.

Some weird PPs on here that think it's ok for parents to be demanding on a play date at someone else's house

! ... people whose DCs won't get invited back!

I'd do it once and then think little Johnny's parents (without an allergy religious or intolerance/nausea reason for their request ) are entitled pr**ks so we'll just miss him off of future invites! It's ok as my DCs have plenty of friends and.we don't need to humour insufferable entitled parents

No one has said this

Sheesh talk about a parent who cannot read the room
Do your DCs have ANY friends?! You can't be going off on on one for normal stuff

Delectable · 09/07/2022 23:04

Processed meat is one of the worst kinds of "food like substances" consumed by humans. However, big pharma and many others make a lot of money from it and money influence's government. Read The Food Revolution by John Robins of the Baskin Robins American icecream fame. How Not To Die by Dr Greger, The China Study by Dr T Colin Campbell for more about the benefits of eating whole foods.

If you don't like that your kids have been fed hummus and egg than surely you're the fussy, entitled person.

It's a huge society problem if rubbish food is regularly shoved in little growing humans and normal, wholesome food is seen as ridiculous, inappropriate and worth discouraging kids' friendships over.

Ragged · 10/07/2022 10:28

Processed meat is one of the worst kinds of "food like substances" consumed by humans.

I expected MNers to vote "carbohydrates" into pole position for "worst kinds of food". Especially fresh fruit. What about hydrogenated fats, chewy sweets, Pringles, Quavers, emulsifier-filled white bread, alcohol, ice cream, donuts, Oreo cookies, soda pop...

LoisLane66 · 10/07/2022 11:25

I think it's possibly to do with the nitrates in processed meat.

And what about Quorn, highly processed mould which is highly allergenic

SnackSizeRaisin · 10/07/2022 19:58

Whereismumhiding4 · 07/07/2022 15:21

So you would not pay attention to a vegetarian or a Muslim as you consider these preferences only?

Yup
And your point is?

Of course you'd respect a vegetarian who doesn't eat meat, and someone whose religious beliefs mean they cannot eat certain foods. That's a given

Would I be happy with a parent saying well s/he will only eat unprocessed ie expensive meat as it's my preferences as a parent, I'd be thinking "oh no !"

I don't use processed meats much when I'm cooking but for a play date for tea for 4 or more children over and above my own 3 DCs, it's pizzas or spag Bol or picnic type tea. Because ain't nobody going to be home in time from work to cook 2 roast chickens for all the children and your own family! Sheesh way to make a play date tea untenable!

That's a completely illogical answer. Spag bol or pizza or a picnic tea would all be fine to give a child who doesn't eat processed meat.
And being vegetarian is just a preference too. Not eating processed meat is much easier as you can still give things like spag bol.

You need to check how Quorn is made. Because you’re just spouting nonsense. Also, it isn’t ‘highly allergenic’.

Itis highly prossesssed, no idea why anyone would eat it
As for allergy
*Mycoprotein may be causing numerous and sometimes life-threatening allergic and gastrointestinal reactions. The acceptance in the food supply of this nonessential ingredient deserves reconsideration.

@SnackSizeRaisin
I don't that was an illogical PP at all

I can see exactly what poster was saying and that some other PPs suggesting (busy) parents can avoid processed meats by cooking a roast chicken or serving boiled eggs and hummus etc are being ridiculous

Part of the fun of having a play date with multiple friends over is that'll it'll be pizza and chips or something simple like that. Unless the child is a vegetarian or allergy or actual intolerance or absolute dislike to certain foods (or SEN taste/ texture reasons) it's very entitled to start demanding that Julian junior can only eat .. (then give a restricted list)!! based on parental preferences. I wouldn't have time nor energy for that - we just wouldn't invite that particular child of awkward parents again. We know when it's a genuine reason as people explain usually.

AquaVite · 12/07/2022 18:50

Just read this and thought of this thread. With its usual longterm, visionary intellect, our own government couldn't care less if we all gorge ourselves senseless on nitrates, so personal choice, obv.
